The invention relates to improvements made to ferritic alloy steels intended for use at high temperatures.
It is an object of the invention to provide a ferric alloy steel having improved creep or creep resistance at temperatures up to 700 C.
British Patent No. 658,115 (hereinafter referred to as the prior patent) discloses a forgeable ferritic alloy steel having a composition characterized by the absence of nickel above an amount of 1.5% and by the presence, as essential constituents, of 0.05-0.5% carbon, 4-20% chromium, 0.5-3% molybdenum, and or tungsten, 0.2-2.5% niobium, 0 , 05-0.25% nitrogen, 0.003-0.5% boron and 0.1-2% vanadium.
The alloy can also contain silicon up to 3%, manganese up to 4% and cobalt up to 10%.
The preferred proportions of the various constituents, as described in the prior patent, are:
EMI1.1
<tb> Carbon <SEP> 0.10 <SEP> to <SEP> 0.25 <SEP>% <SEP>
<tb>
<tb> Silicon <SEP> 0.5 <SEP> to <SEP> 1.5 <SEP>% <SEP>

It has now been found that with some modification in the composition described in the prior patent, a substantially higher tensile strength at 650 ° C. could be obtained. It should be noted that in the previous position the maximum range of the tungsten content was 0.5 to 3%.
In accordance with the main modification of the present invention, a greater amount of tungsten is incorporated with the new range being above 3% and going up to 16%.
The alloys of the present invention comprise as essential components: 0.03 to 0.30%. carbon, 4% to 20% chromium, more than

3% and up to 16% tungsten, 0.1 to 2% vanadium, and 0.05 to 2.5% niobium interchangeable in whole or in part with tantalum. The alloys may also contain up to 2% silicon, up to 4% manganese, up to 1.5% nickel, up to 0.25% nitrogen, up to 0.5% boron and up to 20% nitrogen. cobalt.
The preferred proportions of the various components are as follows;

In the above alloys up to 3% molybdenum can be added, in which case it replaces a corresponding proportion of the remainder of iron.
After an appropriate heat treatment, typical alloys (identified: ABC Alloys respectively) within the scope of the invention possess (compared with the alloys of the prior patent) the following properties, expressed as stress for tensile strength during 100 hours at 650 C.
Prior patent 2 Alloy A Alloy B 2 -Alloy C 25.20 -25.98 kg / mm- 31.50 kg / mm2 39.375kg / mm 44.10 approximately kg / mm
A.B.C. contain 4%, 6% and 8% tungsten, respectively, and it will be noted that for the particular alloys in question the breaking strength is approximately a function of the tungsten content.
As is known, the creep or creep resistance of an alloy steel depends to some extent on the heat treatment to which it has been subjected. The term "suitable heat treatment" as used above is intended to indicate that the temperature, rate of heating and cooling, and duration of the treatment are such that optimum properties are developed for the particular composition. considered. An example of a heat treatment suitable in some cases is quenching in air or oil starting at about 1160 C followed by tempering treatment at 675 C.
