<Desc/Clms Page number 2>

<Desc/Clms Page number 4>

The present invention relates to a filter for the retention of dust with a large filtering surface, in a reduced volume, the invention also relates to a process for manufacturing said filters.
In order to obtain the maximum efficiency and the minimum resistance to the passage of air to be purified, it is necessary to have a very large filtering surface in as small a volume as possible. that in general, for the production of pockets in a small volume, it has already been recommended to subject the material and deformations, compress-
<Desc / Clms Page number 2>
sions and tensions, causing wrinkles and tears.
To partially remedy this, it has also already been recommended to cut very complex and consequently have a high cost price. The bags then have a triangular cross section which requires a large base in order to reduce filtration losses.
In addition, as a result of the deformation of the material during the pressure created by the current, the spacing given to the base limits the possibilities of placing a large surface under a small volume.
The acute angle at the top of the pocket also has the drawback of causing an accumulation of dust without allowing a uniform distribution over the entire filtering surface, the resistance therefore increases in proportion to the clogging.
@
The invention obviates these drawbacks by allowing rational production in series, requiring no cutting, and consequently without loss of raw material.
One of the characteristics of the invention is to allow a maximum filtering surface under a determined volume; to this end, the filter consists of two filtering bands kept wound in spirals and kept at regular spacing, one of the bands carrying a seal on one side on one of the faces, on the other side. 'other face, so that a spiral-shaped chamber is thus formed open on one side of the filter, into which the air to be purified enters, which after passing through the wall of said chamber engages in a open exhaust chamber on the other side of the filter.

The invention will be better understood with the help of the drawings in which:
Fig.1 shows schematically and in perspective the realization of a filter.
Fig. 2 schematically gives a partial section in the filter.
According to the embodiment shown, by way of example, the filter essentially comprises two bandez 1 and 2, these bands are wound apart from each other, the filtration surface being obtained by bringing on the upper edge one, on the sides of the strip 1, a seal 3, and on the upper edge of the strip 2, a seal 4.
The joints are coated with glue, using the sets of rollers 5-5 'and 6-6' so that there is thus created a time chamber 7 for filtration and a chamber for the evacuation of purified air. For the realization, the ends of the sheets are arranged in a slot 9 of a cylinder 10 which is driven around its axis by any known means, then the joints 3 and 4- respectively of one and one are placed. on the other side of one of the filter bands and along the opposite edges. It is then sufficient to put the cylinder 10 in rotation to ensure the production of the filter up to the desired diameter.
After that, the bands 1, 2 as well as the joints 3, 4 are cut and the operation can be repeated.
As the bands and gaskets are unwound from coils, a certain pressure may be produced which may crush the filter; for this purpose, ribbons 11 and 12 are provided, of the same thickness as the joints and which come to rest on the unfilled edges
<Desc / Clms Page number 4>
tapes. Thus, the bands are kept well parallel, the bands 11, 12 being removed as soon as the filter is finished.
It is understood that it is possible to wrap around the filter a sheet of cardboard, plastic or the like, to give it real mechanical resistance.
Likewise, after removal of the cylinder 10, the axial hole of the filter can be closed by plugs 13 ,. this stopper optionally comprising stiffeners which are glued to the bands as well as to the outer casing.
It goes without saying that the filter can be made using a single strip of paper and with a single gasket, but in this case the gasket will have to pass alternately from one edge to the other to form alternately filtering and evacuation of filtered air.
The present invention has been described and illustrated purely as an indication and in no way limiting, and it goes without saying that numerous modifications can be made to its details without departing from its spirit.
