<Desc/Clms Page number 1>
<Desc/Clms Page number 2>
<Desc/Clms Page number 3>
<Desc/Clms Page number 4>
<Desc/Clms Page number 5>
<Desc/Clms Page number 6>
<Desc/Clms Page number 7>
<Desc/Clms Page number 8>
<Desc/Clms Page number 9>

The invention relates to a process for manufacturing a pre-metal or steel from phosphorous primary iron, in stationary refining vessels or furnaces of any type.
<Desc / Clms Page number 2>
It consists of a process by means of which it is possible to ensure dephosphorization, in particular from relatively high initial phosphorus contents and of the order of magnitude of approximately 2%, and up to very low final phosphorus contents or of a desired value, appreciably even before the decarburization period or during this period, and to obtain by this means a great independence of the dephosphorization with respect to the carbon content of the steel or elaborate pre-metal. the principle of the new process is also applicable, in particular, both for the preliminary refining of cast iron to be subsequently treated in the Martin furnace, and during the completion of the entire refining operation in the Martin furnace itself. the.
practical testing of the numerous methods already proposed and published for the same purpose has shown that slagging of phosphorus cannot be obtained before the end of carbon combustion, in refining vessels operating by blowing of carbon. the gaseous refining agent through the bottom, that in the exceptional case of a very low phosphorus iron (cast iron for steel) .- that is to say phosphorus contents of the order of magnitude of 0.20% and less - and still that if one uses at the same time fluxes such as fluorspar and as a blowing agent a mixture formed of a wind enriched in oxygen, or of oxygen and steam of 'water.
This is explained by the fact that, under such conditions, liquid calcareous slag rich in FeO is formed only at a relatively late stage in the process, whereas previously the sufficient enrichment of the slag in FeO was prevented by the combustion of carbon. Knowledge of this fact has led to the development of top blowing processes in which the gaseous refining agent acts on the bath from above.
<Desc / Clms Page number 3>
One of these known methods consists in blowing the bath with oxygen of industrial purity under high pressure and at such a high speed, namely a supersonic speed, that the oxygen enters the cast iron bath. crossing the scary layer, sort of like a solid. However, this process also makes it possible, as experience shows, to obtain slagging of the phosphorus before the end of the combustion of the carbon only for very low phosphorus contents in the cast iron.
Even when refining cast iron with higher phosphorus contents, it has heretofore not been possible to obtain satisfactory results with the above-described top-blowing process.
It has already been proposed, on the other hand, when pure oxygen is blown from above, and to avoid overoxidation, to blow the jet of oxygen on the surface of the bath with a relatively low kinetic energy, of such so that it penetrates relatively little in the bath. This process is only suitable for relatively low phosphorus contents.
A particular drawback of all known processes for refining cast iron grades relatively rich in phosphorus, consists in the poor certainty of obtaining low phosphorus contents before the end of the decarburization period, and in the very long duration of the decarburization. blowing which is necessary for sufficient phosphorus removal.
On the other hand, it is not possible, with any of the known top blowing methods, to avoid the formation of brown iron smoke, with the resulting drawbacks and the need to build expensive installations for the blowing. make it harmless.
This is the consequence of the principle, common to all the above-described top blowing processes and their variants,
<Desc / Clms Page number 4>
principle which consists in allowing oxygen to enter, either in the pure form or in mixture with other gases, in direct reaction with the cast iron in the state of fusion, because the oxygen jet penetrates deeply into the bath. The direct refining effect of the cast iron bath leads to strong gasification of the cast iron at the contact surface between the oxygen jet and the metal bath (called the hearth) and to intense combustion of the iron. in this place.
In another known process which also operates with blowing of the refining agent onto the surface of the bath and which uses oxygen as a refining agent or, where appropriate, mixtures of oxygen and vapor of oxygen. water, a rotating vessel is used as the refining vessel. In this process, it is desired to avoid the formation of brown iron smoke, but as a result of operation in a rotating vessel there is a constant and imperative displacement of the relatively light slag layer relative to the cast iron bath. which is heavier and, therefore, on 1% cast iron bath a direct and unavoidable action of the blowing agent which obviously favors the formation of iron smoke even when the blowing of the refining agent does not is not done vertically on the surface of the bath,
not to mention the difficulties which are already inherent in the use of a rotary refining vessel.
The present invention solves the problem defined above of an advanced dephosphorization, starting from any initial value situated among the values which are encountered in practice, and up to a determined final value which is desired. obtain, essentially before and during the decarburization period, and therefore very independently of the decarburization, in a fixed refining vessel, adopting a fundamentally new route, without increasing the duration total blowing and reliably preventing the formation of brown exhaust gases.
The necessary conditions for this are obtained by
<Desc / Clms Page number 5>
a fundamentally new procedure which consists in first forming, for a time corresponding to 15 to 25% of the total duration of the refining operation, and directly on the surface of the cast iron bath which is in the vessel fixed, almost exclusively iron protoxide in the quantity necessary for the fluidification of the lime necessary in the case considered, and, consequently, of a corresponding quantity of liquid slag, and to then continue to operate in such a way that the iron protoxide and the iron sesquioxide cause, by diffusion at the boundary surface between the bath and the slag,
continuous slagging of phosphorus and other accompanying elements, iron sesquioxide which is reduced by diffusion being constantly replaced by newly formed quantities of this oxide. This process, which can be called a process of diffusion and reaction of the slag, therefore operates, basically, as regards the progress of the oxidation operation, in a similar way to the Martin process, but with this fundamental difference that, in the normal operation of the Martin furnace, * the oxidation of the slag takes place, on an entirely different principle, by the gases of the flame, and in the new process by pure oxygen .
The above-described course of the refining operation is obtained, in the process of the present invention, and by difference with all the known top-blowing processes, in the fact that after formation of a calcareous slag containing an iron oxide, the blowing agent, preferably consisting of practically pure oxygen, is blown onto or into the slag layer covering the cast iron bath which is in the vessel fixed, under conditions such that it does not pierce the slag layer to the metal surface of the bath or come into contact with this surface, which results in its action, i.e. - ie the oxidation operation, is accomplished through Fe2O3 primarily in the slag.
<Desc / Clms Page number 6>
After formation of the slag, no more brown smoke can be formed, because the oxygen jet no longer comes into direct contact with the cast iron bath, and the interposed slag layer prevents gasification of the iron. On the other hand, as it is an indirect oxidation by the intermediary of the oxygen of the slag, the degree of purity of the oxygen no longer plays the essential role from the point of view of the content. nitrogen in the steel to be produced, which is a difference from other top blowing processes. In addition, considerable and desirable overheating of the slag occurs.
According to another characteristic of the new refining process, the formation of brown smoke can be avoided also during the first blowing period serving for the formation of the slag, if, during this interval, steam is added. water overheated in the blowing wind. The result of this procedure is based on the fact that the heat of decomposition of the water vapor determines in this phase a cooling of the hearth and, therefore, practically prevents combustion.
Due to the then almost complete elimination of the formation of iron smoke, it is also no longer necessary to construct expensive exhaust gas purification plants.
The addition of superheated steam to the blowing wind in this first phase and the resulting cooling further promotes the formation of FeO, while the decarburization is at the same time stopped. The fact that, in the case of the addition of steam, there occurs in the first minutes of blowing a certain loss of cooling iron scrap is not significant in comparison with the the aforementioned advantage, because the duration of the blowing with the addition of water vapor is at most 25% of the total blowing time, and that during the remainder of the blowing time it is possible to blow with pure oxygen.
<Desc / Clms Page number 7>
What is essential for obtaining the favorable effect of the new process, since this effect is based on diffusion phenomena, is that the height of the cast iron bath in the container is relatively low. It should not exceed a maximum of 40 cm.
Otherwise, the course of the reaction is less favorable and there is a risk of metal projection phenomena out of the container.
The use, necessary in the known processes, of gaseous cooling agents or of such solid oxidized agents is no longer necessary in itself with the new process. It is therefore possible to ensure compensation, which may be necessary, of the heat balance simply by ... ¯ of the scrap, without harming the dephosphorization sought before the combustion of the carbon is terminated.
The lime is added at the start depending on the initial phosphorus content and, when necessary, successively in portions during in any case the first 8 to 10 minutes of the blowing operation. No additional fluxes, such as fluorspar, are needed.
Extensive dephosphorization provides, in the case of a high phosphorus melting, a high phosphoric acid content slag of corresponding high value as a fertilizer.
By withdrawing the slag if desired, carried out once or twice, it is possible, when desired, to collect slag having particularly high contents of phosphoric acid.
As the height of the slag layer above the cast iron bath may be different depending on the amount of slag, which in turn results from the phosphorus content of the cast iron, the blowing pressure must be changed. and the distance of the lance from the bath depending on the various circumstances, while giving a judicious shape to the nozzle.
To obtain the "indirect" refining effect which constitutes the
<Desc / Clms Page number 8>
characteristic of the new process, this must be done, as has been observed, so that the diffuse jet of oxygen sweeps a considerable part of the surface of the slag, at least 10% of this surface, and preferably more.
The diffuse arrival of the jet of oxygen under the conditions to be observed according to the invention can be obtained in the most advantageous manner by the use of blowing nozzles arranged at such a distance from the bath that the curve of the pressure d The impact of the blowing agent depending on the section of the bath is very little curved and almost straight in its entire middle region.
The pressure is calculated at the lance so that an upper limit is set to the impact pressure of the diffuse jet on the bath or the slag, this limit being determined by the rule according to which the slag layer formed in the first phase of the process must not be perforated.
Of course, it is possible, depending on the size of the furnace or of the refining vessel, to use both a single lance and several lances, for example several lances distributed at a rate of a certain number arranged in a circle around it. a central lance, to meet the conditions imposed on the maximum impact pressure of the blowing agent and the prohibition of perforation of the slag layer by this agent.
If we use the new process, as well. Can also be carried out within the limits of the present invention, such as a one-phase process for the production of steel from the cast iron in the Martin furnace, one introduces in the same way as what has been introduced. described above in principle, through the vault of the furnace and inside the latter, the lance or several lances distributed in an appropriate manner and kept at an appropriate distance from the surface of the bath, a distance that one chooses according to the given conditions.

In the single figure of the appended drawing, there is shown, schematically, by removing all the details which are not necessary for understanding the invention, the mode of implementation of the new method, in order to make it stand out even more. better. In this drawing, which only schematically shows in section any refining vessel which is fixed, one sees, in particular, the height of the bath which is relatively low, in particular in relation to the thickness of the layer. of slag, the internal volume of the refining vessel above the bath, a volume which is very large in comparison with that occupied by the bath and the slag, as well as the arrival, in a sort of fan shape, of the jet of the blowing wind on the slag surface for a distance of the lance from the surface.
of the slag which is greater than the total height of the bath and the slag layer, and, on the other hand, the impact pressure, indicated by tight horizontal hatching, of the blowing agent in the different areas of the bath surface.
Exemplary embodiments of the new process, which are based on figures determined in a test refining vessel, will be described below. The distances of the nozzles and the pressures indicated therefore correspond to the values which result in the case of this example from the fundamental rule of the process and which change, of course, in a corresponding way with larger refining vessels.
Example 1
This example relates to the production of a pre-metal from cast iron with a high phosphorus content.
The load consisted of two tonnes of cast iron corresponding to the following analysis:
3.45% C
0.33% Si 0.63% Mn 1.76% P 0.0075% N
<Desc / Clms Page number 10>
At the start of melting, 40 kg was added. of lime and 25 kg. of ore per tonne of cast iron, and after eight minutes of blowing 8 kg. of lime and 25 kg. of ore per tonne of cast iron. High oxygen content was blown. From the start to the end of the melting, we blown with a lance distance of 900 mm. and an oxygen pressure at the nozzle of two effective atmospheres, which corresponded to an oxygen impact pressure on the bath of 0.02 kg / cm 2.
After 20.5 minutes, we were in the presence of a pre-metal responding to the following analysis:
1.90% 0 0.010% P 0.002% N
0.0% Si
0.12% Mn and the bath temperature was 15000 c.
Example 2
This example also relates to the production of a pre-metal from very phosphorous cast iron.
The load consisted of 2 tonnes of cast iron responding to the following analysis:
3.65% 0
0.41% Si
0.65% Mn 1.98% P
0.0075% N.
At the start of melting, 60 kg was added. of lime per tonne of cast iron, and after 9 minutes of blowing another 60 kg. of lime and 80 kg. of scrap per tonne of cast iron. From the start to the end of the blowing operation, high content oxygen was blown. The distance from the lance was 900 mm., And the pressure of the oxygen at the nozzle of two effective atmospheres, which corresponds to
<Desc / Clms Page number 11>
also had an impact pressure of oxygen on the bath of 0.02 kg / cm2.
After 16 minutes of blowing, a pre-metal was withdrawn containing: 1.5% C 0.045% P 0.005% N
0.0% Si 0.14% Mn the temperature of the bath being.:. Of 15,500 C.
Example 3 This example relates to the production of a mild steel which is not calmed. the load was 2 tonnes of cast iron responding to the following analysis:
3.45% C
0.33% Si
0.63% Mn
1.76% P
0.063% S
0.0075% N
At the start of melting, 50 kg was added. of lime per ton of.-cast iron, and after 9 minutes of blowing another 90 kg. of lime and 25 kg. of ore per tonne of cast iron. After 13 minutes of blowing, a new addition was made, consisting of 50 kg. of ore per tonne of cast iron.
During this melting, high content oxygen was blown. the purity of oxygen was 97.8%. The operation was carried out with an oxygen pressure of two effective atmospheres measured at the nozzle and with a distance from the nozzle of 900 mm., Which remained constant throughout the blowing operation, which corresponded to a pressure. also impact 0.02 kg / cm2 for oxygen on the bath.
<Desc / Clms Page number 12>
By blowing for 26 minutes, it was possible to produce without changing the slag a steel meeting the following analysis:
0.04% C 0.022% P 0.004% N
0.0% Si 0.04. % Mn 0.011% S the bath temperature was 1700 C.
After deoxidation, the manganese content was increased to 0.28%.
In none of the test series reproduced in the examples was the appearance of brown smoke observed, except during the first 3 to 4 minutes, that is to say over time during the- which first takes place the formation of the slag, and, as has been explained above, this formation can be prevented even in this phase by adding water vapor to the sulfurizing agent flage.
The application of the new process is not limited to the de-phosphorization of high phosphorous pig iron; on the contrary, it is advantageous even when the cast iron from which we start has low phosphorus contents. On the other hand, the principle of the new process is also observed when the oxygen or the oxygenated refining gas is made to act on the slag, not by vertical blowing from above, but by blowing following a another direction, but only acting on this slag without entering the metal bath.
