<Desc/Clms Page number 2>
<Desc/Clms Page number 3>
<Desc/Clms Page number 4>
<Desc/Clms Page number 5>

The present invention relates to a process for extracting, in a gas-tight manner, ash in pieces or in coarse grains from a reaction chamber operating under an overpressure and serving for the gasification of pulverulent fuels, preferably in suspension with oxygen and water vapor. The invention further relates to a device for implementing this method.
It is known to gasify pulverulent fuels with oxygen and water vapor. Recently a
<Desc / Clms Page number 2>
gasification process for pulverulent fuels has grown significantly, said process consisting in blowing the pulverulent fuel, in a homogeneous mixture with oxygen and, where appropriate, with water vapor, into a reaction chamber located at high temperature , so that the reaction between the solid carbon and the gasifying agents takes place in suspension, that is to say with a flow in the same direction of the carbon and the gasifying agents. The residue from the gasification is in this case mostly in finely divided form and is extracted from the reaction chamber with the useful gas.
However, part of the gasification residues are deposited in the form of liquid slag which then flows through a draw-off opening of the reaction chamber and solidifies on contact with the cooled surfaces of the walls or by falling into liquid. water, and finally leaves the reaction chamber in a more or less granular form.
As long as there is not an excess pressure in the gasification chamber which is too different from the normal pressure, the extraction of the ash in coarse grains or in pieces does not present any difficulties. It is simply removed with the aid of scrapers from a plunger cup into which it has entered from the reaction chamber. However, when gasification is to take place under high pressure, for example at a pressure of 20 atmospheres and above, the realization the sealing of the slag withdrawal device, which connects to the reaction chamber, can no longer be carried out in the form of a dip cup.
In this case, the removal of the lumpy ash from the reaction chamber subjected to high pressure must take place by another route, for which the present invention makes.
<Desc / Clms Page number 3>
an advantageous proposition. In this case, the invention makes use of a method known in the art for passing a pulverulent material from a high pressure vessel into a lower pressure vessel.
This known process consists in conveying the pulverulent material by a tubular channel between the two enclosures situated at a different pressure, the tubular channel being produced in such a way that the conveying device, which sends the dust under pressure into the channel, for example. a piston driven by a reciprocating movement, causes the formation of a plug, consisting of pulverulent material, which then serves as the actual sealing element between the two enclosures subjected to a. different pressure.
By suitably shaping the channel extending between the enclosures, it is possible to make the dust plug substantially sealed, so that significant pressure differences can still be maintained between the two enclosures, even when the dust plug should remain stationary for some time without further amounts of dust being pressed into the channel by the transport piston.
The advantage of this known device lies in the fact that the degree of sealing produced between the two enclosures is independent of wear of the channel.
This known sealing method is, however, not suitable for coarse-grained material or even for lumpy material. Even in the case of very high pressures, it is not possible, from such a material, to produce a stopper having a sufficient seal for the indicated purpose.
The present invention now consists in mixing the lumpy ash with a fine-grained substance.
<Desc / Clms Page number 4>
or with a pulverulent substance, below the operating pressure of the gasification plant, 'and to send the mixture, with formation of a gas-tight plug, through a pipe into a sieve device subjected to the normal pressure, in which the lumpy fractions are separated from the powdery fractions, the latter then being, at least partially, again used to be mixed with further amounts of lumpy ash.
The additional fine-grained substance which fills the voids between the coarse-grained ash fractions, in conjunction with them, causes a gas-tight plug which, when the proportions of the mixture and the mixture are correctly chosen. pressing pressures, exhibits the desired gas tightness. As an additional fine-grained substance, any substance which has sufficient strength at the temperatures used. For example, finely ground sand or the like can be used, or also powdery gasification residues which have either been separated from the useful gas or have formed from the ash in coarse pieces by. after compression inside the transfer tube.
Although the foregoing explanations relate primarily to a gasification process in which the pulverulent fuel is gasified under pressure and in suspension, they are also applicable also to other gasification processes in which at least gasification residues are formed. partially in the form of lumpy ash or coarse-grained ash.
A device for implementing the method according to the invention is shown in a simplified manner.

on the accompanying drawing. The gasification under pressure takes place in the gasification chamber 1, of which only the lower part of the refractory masonry 2 is shown and the extraction opening 3 for the coarse lump gasification residues. The coarse-grained ash accumulates in an ashtray 4 and passes through line 'into a mixing device 6. In this mixing device 6, furthermore, through line 7, a fine-grained substance, for example sand sand, arrives. fine-grained or fine-grained ash, which comes from a feed pipe ±! in the channel where it is compressed using the piston, forming a plug.
The resistance in channel 1 is caused by a certain narrowing of this channel in the mixing device 6 which, owing to the relatively high temperature of the coarse-grained ash, is provided, if necessary, with In a casing 11 cooled with water, the fine-grained fractions and the coarse-grained fractions are carefully mixed together and they then pass through the tube 12.
in the conveyor device 13 working in substantially the same way as the compression device which introduces the fine grain material into the mixing device 6 The conveyor device 13 consists of a tube 14 and a piston 15 which moves in this tube following a reciprocating movement and which is actuated by means of a linkage 16 from a drive device, not shown. The stopper obtained from the mixture of the fine grain material and lumpy ash passes through tube 17 into a sieve device 18 in which the fine material is separated from the coarse-lumped fractions. The fine-grained material is collected in the hopper 19 and passes through the tube

20,
in the bottom container 21 of an elevator which conveys this material, through line 22, into the distributor tube 8 The coarse-grained fractions are withdrawn through the draw-off opening 23 and then fall into a sedan 24 .
In the embodiment of the invention which has just been described, the ash in pieces reaches, as it forms in the gasifier, from the ashtray 4 into the mixing device 6, passing through the pipe. 5 It is however possible to interpose on the path between the ashtray 4 and the mixing device 6 a pre-crushing device which also operates in a pressure-tight manner and which subjects the ash to prior crushing. presenting with a very variable grain size, in order to bring it to the desired grain size.
In addition, it is possible to provide, between such a prior crushing device and the mixing device 6, for example following the pipe 5, a particular distribution device ensuring filling in doses, in the mixing device, pre-crushed ash, when it turns out to be more advantageous to carry out a discontinuous extraction of the ash in order to adapt this extraction to the operation of the gasification or to the formation, possibly variable, of ash in pieces.
