<Desc/Clms Page number 2>

The present invention relates to compositions containing synthetic polymers formed by the reaction of polymeric materials having active hydrogen atoms and diisocyanates. More particularly, it relates to compositions containing synthetic polymers formed from diisocyanates, polyesters, polyesteramides and polyalkylene ether glycols. More particularly still, the invention relates to compositions containing such synthetic polymers which have better properties both in the unvulcanized state and in the vulcanized state.
<Desc / Clms Page number 2>
The preparation of non-valcanized synthetic polymers from polyesters or polyestermamides and disocyanates is described in Belgian patents Nos. 506.014 and 506.015.
As disclosed in these patents, these unvulcanized synthetic polymers are prepared from polyesters or polyetheramides of specified molecular weight and chemical composition with indicated amounts of designated diisocyantates. Similar synthetic polymers can be made by reacting diisocyanates with polyalkylem ether glycols.
Unvulcanized synthetic polymers are similar in physical properties to unvulcanized natural rubber and as such are mixed after their preparation with compositional ingredients and a vulcanizing agent which is usually a polyisocyanate, a mixture of polyisocyanates or , preferably, a diisocyanate,
Generally, the object of the present invention is to improve the properties of unvulcanized composite materials and vulcanized materials produced therefrom. A more particular object is to provide materials composed, but not vulcanized, from these polymers, which age for prolonged periods without premature vulcanization.
Another object is to soften or reduce the plasticity of the composite material. Another object is to improve the abrasion resistance of vulcanized synthetic polymers. Another object is to achieve the above objects without substantially reducing the other physical properties of the polymers and without increasing the time required to accomplish the vulcanization of the composite material at elevated temperatures.
Other objects will become apparent from the description.
The objects of the present invention are achieved by forming a mixture of 100 parts by weight of a polymeric material.

It is seen from the results of Table II that the compounds containing relatively small amounts of natural rubber have higher tensile strengths than the control composition without natural rubber.
To determine the effect of the use of natural rubber on the room temperature aging of the prepared compositions, the plastic flow data on the unvulcanized samples of each example was determined at specified intervals after the compositions were prepared.

It is evident from the results of Table III that the examples containing natural rubber partially harden or vulcanize to a lesser extent than the compositions of Example 1 which do not contain natural rubber.
since compositions containing natural rubber extrudate more easily after 96 hours of aging at room temperature.
The abrasion resistance of the composition of each example is determined on a sample vulcanized for 15 minutes at 280 F (138 C). The tests are carried out by the method ASTM D394-47, Method B and the values given in Table IV are to be compared with a. standard value of 100 for a natural rubber composition.

The polymer used in Examples 10,! 1, 12 and 13, is prepared from approximately equal molecular amounts of 3,3'-dimethyl-4,4'-diphenyl-diisocyanate and a polyester prepared from adipic acid, 80 mole% ethylene glycol and 20 mole% propylene glycol. Polyester has a hydroxyl number of 56.1 and an acid number of 1.5. The diisocyanate used for the vulcanization of the polymer is
EMI8.2
33-dimethyl -.- diphenyl-diisocyanate.
The butadiene / styrene copolymer used in Example 12 is prepared from 72% butadiene and 28% styrene, approximately.
The abrasion resistance results reported in
<Desc / Clms Page number 9>
the tables-; V and VI show that the use of natural rubber, reclaimed rubber and copolymers of butadiene and styrene, in admixture with the disisocyanate-modified polymer, results in vulcanized materials with improved abrasion resistance.
The tensile strength and elongation results of the blended materials indicate, in most cases, substantial equality with improvement over these same properties of the diisocyanate-modified polymer itself. that by using small amounts of natural rubber, regenerated natural rubber, or copolymer of butadiene and syrene with polymers modified by di-isocyanates, mixtures are obtained which are generally softer and which generally have less tendency. to harden with aging.
It will therefore be appreciated that by the practice of the invention it is possible to obtain vulcanized materials which all have improved abrasion resistance, and which for the most part have aging and durable qualities. improved tensile strength.
Although certain embodiments and representative details have been described to illustrate the invention, it will be apparent to those skilled in the art that numerous variations and modifications can be made thereto without departing from the scope of the invention.
