<Desc/Clms Page number 2>

The present invention relates to a mirror, for example a toilet mirror provided with lighting.
Mirrors provided with lighting devices most often attached to the side, outside the mirror, are known. Fluorescent or incandescent tubular lamps are preferably used, often housed in frosted glass cylinders. to preserve glare.
Such mirrors take up relatively a lot of space, which is particularly unpleasant when they are intended for rooms of small dimensions.
According to the invention the light source is arranged behind the surface of the mirror and this in such a way that a part of the light illuminates, through a part of the surface of the mirror, the person in front. this while the rest of the light is used to illuminate indirectly, from the rear of the mirror, the room in which the mirror is located. This part of the mirror surface, which can be either hollowed out or not -tinned will be designated in the following description "lighting surface".
The light coming out freely into the space from the rear of the mirror provides indirect lighting with a very pleasant effect.
Several embodiments, given by way of non-limiting example, of the mirror according to the invention have been shown in the accompanying drawing. In all the figures, the reflecting surface is designated by 1, that is to say. ie the mirror surface and; by 2, with the exception of fig. 5 the light sources.
In this drawing, figs. 1a, 2a, 3, 4a and 5a show the front surface of the mirror, that is to say the side facing the person looking at it, while figs. 1b, 2b and 5b illustrate a view side and figs 1c, 2c, 4c and 5c show the rear face of the mirror.
In the embodiment according to figs. 1a, 1b and 1c there is provided at the upper edge of mirror 1 a non-tinned but frosted surface 3, behind which an incandescent or fluorescent lamp functions as a light source 2.
In the embodiment according to Figs. 2a, 2b and 2c, there is provided in the mirror a recess °, in front of which is placed a device 5 which preserves glare and consists for example of a frosted glass plate or by a perforated metal plate.Instead of a recess 4 in the glass, a translucent surface could also be obtained by omitting to tin a corresponding part of the mirror.
In the example according to fig. 3 the illumination surface is provided in the lower part of the mirror. In order to give a more direct illumination than is the case when using a fully frosted surface, the frosted parts can be shaped longitudinal slats as illustrated at 6 in FIG. 3 or transverse as illustrated at 7 on the right in this same figure.
In the example illustrated in FIGS. 4a and 4c, two winding surfaces 10 are arranged respectively to the left and to the right of the mirror, a light source 2 being associated with each of these lighting surfaces.
Of course, it is also possible to provide three or a greater number of lighting surfaces and / or light sources.
In the embodiment illustrated by the pins 5a toc the lighting surface, designated by 12, has the shape of a ring. Preferably in this example, use will be made of a light source 2 of circular shape as well.
<Desc / Clms Page number 2>
Of course, the illumination surface can have any other shape than those shown and may be arranged at any location in the mirror. Likewise, the light source which is located behind the illumination surface or surfaces may have any suitable shape.
It is also possible to use instead of a single light source behind the lighting surface a series of light bulbs.
CLAIMS.
1.Mirror provided with lighting, characterized in that it comprises a light source arranged behind the surface of the mirror so that part of the light illuminates, through an unsupported or recessed part of the mirror, a person in front of it, while the rest of the light is used to indirectly illuminate the room in which the mirror is located from the rear of the mirror.
