<Desc/Clms Page number 2>
<Desc/Clms Page number 3>
variante.
<Desc/Clms Page number 4>

The present invention relates to a seal for bottles having a screw cap, this seal being made of flexible material, preferably of synthetic plastic, such as polyamides, polyethylene, etc.
For a series of bottles there are a large number of screw caps of different diameters, these differences resulted not only from differences in the diameter of the necks of the bottles, but also from certain manufacturing tolerances. It follows that if it is desired to have gaskets which hold firmly in the bottom of the caps, it is necessary to have a very large number of gaskets of slightly different diameters, which considerably increases the cost of the gasket. 'tools and consequently the cost price of the seals. The present invention @ aims to remedy this drawback.
For this purpose, on the perimeter of the
<Desc / Clms Page number 2>
joint according to the invention, a zone of low flexural strength is provided, in order to be able to use the joint for plugs of different internal diameters, by possible folding and / or crushing of said projections.
In a particular embodiment of the object of the invention, said zone is formed by small discontinuous projections,
In another advantageous embodiment, said zone is formed by a circular ring of thickness less than that of the rest of the washer.
Another object of the invention is to create a certain flexibility when screwing the cap, which makes the operation more pleasant and less dangerous, possibly avoiding the breakage of the cap if the seal is tightened a little too sharply. To this end, on the upper face of the seal, that is to say on the face intended to come into contact with the internal end face of the stopper, at least one annular projection, preferably continuous, is provided.
In a particular embodiment, in the. case where this seal is in the general form of a disc, it is provided, on its lower face, that is to say on that which is intended to come into contact with the upper face of the neck, with minus one continuous annular protrusion.
Other details and features of the invention will emerge from the description of the drawings appended hereto and which represent, by way of non-limiting examples, two embodiments of the object of the invention.
Figure 1 is an elevational view and partially in section of a seal according to the invention, mounted in a bottle.
Figure 2 is a plan view of the seal of Figure 1.
Figure 3 is a sectional view along line III-III of Figure 2.
Figure 4 is similar to Figure 3, but relates to a

variant.
Figure 5 is a plan view of another seal according to the invention.
Figure 6 is a sectional view along the line VI-VI of Figure 5.
In the various figures, the same reference notations designate similar elements.
The seal shown in Figures 1 to 4 consists of a washer of flexible synthetic plastic material, polyethylene for example.
On the periphery 2 of this washer 1, small projections are provided
3, which here are small spikes. This makes it possible to use the washer 1 to serve as a seal in bottles whose stopper has as an internal diameter a diameter which can vary between the diameter of the washer 1, that is to say the diameter of the periphery. 2 and the diameter of this periphery increased by the dimension of two of the points. For intermediate diameters, the tips 3 fold up while crushing slightly. This is moreover clearly visible in Figure 1, where we see the washer 1 placed in the bottom of a bakelite stopper 4 screwed on the neck 5 of a bottle 6.
The small points 3 form, on the periphery of the washer 1, a zone of weak bending resistance. This zone can also be produced, as can be seen in FIGS. 5 and 6, by a crown 11, of lesser thickness. than that of the rest of the washer 1. This crown folds up when the seal is inserted into a stopper, the bottom of which has an internal diameter between the outside diameter of the crown and that of the washer.
On the upper face of the washer 1, that is to say on its face 7 which is intended to come into contact with the bottom of the stopper 4, therefore the internal end face of this stopper, a continuous annular projection is provided or discontinuous, designated by 8 and whose cross section is here triangular. When the cap 4 is screwed onto the bottle 6, it is therefore possible to slightly crush this
<Desc / Clms Page number 4>
projection 8, which gives flexibility to the closure. It should be noted that more than one projection such as 8 can be provided: this is how in FIG. 4 the seal shown has two projections 8,
On the underside of the washer 1, two continuous annular projections designated by 9 are provided, the cross section of which is once again triangular here.
These projections are intended to increase the seal. because they form here a kind of labyrinth seal. We can moreover provide more than two protrusions 9: it is thus in Figure 3, we have provided three protrusions, such as 9. We could also possibly provide only one protrusion 9, that- this crushing slightly to increase the seal. It should be noted that in general the protrusions 9 will be provided so as to come to be placed on the upper face 10 of the neck 5, as can be seen in FIG. 1. The protrusions 9 could, moreover, also be arranged at one point distance such that they are placed on either side of the bottleneck.
It should be understood that the invention is in no way limited to the embodiments described and that many modifications could be made to the latter, without departing from the scope of the present patent. Thus, the tips 3 could be applied to other types of seal than that shown.
It could in particular be applied to the hermetic closures for flasks which are the subject of the applicant's patent no.537.541 of April 21, 1955. Similarly, to other types of seals and in particular to the hermetic closures of the patent which comes from To be cited, one could also apply the annular projection 8, continuous or discontinuous. On the other hand, at the joints of Figures 2 or 5, one could not provide this projection 8 and even possibly eliminate the projections 9. It should be noted that in the case of Figure 4, the seal can be used on both sides, that is to say that it is equally possible to put the upper face or the lower face in contact with the bottom of the stopper.
