<Desc/Clms Page number 2>
<Desc/Clms Page number 3>
Suivant l'invention le dispositif est constitué par un . récipient allongé disposé verticalement et, de préférence, de forme cylindrique ;
<Desc/Clms Page number 4>
<Desc/Clms Page number 5>

Numerous proposals are known aimed at transforming cast iron into steel by blowing gaseous refining means on or into the direct current of cast iron. Most of these proposals present a common point of view, namely that the melt stream should be arranged in a horizontal or slightly inclined position. In order to be able to control with precision the reactions occurring successively, or better, one next to the other, it has often been proposed to provide reaction compartments, consisting of
<Desc / Clms Page number 2>
by recesses in the form of a chimney and which can be loaded with slags of different composition. In addition, it has been proposed to charge the reaction slag so that it flows in the direction opposite to that of the melt flow.
In carrying out such a process, the device provides an almost horizontal flow, progressing in opposite directions to one another from the streams of pig iron and slag. As a result, the slag, which is particularly suitable for the reaction, must come into contact with and act on the metal which has already been highly refined previously.
Next, it has been proposed to refine a free flowing cast iron stream in steel by means of the side blowing with oxygen-containing refining gases, optionally by introducing parts into the gas stream. constituents of the slag in powder form. Such a device must serve to remove the slag which forms directly with the iron and this slag can optionally continue to react subsequently with the metal, previously refined to the point of reaction, in any container.
All these proposals include and deal with a great difficulty, to be enjoyed; to provide the conditions necessary for the reaction between iron and slag with regard to the duration of the reaction and the contact between the metal and the slag.
According to a process which does not form part of the state of the art, it is proved that during any wind refining, all the refining reactions and not only, for example, the decarburization and the dephosphorization, but simultaneously the slagging of silica and manganese, can take place simultaneously and completely, if all the elements necessary for refining: oxygen, - cast iron and slag, flow together continuously in a precise dosage until the moment where the capacity of the refining vessel is reached.
Greece to the device according to the invention, this process, not yet forming part of the state of the art and which had been developed as a batch process, can be implemented
<Desc / Clms Page number 3>
now as a continuous process, with all the advantages of such a continuous process, in the specific case of refining, - from above by blowing gaseous refining means onto the surface of the bath.
This device makes it possible to bring together at the same point all the elements which must act and react together, namely oxygen, cast iron, slag and the reaction temperature, so that all the reactions take place simultaneously and that, without being hampered by the phenomena which occur at this point of reaction, the steel and excess slag are discharged continuously while almost always having the same composition and at an almost always identical temperature *
According to the invention, the device consists of a. elongate container disposed vertically and preferably cylindrical in shape;
by a supply device for the cast iron, disposed above said receptacle, by a refining gas supply; by a loading device for the additives; as well as by two openings serving for the withdrawal, respectively of the finished steel and of the slag. The opening in the bottom serving for the withdrawal of the finished steel is advantageously connected to a siphon provided with an overflow situated slightly above the level of the metal in the receptacle: In addition, the receptacle carries, preferably, a cover provided with openings for the melting, for the supply of the gaseous refining means, for the additives and for the flue gases.
One embodiment, given by way of non-limiting example, is shown in the accompanying drawing.
A receptacle 1, elongated and advantageously round, receives the cast iron jet 2 and, by means of a blowing lance 3 advantageously cooled with water, the gas jet 4 containing oxygen and serving for the 'refining, these two jets being conducted uniformly and @ permanently on the surface 5 of the bath 6 was in the repaint 1. At the same time, a known loading device 7 makes it possible to load on the surface 5, known permanently either periodically,
<Desc / Clms Page number 4>
materials 8 promoting the formation of slag or cooling means of any kind.
The finished steel flows continuously through the lowest point of the vessel 1 by means of an opening 9 so that during refining the metal level 5 always remains at the same height, despite the regular arrival of the cast.
An appropriate adjustment can be obtained, either by modifying the discharge opening or, when the discharge opening remains unchanged, by a common adjustment of the arrival of the cast iron and that of the gas stream. 'refining. However, in a particularly advantageous manner, such an adjustment is obtained by the fact that the jet, leaving the bottom of the container, is led through a siphon 10 - provided with an overflow 11 lying slightly above the level. 5 of the metal in the container, in relation to the value of the pressure exerted by the column of metal and slag in the container. Above the level of the metal a uniformly thick layer of the slag 12 is obtained because the container 1 is provided with an overflow 13 for the slag.
The device according to the invention further comprises an automatic adjustment with respect to one another of the arrivals of the pig iron 2 and of the refining means 4 containing oxygen, this adjustment being obtainable, for example. , since the oxygen-containing refining means and the pig iron are each supplied via a reservoir 14, respectively 15; the two reservoirs being weighed with respect to one another on the scale 16 so that the losses in weight of the two reservoirs are kept identical according to determined weight ratios. However, any other type of automatic or manual metering for balancing the pig iron and refining gas containing oxygen is also covered by the invention.
Above the receptacle, it is possible to provide a cover 17 serving to reduce the radiation and carrying, in addition to openings for the melt 18, for the gas refining means 19 and for the additives 20, an opening 21 for flue gases; several of these jets can also flow through a
<Desc / Clms Page number 5>
The container and the lid are given a ceramic coating, resistant to heat. Depending on the capacity of this device, it is possible to work with one or more streams of gas blowing on the surface, as well as with one or more streams of cast iron. Likewise, it is possible to provide one or more loading devices for additive materials of any type.
The refining means can be constituted by technically pure oxygen, air, CO2, H20, each of these elements being able to be used separately or else in any mixture.
When using the device according to the invention and if @ puffed with several blowing lances or with a single lance and several blowing jets, it is possible to work in a particularly advantageous manner according to a process which does not still part of the state of the art by proceeding so that one or more blowing jets blowing through the layer of slag on or in the metal bath, while the other or the other blowing jets only blow on or in the slag.
According to this process, not yet forming part of the state of the art, it is possible to adjust the carbon content within wide limits with respect to a predetermined degree of oxidation of the metal and of the slag and which can be characterized, for example, by the (p) content, or the (Un) content in the metal and the (FeO) content of the slag.
The device according to the invention combines all the advantages of simplicity from the construction point of view, and allows the implementation of such a continuous process in a technically perfect manner and, hence, safe and economical.
