<Desc/Clms Page number 2>
<Desc/Clms Page number 3>
<Desc/Clms Page number 4>

<Desc/Clms Page number 7>
<Desc/Clms Page number 8>

Engraving devices are already known comprising a photoelectric cell reader deciphering a drawing or photograph and transmitting, after amplification. the pulses of this photocell which are used to actuate an engraving device.
However, these known devices are designed to reproduce a single drawing by means of a single reading station and a single engraving device.
The object of the present invention is to remedy this drawback.
<Desc / Clms Page number 2>
It relates to an engraving process characterized in that an image to be reproduced is explored by means of a single reading station and that this image is reproduced at the same time on several receiving surfaces, which makes it possible in particular to engrave several receiving surfaces in a reduced space and time.
According to a characteristic of the intention, the different colors composing a polychrome image to be reproduced are selected in the single reading station and the part of the image corresponding to each color is reproduced separately and at the same time on the receiving surfaces.
The invention also extends to an installation for implementing the preceding methods or similar methods, characterized in that it comprises a single light source exploring the image to be reproduced, and several photoelectric cells receiving the. rays reflected by this image, each cell controlling a particular engraving device.
According to one characteristic of the invention, each photoelectric cell comprises a corrective filter selecting from a polychrome image to be reproduced, the portion which corresponds to a determined color, the engraving device controlled by this cell, then engraving a receiving surface. such as roll or stencil, corresponding to that color.
According to another characteristic of the invention, each photoelectric cell transmits the pulses that it receives to its engraving device by means of a particular amplifier to each cell which transforms these pulses into usable currents.
According to another characteristic of the invention, the pulses amplified in the amplifiers are transmitted
<Desc / Clms Page number 3>
to electromagnets which move a milling cutter capable of coming into contact with the surface to be engraved.
The invention also extends to the characteristics described below and to their various possible combinations.
An installation conforming to the invention is shown by way of example in the accompanying drawing, in which - The figure is a schematic elevational view of the installation.
- Figure 2 is a schematic view of this installation in plan.
- Figure 3 is a schematic sectional view of the engraving device.
The automatic engraving installation shown in Figures 1 to 3 oomporte the following essential elements mounted in a common frame 11 '12, 13, 14; a) A central reading station comprising a fixed cone 2 wedged on a shaft 3 journaled in the frame 13 of the machine and a cone 4 ooaxial and opposite to the previous one, keyed sliding on a shaft 5 journaled in the frame 12 of this machine.
The shafts 3 and 5 of the support cones are driven in synchronous rotation by means of pairs of helical gears 6, 7 for the shaft 3, 8, 9 for the arbor '; 5, from an intermediate shaft 10 journaling in the frame 12, 13.
This intermediate shaft is itself driven by the motor 11 comprising a speed variator and by the intermediary of a pair of helical gears 12, 13.
The drawing holder is formed by a thin sheet of steel, for example one tenth of a millimeter thick and of suitable length, rolled up on itself so as to form a cylinder 14 open at both ends on the support,
<Desc / Clms Page number 4>
elastic due to its small thickness: the drawing is rolled up and it is connected by its opposite edges along a generatrix.
The assembly thus formed is placed between the cones 2 and 4 after removal of the movable cone 4 and then the movable cone 4 is pushed back towards the fixed cone 2 and fixed in place.
The gears 6 and 6 drive, via gears 14, 15, a lead screw 16 journaled in the frame 12 ... 13.
On this lead screw is engaged by its thread a bronze nut 17 guided longitudinally and supporting an exciter lamp 18 and four photoelectric cells of appropriate selection 191 '192, 193, 194. The axes of the beam of the lamp and of the cells converge towards the same point of the drawing to be reproduced and this point describes a generatrix of this drawing when, as a result of the rotation of the lead screw 16, the nut 17 moves parallel to the axis of the support cylinder 14.
Each suitable selection photocell and possibly its correcting filter only allows rays of a single color to pass, the design can thus be broken down into four colors. b) A set of engraving devices, consisting, in the case of the example shown, by two cylinders 201, 202 arranged between the uprights 13, 14 of the frame symmetrically with respect to the lead screw 1a, and by two cylinders 203, 204 arranged in the same way between the uprights 11, 12 of this frame.
Each cylinder 201 ... 204 is mounted on a shaft 211 ... 214 which rotates freely in the frame and which is driven in rotation from the intermediate shaft 10 by a pair of gears 23-241, 23-242 , and 25-243, 25-244.

The exciter lamp 18 cooled by pulsed air current is itself connected to the amplifier 41 by means of

conductors 43.
The conductors 421 ... 424 of each engraving device supply current to the two series of electromagnet coils 331, which act on the movable armatures 341 integral with the rotating rod 3519
The installation described above works as follows:
The motor 11 rotating at constant speed, drives by the gears 13, 12 the intermediate shaft 10. The latter transmits its rotational movement on the one hand to the shafts 3 and 5 of the cones 2 and 4 bearing the image, by means of the gears 7, 6 and 9, 8 and on the other hand to the cylinders 201 ... 204 carrying the surfaces to be etched, by means of the pairs of gears 23, 241, 242 and 25; 243 '244.
The shafts 3, 5 of the cones in turn transmit their rotation to the lead screw 16 by means of the pairs of gears 6, 14 and 8, 15. @
The nut 17 integral with the central reading station and the supports 26 of the engraving devices sliding on the slides 1 are thus driven parallel to the generatrices of the corresponding cylinders in strictly identical movements.
. When the nut 17 thus moves along a generator of the cylinder 14, the exciter lamp 18 sends on the image to be explored a light ray which touches this surface at a point situated on the axis of the photocells 191 .. . 194. Each cell, due to its selotivity and its filter selects a color which produces, when the light beam meets it, a pulse transmitted, in the form of current, by the corresponding conductors 401 ... 404 to the amplifier 41 ..
The latter amplifies these impulses and transmits them
<Desc / Clms Page number 7>
in the form of alternative trains, with a frequency of 200 to
600 per second, to the corresponding engraving device.
In each engraving device the cutter 361 ... 364 is driven in continuous and very fast rotation by the motor
31 and tends to be raised with a constant force from the surface to be etched by the blade x. Each alternating pulse acts on the electromagnets 331 .. and, through the intermediary of the armatures 341, lowers the rod 351 carrying the cutter 361. The pressure of the pulses is regulated by the springs 391 ... 394 .
A plate corresponding to the color which impressed one of the photoelectric cells is thus engraved on the cylinder corresponding to this cell.
The method and the installation described above thus make it possible to achieve the following technical advantages: 1) By means of a single central reading station comprising only one light evening, it is possible to engrave either several corresponding stencils each. to one color of the image, i.e. several identical monochrome stencils.
2) The engraving of the different monochrome stencils that are identical or corresponding to the different colors of the image is performed at the same time.
3) The execution of several identical stencils or monochromatic stencils intended for the printing of a polychrome image can thus be carried out in a reduced space and in a reduced time.
4) The method according to the invention makes it possible to engrave points whose density can vary between 1 and 100 per square millimeter. These points can be offset at an appropriate angle.
5) The method according to the invention allows a grahde speed of execution. The latter is a direct function of the frequency of the current sent by the amplifier
<Desc / Clms Page number 8>
to the electromagnets 331 of the engraving devices and which can reach 600 periods. The engraving of a roll 1 meter in length and 0 m40 in development can thus be carried out in a time varying from 3 hours to 1 hour depending on this frequency.
6) The device of the invention makes it possible to eliminate, in the engraved surface, the embossed metal slopes which must be removed before printing and which affect the sharpness of the printing. The removal of these slopes further weakens the resistance of the engraved surface. The machine could nevertheless be operated without rotary drive of the engraving tools, therefore by simple percussion.
7) The stencils obtained by means of the claimed installation can be mounted one after the other on flatbed or rotary machines.
8) The claimed method and installation also allowing the engraving of plastic cylinders having a hardness between 75 to 100 dura-ty shore, as well as male and female mild steel rollers intended for embossing sheets of steel. all materials.
