<Desc/Clms Page number 4>

be raised or lowered vertically.
In addition, the invention relates to the installation on the underside of the closure panel of rails allowing a mobile lifting crane to circulate therein, suspended under these rails. The rails can be extended by using downwardly pivotable ends so that the lifting point of the crane is brought above the quay or out of the edge of the ship.

These cylinders, one of which is visible in Figures 1 and 2, are designated by the number 3. They can, if necessary, act as supports or posts or replace them. The references 4 and 4A designate the two ends which can pivot downwards with the extensions of the rails. They are pivotally mounted on the surface 1 of the closure panel thanks to the hinge 11, and they are supported by the guys 12.
References 5 and 5A designate the rails under which the suspended lifting crane can travel. The lifting crane 7 is connected, so as to orientate in the horizontal direction, to the carriage 6 which runs on the mentioned rails 5 and 5A. The crane 7 is fitted with ordinary lifting machinery (not shown below.

the cable sins) for two lifting cables iii <eepei'1dants b etceycirculant t, a speed twice the other. The reason is to be able, if it is deemed useful, to unload with a grapple.
In this case the cable 9 is passed through the pulley of the grapple, then returned to the crane and chained to the latter. The cable 9 'then acts as the closing and lifting cable for a loaded grapple, while the cable acts as the opening and transport cable for the empty picker. If there is no grapple, it is necessary to disengage the lifting drum from the cable 9, chain the cable in such a way that it does not interfere and provide the cable 8 with a usual hook 10. The platform form 1 can be assembled with hooks 13 which constitute a means of attachment when the platform is doing the lifting floor service when the hydraulic columns are in use

The closure panel is also provided with hooks 14 intended to fix the stay cables 15 thereto.
By lowering or closing the closure panel, the edge of
<Desc / Clms Page number 4>
the hatch 16 will fit in a housing or track 17 facing downwards and running along the edge of the closure panel. A trim 22 is fixed to the interior partition of the Housing.
The upper ends 18 of the hydraulic lifting columns are movably attached to the closure panel.
When raised to the maximum, these columns show hinges 19 which are then located a little above the edge of the hatch. These joints are designed so that they can be made immobile using removable pegs.
. The underside of the lifting crane 7, which can be removed from the suspension rails, is fitted with pulleys or wheels 20. The ends 4 and 4A are provided with a beam arranged across 21 and acting as a stop for the carriage 6 of the crane.
To put the loading and unloading equipment in working order, it is necessary to release the hatch locks and raise the closing panel to a position suitable for mounting the lifting crane. The assembly thereof is done in a simple and known manner; vs. to.d. thanks to four bolts which are then locked.
This assembly work is most easily done by rotating the extension ends down. These will then be above the deck, and the assembly work, taking only a few minutes, will involve no lifting and no risk. Then, you have to hook the four guy ropes and a rope ladder to the closing panel for the man operating the crane. After that, the closing panel is raised to its maximum point. The current is connected, and the discharge work can begin.
If you want to use a grapple, it is advisable to show it as long as the crane proves itself on the bridge. Likewise, if the nature of the loading and the free space under the closing panel allow it, it is not necessary to dismantle the crane from port to port. You just have to block it.

equipment on land, it is better to disassemble the crane and put it aside so as not to interfere with the work. For the closing panel, we practice then entrusts follows. The extension ends are not turned down, but the closure panel is raised first to its maximum high point.
The joints 19 of the two columns on the earth-facing side are released by extracting the pegs, and the two opposite columns are lowered. This way, the closing panel will turn and snap into place. If, from this position, it is necessary to close the; closing panel, this is done by raising the two lowered columns, putting on the locking pins and lowering the closing panel using the four columns.
In the present construction, the operator of the crane enters the control cabin through the surface of the closure panel through the roof of the cabin. This lowering will not involve any risk, if the control cabin is in a canvas position as shown in fig. 1..
