<Desc/Clms Page number 2>
<Desc/Clms Page number 3>
<Desc/Clms Page number 4>
<Desc/Clms Page number 5>
<Desc/Clms Page number 6>

"Foot pedal operated valve"
The invention relates to a valve actuated by pedal, particularly intended to be used as a draw-off valve in pressurized water distribution systems.
In many cases, particularly in household or sanitary installations, it is in the interest of the user to provide a device for controlling the drawing of water which leaves him free to use both hands. This is why foot-operated taps have been proposed, but the devices recommended up to now encountered practical difficulties by causing the obligation to run pipes in the ground at the very location of the control member. ordered.
This is why the distribution of these devices has not been as successful as the advantages of foot control would have justified; these advantages are particularly important for hot water draw-off taps, as the foot control allows the user to regulate the flow and stop it even if his hands are not
<Desc / Clms Page number 2>
not available, which leads to a noticeable saving in hot water which is particularly advantageous when the hot water reserve is limited.
The essential characteristic of the invention consists in that the valve, placed at the most convenient or economical place for its installation, comprises a shutter actuated by a piston which is remotely controlled by hydraulic pressure by means of a Foot pedal actuation device mounted in the ground and connected to the valve by a threadlike hydraulic transmission line.
According to an additional characteristic of the invention, the automatic filling of the hydraulic transmission to compensate for any losses of liquid is provided by a very small passage, deliberately made between the inlet chamber of the valve and the transmission; passage can be.
'constituted by the simple play of the valve piston in its cylinder that by the incomplete sealing of its seal, but it can also' consist of a very narrow hole through the piston or by a bypass channel on this piston.
When the automatic filling passage is provided through the valve piston, this piston can act on the shutter via an auxiliary valve closing the passage in question as soon as the control is actuated and only allowing its reopening when the system has returned to its idle position.
The actuating device may consist of a delivery piston integral with a spring-loaded pedal and this delivery piston may include an air purge duct closed by mounting the pedal head at its end.
In order to make the invention fully understood, an embodiment thereof will be described below with reference to the appended drawing which shows the valve and its actuating device in axial section '. -
<Desc / Clms Page number 3>
The valve body is indicated at 1 comprising an inlet pipe 2 and an outlet pipe 3. Between the two pipes 2 and 3 is provided an annular seat 4 which is associated with a shutter 5 mounted on a support 6 which is pushed. towards the seat by a spring 7 which can be supported for example on a shoulder of an outlet tubular connector 8, so that the spring is provided to close the valve against the pressure of the water inlet which is exerted inside the seat 4.
On the side opposite the pipe 3, the body of the valve is extended by a cylinder 9 in which moves a piston 10 fitted with a sealing ring 11. The ring 11 could be chosen so that it does not produce a absolute sealing and allows a slow flow of water between the piston and the cylinder for the automatic filling of the hydraulic control transmission. However, in the example shown, another passage has been provided for this automatic filling.
The piston '10 comprises, towards the shutter 5, a tubular stem 12 in which can slide with play an axial rod 13 made integral with the shutter 5 and its support 6. The rod 13 carries an auxiliary valve 14 intended to cooperate with a seat at the end of the tail 12, while the piston 10 is pierced with an orifice 15 narrow enough not to prevent its backflow by the pressure exerted by the foot control; when this control pressure is not exerted, the pressure of. 1 water arriving through the pipe 2 separates from the cork valve 14 of the tail 12 allowing water to pass through the orifice 15 to complete the filling of the hydraulic transmission when the shutter 5 is applied to its seat.
As indicated, the narrow orifice 15 and the valve 14 are not essential and their role can be fulfilled.
<Desc / Clms Page number 4>
by the sealing ring 11 if the latter provides clearance - allowing additional filling of the hydraulic transmission without preventing its action.
The bottom of the cylinder 8 communicated by the threadlike tube 16 with the cylinder 17 of the actuating device. This cylinder is embedded in the ground and receives a control piston 18 with sealing ring 19. The piston 18 can move inside the cylinder 17 below an annular cap 20 screwed into the enlarged upper end. cylinder 17, while piston 18 is extended through cap 20 by a rod 21 whose threaded end receives a pedal head 22 pushed upwards with the piston by the action of a spring 23 compressed between the cap 20 and the head 22.
The piston 18 and the rod 21 are pierced with an air purge channel 24 which is closed by mounting the head 22 with the interposition of a seal 25.
To the head 22 which is preferably pierced with holes 26 serving for the passage of air and for screwing and unscrewing this head, is fixed a flexible dome 28 whose periphery is applied to the surface of the ground; this dome, which protrudes very little above the ground, flattens out when the pedal is pressed to control the opening of the valve and the air trapped under this dome can escape through the holes 26 without opposing resistance to the foot pressure.
We will now describe the operation of the device.
In the rest position, that is to say when the pedal 22 is not pressed, the shutter 5 is held in the closed position of the valve by the spring? which applies it against its seat 4. The water inlet pressure exerted by the pipe 2 pushes the piston 10, the tail 12 of which moves slightly away from the valve 14, so that pressurized water can pass through line 16 to cylinder 17 of the actuator, the piston of this cylinder being
<Desc / Clms Page number 5>
pushed back up to the maximum.
In order for the control to function normally, any air from cylinder 17 must be evacuated, and it suffices for this to remove the pedal head 22 which opens the purge channel 21, while the re-installation of this head 22 closes this head. channel.
If one presses on the pedal 22, the piston 18, pushed downwards, pushes the water through the tube 16 towards the cylinder 9. The piston 10 is pushed towards the pipe 3; from the flow of this movement, the tail 12 is applied to the valve 14, so that the liquid discharged by the pipe 16 can not pass the piston 10 and the latter undergoes a displacement corresponding to the lowering of the pedal; at the same time the piston 10 pushes, through the rod 13, the support 6; the shutter 5 is thus removed from the seat 4, allowing water to flow through the tap at a rate which depends on the pressure exerted on the pedal.
As soon as the pedal is released, it is pushed upwards by the action of the spring 23 and the hydraulic transmission fluid is sucked into the cylinder 17, while the piston 10 is brought back by the water. under pressure which feeds the faucet; the components return to their rest position causing the shutter to close. Feed water may flow slowly around seal 11 or through hole 15 to compensate for any loss of fluid in the hydraulic transmission.
It will be noted that the control is remarkably precise and that the flow can be adjusted so as to obtain the exactly desired flow rate, very low marl. the arrangement of the two cylinders 9 and 17 and of the two pistons 10 and 18 makes it possible to choose the sections of the cylinders, so that the control performs under a suitable force, whatever the pressure of the water inlet.
If, for example, the internal diameter of cylinder 17 is two times smaller than that of cylinder 9,
<Desc / Clms Page number 6>
the stroke of the pedal will be four times greater than that of the piston 10 and the force exerted on the latter will be four times greater than the force exerted on the pedal; thus the hydraulic transmission can play the role of a force multiplier with a corresponding reduction in stroke.
There is indicated at 28 a cap screwed onto the connector 8 to be applied to the surface of a wall 29 if the valve is recessed inside this wall as assumed in the drawing. ' The connector 8 can receive a fixed flow spout 30 terminated by a jet breaker or a shower head. A rotating flow spout could be mounted in a tubing with a vertical axis of a cap similar to cap 28! But extending beyond fitting 8 by this vertical tubing.
It will be understood that the exemplary embodiment, described above and shown in the accompanying drawing, is in no way limiting and that various constructive modifications could be provided without separating from the scope of the invention, .. 'In particular, as explained, the seat 14 and the hole 15 could be omitted, while the shutter support 6 would be mounted directly on the piston rod 10.'
Tap. according to the invention can be used, 'not only as a draw-off tap, but also as a tap. stop; for example -to initiate a flush 'of water by feeding the siphon of the flush tank.
