<Desc/Clms Page number 2>

<Desc/Clms Page number 3>
<Desc/Clms Page number 4>
<Desc/Clms Page number 5>
<Desc/Clms Page number 6>
<Desc/Clms Page number 7>

The invention relates to a control valve sensitive to changes in temperature of a fluid; and it relates more particularly to a thermostatic valve serving to control the circulation of a cooling fluid of an internal combustion engine. The invention is not however limited to this particular application, given that it may also be suitable for other installations in which a fluid circulates.
When an internal combustion engine is operating satisfactorily, a thermostatic device, which controls the flow of fluid and is established in the engine cooling circuit, regulates the engine temperature by varying the flow rate of the fluid. in said cooling circuit and, consequently, the temperature of the fluid in this circuit. The engine cooling circuit is arranged in such a way that, under normal operating conditions, it maintains the engine temperature at a predetermined value. -
When an internal combustion engine is malfunctioning, it frequently results in the engine starting to overheat.
When this abnormal heating takes place, the fluid circulating in the cooling circuit reaches an excessive temperature and a thermostatic control valve, established in the cooling circuit of the internal combustion engine, is forced to open to the maximum in order to that the refrigerant circulates with the greatest possible flow in the cooling circuit.
When this happens, it often happens that the cooling circuit is not able to effectively cool the engine even though as much fluid as possible is circulating in the circuit. found in this circuit itself undergoes excessive heating and the thermostatic valve, which controls the circulation of the fluid, reaches a very high temperature. It is often the case that the very high temperature reached by the thermostatic valve is the cause of deterioration of this device, which prevents its correct functioning. The thermostatic valve can be damaged or deteriorated to the point of being held in its closed position even if the temperature of the refrigerant reaches a very high value.
When the damaged valve closes, the circulation of the coolant, which contributes to a certain extent to the cooling of the engine, is completely interrupted. This further increases the temperature of the engine and the severity of damage to it.
It is therefore obvious that the ideal thermostatic valve would be one which would include a "harmless failure" device ?, that is to say a valve provided with means ensuring its maintenance in the open position after it has been put there by very high temperatures produced inside the engine cooling system. A thermostatic valve of this kind would also be advantageous if it remained automatically -open in the event of deterioration. When the maximum flow of refrigerant can circulate in the engine. cooling circuit, although the engine heats up beyond the allowable temperatures, maximum protection is nevertheless provided to the engine.
One of the objects of the invention is therefore to provide a valve sensitive to temperature changes and controlling the circulation of a fluid, this valve comprising means by which the valve is maintained in its position of. maximum opening as soon as the conditions which determined this maximum opening of the valve occur.
Decommissioning the thermostatic control valve remains
<Desc / Clms Page number 2>
te safe because it remains open even if it has been damaged by the effect of excessive temperatures.
The thermostatic control valve is space-saving and compact and has a long service life under normal conditions of use. In addition, it has a minimum number of parts and can be assembled and manufactured at a relatively low cost.
The invention consists, mainly, in making the thermostatic control valves of the type in question comprise a movable shutter which can be applied to a valve seat so as to close the passage reserved for the valve. circulation of the fluid, means sensitive to temperature variations and fixed to said shutter so as to move the latter as a function of these temperature variations, and other means, established on the passage of the movable shutter and proper to lock it in a certain position.

- Figure 16 shows, in perspective, the variant of the locking member established according to the invention.
The valve, established according to the invention, comprises a body 10 provided with a substantially cylindrical part 11 surrounded by a peripheral flange
12 perpendicular to the cylindrical part 11. A rib 13, forming the internal extension of the flange 12, ends with an annular seat 14 through which a passage for a fluid passes. A bridge 15, of curvilinear shape, is fixed, by its two ends, to one face of the internal rib 13. The curvilinear bridge 15 consists of an elongated element, with a U-shaped section, the wings of which are designated by 16. Substantially in the center of the bridge 15 is screwed a rod 17 having a threaded part 18.
On the other face of the rib 13, two arms 19, approximately parallel to the cylindrical part 11, are fixed by one end to the rib 13, the other end of these arms 19 supporting an annular guide. 20 integral with these arms.
A movable shutter 26 is biased towards the seat 14 by a helical spring 28, one end of which surrounds the annular guide 20 and abuts against the arms 19. The other end of the spring 28 bears against the shutter 26 of the device.
A housing 30 or the like is attached to the shutter 26 to which it is substantially concentric. This housing has an upper closing wall 31.
The housing 30 is provided with an opening, made in the center of the upper closure wall 31, through which the rod 17 can slide to enter the housing 30. A body 34, of resilient material, is accommodated in the housing. 30 and has an upper flange 36 which rests against the upper closure wall 31. The lower end of the elastic body 34 abuts against an end wall 37 of the housing 30 which is opposite the upper wall 31. The rod 17 is housed in an elongated blind hole 38 formed in the elastic body 34. The elongated hole 38 thus passes through part of the height of the elastic body 34.
In this housing 30 is also housed an expandable and contractile substance 40, with a very high coefficient of expansion, placed between the side walls of the housing 30 and the elastic body 34.
During operation under normal conditions, the movable shutter is continuously urged by the expandable substance 40 towards a position such, with respect to the seat 14, that the circulation of fluid in the engine cooling circuit is correctly regulated. Thus, the temperature of the refrigerant fluid contained in the cooling circuit is suitably controlled. The volume of the expandable substance 40 inside the housing 30, relative to the volumetric capacity of this housing, is adjusted so that the movable shutter 26 of the valve begins to open at a determined temperature. . This temperature is called the "opening temperature of the thermostatic fluid control device".
When this thermostatic controller is subjected to temperatures reaching or exceeding this value, the expandable and contractile substance 40 expands. The expansion of this expandable substance 40 has the effect of exerting a high pressure on the elastic body 34, so that the rod 17 is subjected to considerable pressure from the elastic body 34. The pressure produced on the rod 17 by the expansion expandable substance 40 tends to close hole 38 in elastic body 34, causing rod 17 to move relative to housing

30. Because the rod 17 is firmly fixed by its threaded part 18 to the curvilinear bridge 15, the rod 17 cannot move. However, the housing 30 is only attached to: 'movable shutter 26.
Consequently, when the expansion of the expandable and contractile substance 40 occurs, the casing 30 moves up and down, looking at the figures, bringing with it the movable shutter 26 which is integral with it. During normal operation, the greatest amplitude of movement of the movable shutter 26 is substantially that which enables it to reach the position shown in FIG. 5. The movement of the housing 30 is guided by the two annular guides 20. The actuation of the movable shutter 26 can be carried out by any suitable means. In the case considered, this shutter is actuated by the expandable and contractile substance 40 contained in the housing 30, which acts on the rod 17.
The operation of the movable shutter 26 of the valve can also be provided by a manometric capsule or by any other suitable device.
An elastic locking member 50, consisting of a single metal wire, has two ends 52 inserted into two openings made in one of the arms 19 near the rib 13. The two ends 52 of the elastic member latch 50 abut against cylindrical portion 11, causing other parts of spring 50 to look as shown in Figure 2. A hook or shoulder 54 of latch spring 50 is formed near a curved portion 53 and can receive and retain the movable shutter 26 when the latter performs a movement reaching the maximum amplitude.
This maximum amplitude movement of the movable shutter 26 is due, of course, to the influence exerted by excessive temperatures, very substantially exceeding normal, on the thermostatic valve. When the temperature of the thermostatic device increases to the point of substantially exceeding the normal operating value of the engine, the expandable and contractile substance 40, contained in the housing 30, continues to move the movable shutter 26 away from the seat 14.
When the movable shutter 26 moves normally towards its open position, it can come into contact with the elastic locking member 50 (FIG. 5). However, when abnormal motor operation and excessive heating of the fluid occur, the movable shutter 26 opens strongly and moves away from the seat 14 to such an extent that the movable shutter 26 protrudes beyond the curvilinear portion 53. and is retained by the shoulder 54 of the spring 50 (Figure 6). This abnormal operation of the engine generally indicates the presence of serious problems in the engine.
These abnormal temperatures can increase to the point of damaging the thermostatic valve and the movable shutter 26 can be biased towards its closed position by the spring 26 even if the temperature is excessively high. Consequently, in order to ensure the maximum protection for the motor, the elastic member 50 locks the movable shutter 26 in its open position, which allows the circulation, with the greatest possible flow, of refrigerant fluid. through the passage delimited by the valve seat 14.
When these excessive temperatures occur inside a cooling circuit to such an extent that a thermostatic valve, established in accordance with the invention, remains open (figure 6), it is generally essential to carry out repairs. in the engine. The person to whom the engine is entrusted, or the mechanic, must inquire about the state in which the thermostatic valve is located by restoring the movable shutter 26 to its normal position by moving this shutter 26 away from the valve. shoulder
<Desc / Clms Page number 5>
54 of the spring 50, provided however that the thermostatic tape is not damaged. The attendant or mechanic can examine and relocate the valve by opening the cooling circuit to make this valve accessible.
If the movable shutter 26 is not restored to its normal operating position and if the motor then runs satisfactorily, the movable shutter 26, being locked in its open position, allows circulation. coolant at maximum flow, preventing the engine from operating at the correct temperature.
This operation of the engine at low temperature indicates on use that something sufficiently abnormal in the operation of the engine has occurred to warrant examination of the engine and theimostatic valve. The movable shutter 26 is retained in a wide open position (Figure 7) and the expandable and contractile substance 40, by being cooled, decreases the pressure previously exerted by the elastic body 34 so that the elongated hole 38 , formed inside the elastic body 34, is partially unoccupied (Figure 7).
If the user has not noticed the excessive temperature reached by the engine, the abnormally "cold" running of the engine then leads him to check the thermostatic valve and the engine in order to detect the cause of this. anomaly. Therefore, it is evident that the thermostatic fluid control valve, established according to the invention, continues to function reliably despite the failure and helps to protect the engine even if the thermostatic valve has been damaged by a fault that has occurred. in engine condition.
Figures 8, 9, 10 and 11 show a preferred variant for producing the thermostatic valve in question.
The locking spring, used for this preferred variant, is substantially identical to the locking spring of the embodiment described above. The variant comprises two arms 60, 62, similar to the arms 19 mentioned above. The arm 60 is provided with two notches 64 established near the annular guide 20. These notches 64 retain and guide the movement of a lower part 65 of a locking spring 66 similar to the locking spring 50 described above, This The locking spring 66 has a retaining shoulder 67 similar to the shoulder 54 of the spring 50.
Thus, when the locking spring 66 is biased by the movable shutter 26 (FIG. 10), the part of the spring 66 which is adjacent to the rib 13 undergoes bending. The lower part 65 of the spring 66 does not move away from the housing 30 as does the lower part of the spring 50, but the lower part 65 of the spring 66 moves in a direction parallel to the longitudinal axis of the housing 30 (Figure 10 ). Therefore, as the movable shutter 26 moves until it is retained by the shoulder 67 of the locking spring 66, the movable shutter 26 is held in a firm and rigid manner in its open position.
As has already been said about the first embodiment, the maximum displacement of the movable shutter 26, that is to say up to the point where it is retained by the shoulder 67 of the locking spring 66, does not occurs only in truly abnormal operating conditions. Usually, the movable shutter, during the normal operation of the thermostatic device, moves between its closed position and that in which it comes into slight contact with the spring 66. It is understood that the the locking spring, which retains the movable shutter 26 in its open position, does not necessarily have to have the exact shape indicated in the figures, since any other resilient member of suitable profile can be used.

The variant shown in Figures 12 to 16 relates to a locking means comprising a spring or equivalent elastic member in the form of a horseshoe or? (Figure 16), 'A locking member 70 in the form of a horseshoe is provided with a base 72 attachable to one of the arms 19 adjacent to the cylindrical part 11 of the device. Each of the arms 19 is provided with a pair of tabs 74 which help to hold the base 72 of the locking member 70 in its correct position. The locking member 70 can be mounted on either one. another of the arms 19, between the arm 19 and the cylindrical part 11. Consequently, as can be seen clearly from the drawing, the member 70 is housed in the body 10 of the valve against the cylindrical part 11 of the valve. rib 13.
The locking member 70 is provided with two fingers 76 which can move elastically relative to the base 72. At the end of each of the fingers 76 is a chin 77 substantially perpendicular to the corresponding end of the finger.
After having fixed the base 72 of the locking member 70 against the flat part of the rib 13 while maintaining it in this position with the help of the tabs 74, the fingers 76 of the locking member 70 are moved apart. - lastically -and outwardly near the rib 13 (Figures 12 and 14). After the fingers 76 have been forced and held in the mounting position, a small amount of solder 78 or other suitable fusible material is attached to the rib 13 as well as to each of the chins 77 of the spring 70. Each solder portion 78 serves to fix one of the fingers 76 to the rib 13 (Figure 13).
Thus, the fingers 76 are held in place near the rib 13 of the. body 10 and they are resiliently resilient to a position in which they are at a certain distance from the path of the movable shutter 26 of the valve when subjected to changes in temperature.
If the valve is influenced by abnormally high temperatures, the movable shutter 26 moves to an open position as a result of the expansion of the expandable and contractile substance 40 contained in the housing 30. These abnormal temperatures can reach values such that the valve eventually deteriorates. If this eventuality occurs, the elastic member 28 can exert sufficient pressure to force the movable shutter to resume its closed position, even if this shutter were to remain open to allow the circulation of the refrigerant fluid with a maximum flow rate.
When the valve is subjected to an abnormal temperature, having a determined value, the weld 78 melts, which allows the elastic fingers 76 to elastically relax inward (Figure 13). The chin bars 77 of the spring 70 are therefore engaged in the passage of the movable shutter 26, that is to say between the latter and the seat 14 (FIGS. 13 and 15). Consequently, the movable shutter 26 can no longer move back until it comes to rest on its seat 14 and remains in an open position.
It follows that the fluid can flow freely through the lumen formed in the center of the seat 14, and even if the valve were seriously damaged by the excessive temperature to which it is subjected, the fluid in the circulation circuit could s 'flow freely and exert a certain cooling effect on the engine.
The locking member 70 can be re-engaged by releasing the valve from the fluid circulation circuit. If it is found that the valve is in no way damaged by the excessive temperatures it has undergone, the fingers 76 can be moved apart again and kept in this position in the vicinity of the cylindrical part 11 by welding the fingers 76. at the rib 13.
It is understood that the fingers 76 can be held in
<Desc / Clms Page number 7>
their position of elastic stress by placing weld at the ends of the chinsticks 77, as shown in the drawing, unless the weld
78 is placed between the cylindrical portion 11 and the fingers 76, which retains the fingers 76 against the cylindrical portion 11 rather than against the rib 13. It is also understood that the fingers 76 may be retained in their constrained position. elastic by any other thermostatic means other than a fusible substance such as the aforementioned solder.
For example, a suitable thermostatic device could be used to maintain the fingers 76 in their position of elastic stress and to release them when the valve is subjected to an abnormal temperature having a predetermined value.
As goes without saying and as it follows moreover already from the foregoing, the invention is in no way limited to that of its modes of application or to those of the embodiments of its various parts, having been more especially considered; on the contrary, it embraces all the variants.
