<Desc/Clms Page number 2>
panneau.
<Desc/Clms Page number 3>

REVENDICATIONS.

The present invention relates to a roofing element intended in particular for the construction of roofs for buildings and other uses. It also relates to roofs made by means of said element.
The usual covering elements for roofs generally have the drawback of having a small surface area and consequently of requiring the use of battens and battens. The thin sheet metal roofing elements are larger in size, but have no rigidity and have the same disadvantage; corrugated sheets do not prevent the presence of numerous transverse and longitudinal joints in the roof.
The invention proposes to produce a covering element which does not have the aforementioned drawbacks. This element has the following advantages and characteristics - it can be produced continuously, in any length and subsequently cut into elements of the desired length; the lengths thus obtained make it possible to cover the important part of the roof without transverse joints; - these elements have the desired resistance to transverse bending but are flexible in the longitudinal direction and can thus be formed into rolls for storage and transport and be unwound at the place of use; - they are metallic and their "upper" face, that is to say that which is intended to constitute the upper face of the roof, is smooth; - both sides are protected against corrosion.
This element, according to the invention, is remarkable, in particular in that it consists of a metal strip-panel comprising a strip of flexible and smooth metal sheet intended to constitute the upper part, and fixed transverse reinforcements. to the underside of said sheet metal strip by welding or any other process.
The panel strip can thus be rolled up for transport and storage and be unrolled on site, if necessary even in its final position on the roof.
According to a first embodiment of the invention, said transverse reinforcements are formed by a continuous sheet metal strip, of the same width as the upper strip, corrugated transversely and fixed to the upper strip by at least some of their points of contact.
According to another embodiment, said transverse reinforcements are constituted by isolated reinforcements, in particular, by folded strips. Preferably, such a reinforcement has a transverse shape which ensures a distribution of the material such that the neutral axis of bending of the whole of the strip-panel is at an equal or approximately equal distance from the upper face. of the smooth sheet and the underside of the part of the reinforcement furthest from the smooth sheet. In other words, the neutral axis is equidistant or roughly equidistant from the end fibers. For the same moment of inertia and a given stress of the metal, the flexural strength is thus maximum.
According to a variant of the invention, finally, a free margin is provided on the longitudinal edges of the strip of smooth sheet metal, in order to allow the folding of this strip on its edges at the time of use, the reinforcements being in this case of length less than the width of the strip-

sign. The invention further relates to a roof remarkable in that it is constituted by elements of the above-defined type, each element extending seamlessly on the roof according to one of the dimensions of the roof, and n ' being supported only by its longitudinal edges, the juxtaposed elements may or may not be joined by a joint cover.
According to the preferred embodiment of the invention, each element (or strip-panel) is arranged in the direction of the slope of the roof. It has the length of a slope or of two opposite slopes and therefore has no transverse joint to the strip-panel, that is to say located horizontally on the roof, but it comes within the framework of the The invention of arranging this strip-panel in the horizontal direction In this case, there is no joint in the direction of the line of greatest slope.
The rafters supporting the longitudinal edges of the panel strip can be formed by strips folded in the form of channels. reversed, comprising on each side a shoulder intended to support the edge of the strip-panel. These strips can be bent to form a gutter, in order to collect the condensation water. They can also be arranged to support heat-insulating panels, either directly or via crossbars.
In some cases, panel strips can be used singly or by simple juxtaposition with similar panel strips.
In certain cases, the joint between the strips-panels must ensure the watertightness. The length of the reinforcements then being less than the width of the strip-panel, this sealing can be obtained by bending the edges at right angles and by bending the edge thus folded on one of the sides so as to cover the edge. folded of the adjoining panel, these folding operations being done at the time of use after having unwound and cut the panel to the suitable length, It is also possible to fold only at right angles to each of the edges and cap the folded edges adjacent to the 'Using a joint cover providing protection against vertical drops of water.
Fixing and sealing can also be achieved, with or without folding the edges of the panel strip, using a joint cover which rests on each panel strip by means of a gasket such as lead wire, rubber, greased braids, plastic, etc.
The joint cover in question is tightened on the support rafter or any other special part and thus crushes the plastic lining on the upper face of the panel strip, this tightening being carried out by any suitable means.
The strip-panel can be manufactured continuously in unlimited length, then cut at the end of manufacture to the desired length, this cut being able to be straight, skewed or of any shape. This cut can be made either at the factory or at the place and time of use.
This strip panel is preferably made of sheet steel, but the invention extends to a strip panel of any suitable metal or alloy.
When the material used is susceptible to corrosion, this panel strip is protected on both sides.
The protection of the upper face of the smooth sheet, subjected to bad weather in the case of roofs, can be carried out by any means: galvanization, coatings of any kind, metallic or not, paint, lacquer, varnish, sheets. glued rubber or plastic, etcooo
The protection against corrosion of the underside can also be done in any way and if necessary, different from that of the exposed face. If there is a tubular space between the smooth sheet and its
<Desc / Clms Page number 3>
reinforcements a covering product such as paint, lacquer, varnish, can be sprayed using rods penetrating into this tubular space.
The order of the two operations (welding of the smooth sheet to its reinforcements and protection) can be arbitrary, depending on the nature of the protection.
The basic protection (for example metallization) can thus be done before fixing the reinforcements on the smooth sheet and the external protection (for example painting) can be done after.

The sheet 2 can also, as shown in FIG. 3, be stiffened by individual reinforcements 7, the transverse shape (Fig. 4) of these reinforcements can be established as shown at 8 so as to achieve the desired distribution of the material.
Two elements of this type can be assembled, as shown in FIG. 5, the edge of the smooth sheet being simply folded 90 at 9 on one of the sides and bearing on the other side at 10 a double fold covering the fold 9 of the neighboring element. In Fig. 6, the 90 ° fold is made for both sides and is capped with a joint cover 11.
In Fig. 7, two elements 1 are assembled using a joint cover 12 tightened on the rafter 13 by any process (not shown and which a plastic insert 14 crushes on the upper face of the smooth sheet metal strip 2. Each strip-panel is supported by a shoulder 15 formed on the rafter 13.
In the embodiment of a roof shown in Figs.
8 and 9, we find the strip of smooth sheet 2, the reinforcement 4, the joint cover 12, and the plastic lining 14. The method of tightening the joint cover on the rafter is, in the example shown carried out in l 'using a bolt 16

screwed into a nut 17 fixed to the rafter, a sealing washer 18 being disposed between the head of the bolt and the gasket cover. The strip forming a chevron is folded at 19 to form the gutter intended to receive the condensation water. The thermal insulation panel 20 is supported by a cross member 21 which itself rests on the folded part 22 of the strip forming a rafter.
It is understood, in general, that the invention is not limited to the embodiments of elements or roofs shown and described which have been chosen only by way of example.
The use of this strip-panel is moreover not limited to the construction of roofs and extends to all other uses which may be appropriate for such a panel rolled up for transport and unrolled at the place of installation. Use such as for example floors, furniture tops etc., and in general all uses where the ordinary board is employed where there is only flexural strength required in one direction.
