<Desc/Clms Page number 2>

The invention relates to a filter applicable to respiratory protection apparatus for filtering suspended substances, said filter being made of paper, cardboard or other similar material, having rectilinear parallel folds and being provided with. an air-impermeable envelope surrounding the pleat device.

Such filters have been manufactured by interlocking the pleated filter layer between two cores of molds or forms which protruded on the outside all the way from a small edge of the pleated layer. The device thus obtained was introduced into a mold or a hollow form 'and 1,' the space formed between the form cores and the hollow forine was filled,

Such manufacture of the filter gives rise to relatively high costs for the execution equipment and proves to be expensive and complicated.
Special difficulties are then encountered when filters of this kind have to be made in dimensions which make them suitable for mounting in spacious protective filter devices.
Another difficulty lies in the method of fixing the filter for substances in suspension in the filter box of the installation which additionally contains the filter for substances in suspension and also granular masses which fix the gases.
This being so, the invention consists in folding back in the direction of the longest ply the ends of the plies of a pleated filter which protrude from the core of the form, so that the end of each ply covers in this state the adjacent fold, and to glue using an adhesive, for example latex, a strip of ductile material around the perimeter of the pleated, so as to obtain an envelope impermeable to substances in suspension,
To ensure a junction impermeable to gases or at least to suspended substances between the pleated filter and the filter housing,
It is advisable to give the ductile strip impermeable to suspended substances sufficient width to exceed the height of the pleated filter to such an extent that the excess part of the strip can be used for mounting the pleated in the filter housing. For this purpose, the protruding edge of the strip is folded outwards, constituting a connecting or junction element in the form of a rim which, by its clamping between the edge and the housing cover, secures the substance filter. suspended in the filter apparatus.
In addition, it is advisable to place around the periphery of the expandable strip still a mechanically strong strip of cardboard, heavy paper or their equivalents and to stick it there, for example, around the expandable strip. In this way a pleating guaranteed in a wide measure against deformation is obtained, which can be stacked in the store, so that it can be mounted in the case if necessary.
The accompanying drawing shows an exemplary embodiment of the invention.
Figure 1 is a plan view of a completed filter.
Figure 2 is a partial vertical section through the folds ;, and Figure 3 is a section similar to Figure 2 which shows the expandable strip folded back as a flange or rim.
Figure 1 shows that according to the new method of manufacture, the ends 1 of the plies 2 are folded in the direction of the longest ply of the filter so that they touch or cover the neighboring plies and
<Desc / Clms Page number 2>
that a continuous closure of the folds is already formed on the peripheral part.
As shown in Fig. 2 this rim of the pleated device is glued to the ductile strip 3 by means of an adhesive manner. The upper part 4 of the strip 3 protrudes over the pleat by such an amount that, as shown in figure 3, it can be folded back in the form of a flange or a rim and thus obtain the connection or junction to the filter box.
In order to reinforce the filter of suspended substances, a rigid strip 5 is still glued around the periphery of the ductile strip 3, which gives the filters the strength necessary to prevent deformation and to allow them to be stacked for storage.
