<Desc/Clms Page number 2>
<Desc/Clms Page number 3>
<Desc/Clms Page number 4>
EMI4.1
Phényîmêthyîdichîorosiîane 59,5 M

<tb>
<tb> Glycérol <SEP> (100 <SEP> %) <SEP> 54,4 <SEP> M
<tb>
EMI4.3
<tb> Anhydride <SEP> maléique <SEP> 171 <SEP> M
<tb>
<tb> Acide <SEP> adipique <SEP> 92 <SEP> M

<tb>
<tb>
<tb>
<tb> Ethylène-diamine <SEP> 21,4 <SEP> M <SEP>
<tb>
<Desc/Clms Page number 5>

<tb>

The present invention relates to resins prepared by reacting together certain acidic polyesteramides and certain siloxanes as well as to electrical equipment, for example enamelled metal wire, in the manufacture of which these resins are used.
It has already been proposed to react alkyd resins with a siloxane to obtain a mixed resinous composition. The term "alkyl resin" is used to denote the polyester-type reaction product of a polyhydric alcohol and a polycarboxylic acid exclusively. However, the products obtained do not have significantly better properties other than An improvement in heat resistance which might normally be expected from the proportion of siloxane present.
Thus, for example, compositions comprising approximately 50% alkyd resin and 50% siloxane resin reacted together show only a moderate improvement in thermal stability when compared to the stability of the alkyd resin. alone, and a substantially lower thermal stability than that of the polysiloxane resin alone. In general, the improvement in thermal stability is relatively small for the high proportion of the much more expensive siloxane resin which is reacted with the alkyd resin.
Other properties such as hardness, adhesion to metal and other surfaces are not appreciably improved in these known mixed reaction products, relative to the properties of the alkyd resin or the siloxane resin alone. . The solvent resistance of the resulting mixed reaction product is usually lower than the solvent resistance of alkyd resins.
It has been found that the combination of certain polyesteramides with a relatively small proportion of certain selected siloxanes produces copolymer resins whose properties are significantly improved relative to those resins previously obtainable by combining siloxanes with alkyd resins. The new copolymer resins are particularly suitable for coating electrical conductors and producing enameled metal wires capable of being used at elevated temperatures for long periods of time.
The invention will emerge clearly from the detailed description of several preferred embodiments, described by way of example with reference to the accompanying drawing.
Figure 1 is a graph showing the relationship between the composition of the copolymer and the static life and scratch resistance of the wire coated with the compositions, and
Figure 2 is a partial plan view of a wire coated with the compositions of the invention.
According to the invention, the mixed reaction products from (A) 15 to 35 parts by weight of certain siloxane resins and (B) 85 to 65 parts by weight of certain acidic polyesteramides possess unexpected thermal stability, electro-electro properties. outstanding insulators, high abrasion resistance, good flexibility, and a high degree of solvent resistance.
In particular, the resinous copolymer reaction product comprises (a) a polymeric siloxane obtained by hydrolyzing and condensing, with water and a polyhydric alcohol, a mixture of hydrolyzable phenyl-methyl-silanes of the formula
RxSIY (4-x) where R represents phenyl and methyl groups, Y represents an easily hydrolyzable group and x has an average value of 1.3 to le9y the ratio between phenyl and methyl groups varying between 3: 1 and 1: 2.
Added water
<Desc / Clms Page number 2>
for hydrolysis is present in an amount required to hydrolyze at least 20%, but not more than 90% of the hydrolyzable Y groups in the silanes and the polyhydric alcohol is used in an amount porpre to provide an average of at least 0.6 hydroxyl group per molecule to react with each of the hydrolyzable Y groups remaining in the silanes, but not with more than 80% of the total number of hydroxyl groups. Particularly good results have been obtained when 1 to 2 hydroxyl groups of glycerol are used to react with the Y groups. Silanes can include chlorides, ethoxides or other amino groups as hydrolyzable groups.
Suitable silanes are in particular dimethyldichlorosilane, phenyl-methyl-dichlorosilane, phenyl-triethoxy silane, phenyl-methyl-diethoxy-silane and methyl-triethoxy-silane. Suitable polyhydric alcohols are glycerol, ethylene glycol, diethylene glycol, propylene glycol and pentaerythritol. Mixtures of 2 or more polyhydric alcohols can be used., The siloxane obtained is characterized in that it comprises both Si-O-Si bonds and Si-O-R 'bonds, where R' represents remainder of the polyhydric alcohol from which some of the hydroxyl groups have been removed.
The siloxane is soluble in solvents and able to react further due to the presence of the available, unreacted hydroxyl groups of the polyhydric alcohol residue. Some hydroxyl groups can be attached to silicon as a result of hydrolysis of hydrolyzable groups in silanes by water.
The polyesteramide (B) is prepared separately by heating (a) 25 to 45 mole% of an acidic compound selected from the group consisting of ethylenically unsaturated dicarboxylic acids and their anhydrides, (b) 15 to 35 mole% of an acidic compound without ethylenic unsaturation consisting of at least one of the compounds of the groups formed by dicarboxylic acids and their anhydrides having at least two non-carboxylic carbon atoms and not comprising any active groups other than carboxyl or carboxyl groups- anhydride, the ': total of:
two acidic elements representing at least 52 mole% but not more than 65 mole% (c) 10 to 40 mole% of polyhydric alcohols, these polyhydric alcohols having, on average, not more than 3.5 hydroxyl groups per molecule, (d) 4 to 35 mole% of at least one amino alcohol selected from the group consisting of monoethanolamine and monoisopropanolamine, and (e) 4 to 15 mole% to a diamino compound selected from the group formed by ethylene diamine, propylene diamine and urea.
Examples of ethylenically unsaturated acids (a) are: maleic anhydride, fumaric acid, citraconic anhydride and itaconic acid Examples of saturated acids (b) are adipic acid, l succinic acid, sebacic acid, diglycollic acid and succinic anhydrous. Suitable polyhydric alcohols are glycerol, ethylene glycol, propylene glycol, diethylene glycol and pentaerythritol. A maximum of 15 mole% of the ethylenically unsaturated dicarboxylic acid or its anhydride can be replaced by phthalic anhydride or isophthalic acid.
In polyesteramide, the combination of polyhydric alcohol, amino alcohol and diamine provides a stoichiometric lack of relative amine and hydroxyl groups. carboxyl groups provided by the acidic compounds (a) and (b), an acid anhydride group being equivalent to them carboxyl groups. The polyesteramide resin must comprise unreacted carboxyl groups in a number equal to plus or minus 20% to the number of unreacted hydroxyl groups in the polyhydric alcohol used in the preparation of the siloxane resin. AT.
The mixture of (a), (b), (c), (d) and (e) is heated to a temperature
<Desc / Clms Page number 3>
re raised from 140 to 210 C in about an hour.
Heating should be continued until the polyesteramide resin has a softening temperature of 40-100 C in the ball-ring test method. In the case of large quantities of polyesteramides, the heating may require 10 hours or more to achieve the desired temperature in the ball-ring process.
Siloxane resin A and polyesteramide resin B can each be prepared in solution in a suitable solvent, such as cresol for example, then the solutions are combined and the mixture is further heated to a temperature of 100 to 200 C for at least one hour. less 15 minutes. One test to establish whether a suitable mixed reaction product has been obtained is to dissolve the resin in an amount of cresol sufficient to form a 20% solution; this solution must have a viscosity of
30 to 60 seconds in a Zahn # 1 cuvette at 30 C, although deviations may occur.
The mixed reaction product can be dissolved in suitable solvents, for example m, p-cresol, cresylic acid, ethyl phenols, furfural, and the hydrocarbon distillates of boiling oil between. 130 and 200 C, and in mixtures of two or more of these solvents.
Particularly important properties of enamel wire used for high temperature industrial applications are its scratch resistance, a criterion of its tenacity and hardness, and the time during which the enamel wire can be exposed to high temperatures before the enamel exhibits cracks or otherwise physically yields what is referred to herein as "thermal endurance". The scratch testing machine described in U.S. Patent No. 2,372,093 has been found to give very reproducible and accurate results for enameled wire scratch testing, and this machine has been used in all enamel wire testing. the.
For static thermal endurance testing, a very revealing test involves winding a number of turns of # 17 A.W.G. (1.15 mm in diameter) for example on a mandrel of 16 mm in diameter and to place the coil thus obtained in an oven where it is brought to a high temperature, generally 275 C, and examined from time to time for cracks and peeling or other defects, the time required to bring these defects to light being called the "static life:" The stresses created in the enamel by the winding and exposure to oxygen at temperature high temperature at which the test is carried out gives important comparative indications of the life and stability of the enamel.
FIG. 1 of the drawing represents average curves obtained by comparing the results of the scratching and thermal endurance tests carried out on a certain number of siloxane-polyesteramide copolymers of the present invention in different proportions by weight of siloxane. The scratch resistance curve slowly descends from a high average value of about 1700 g for a polyesteramide containing no siloxane, to a value of about 1500 g for a copolymer containing 15% siloxane, then slightly. more rapidly up to values of 1000 g for a copolymer containing 30% siloxane, then 850 g for a copolymer containing 35% siloxane.
The average thermal endurance curve, expressed in days at 275 C, starts at an average of 5 days for the polyesteramide alone, reaches approximately 8 days for a copolymer with 15% siloxane, then a maximum endurance. The thermal endurance of about 30 days is obtained with a 20-25% siloxane copolymer, the thermal endurance decreasing steadily up to about 23 days for a 35% siloxane copolymer. The optimum combination of thermal endurance and scratch resistance is obtained for copolymer compositions containing
<Desc / Clms Page number 4>
from 15 to 35% by weight of siloxane.
It is surprising that the scratch resistance and the static life decrease after this optimum range for compositions containing more than 35% silbxane.
Of course, the curves of FIG. 1 represent average values for a fairly large number of compositions and values above and below these curves can be obtained in tests carried out on particular copolymer compositions. For a given composition, the thermal endurance varies much more than the scratch resistance.
The examples which follow illustrate the implementation of the invention.

The siloxane prepared in part A is then added to the polyesteramide B and the combined mixture is heated for 1 1/2 hour at a temperature of 165,173 C. Then a mixture of equal parts of cresol and a mixture of a cresol is added. distillation of petroleum aromatic hydrocarbons to form a solution containing approximately 26% resinous solids. The enamel contains approximately 20% by weight siloxane.
The solution of the copolymer reaction product of Example 1 is

applied to copper wire and baked at 475-500 C for 30 seconds to one minute. Several coats are applied so as to obtain a total thickness of 0.025 mm of enamel on a wire n 17 (1.15 mm). As shown in fig. 2 The enameled wire comprises a copper conductor 10 and a layer 12 formed of the vulcanized copolymer resin.
The scratch resistance of the enamel wire varies between 1000 g and 1450 g in the testing machine mentioned above. The scratch resistance of a commercial 100% siloxane resin on wire varies between 255 and 400 g in the same test. Several turns of the enamel wire are wound on a mandrel 16 mm in diameter and the coil thus obtained is placed in an oven where it is maintained at a temperature of 275 C. The wire on the mandrel is examined day after day and it is not observed no defect in the coating before the 19th day when cracks were observed for the first time in the enamel layer. This coil test gives indications which correspond well to the resistance of electrical devices equipped with these enamelled wires, at high temperatures.
Ordinary organic enamels which are now widely available in the market only last for one day on average.
The best polyesteramide enamel wire will last about 4 days under the same conditions while a 100% siloxane enamel coating will last 30 days in this test. After staying in toluene for 48 hours, the enameled wire of the present example was subjected to the scratch resistance test and it was found that it had not undergone appreciable changes.
Enamelled wire - * CI. the 100% siloxane resin has a scratch resistance of less than 114 g after residence in toluene and is so deteriorated that it is virtually unusable. The enameled wire of this example has a dielectric breakdown voltage of 4,000 to 6,000 volts while for the 100% siloxane enameled wire this voltage is 1,000 to 1,500 volts. In many other tests often used to determine the characteristics of enameled wires, the example wire exhibits remarkable characteristics.
An aluminum wire coated with the copolymer resin of Example 1 has greater thermal stability than copper wire; the physical properties are equal to those of the same enamel on copper.

Suitable halohydrins are epichlorohydrin, glycerolichlorohydrin and epibromohydrin. The preparation of suitable resinous epoxies is described in U.S. Patent Nos. 2,595,558, 2,506,486, and 2,324,483.
The compositions of the invention can be applied not only to bare wires of copper, aluminum, iron or to nickel-plated wires, but also to conductors covered with glass fibers or ambest fibers. These conductors may have been surrounded by ribbons of fibrous sheet material. In addition, the conductors may have been covered with tapes comprising mica flakes before applying the resinous compositions of the invention thereto.
The resinous compositions of the invention can be applied as insulating varnishes and impregnation compounds. But their most remarkable properties are manifested when used as enamels for threads.
