D'autres particularités et avantages de l'invention découlent de la description qui suit et qui concerne un mode de réalisation donné à titre d'exemple, et se lisant en regard des dessins annexés dans lesquels;
<Desc/Clms Page number 3>

This invention relates to the production of the refractory materials. In Belgian patent n.528334 filed in the name of the same Company on
April 23, 1954, and entitled "Improvements in refractory materials" is described a process for producing refractory bodies or parts comprising alumina and molybdenum disilicide. These bodies can be manufactured. so as to be homogeneous with any resistivity within very wide limits or else a part can be provided with a surface coating of bisilicide which constitutes a material endowed with good conductivity.
In the process described, the part is produced by one or more hot pressing operations and when one or more relatively thin layers are to be produced in the composite part, it is sometimes difficult to place the elements in the correct positions in the part. press before applying heat and pressure.
The object of the present invention is to reduce or eliminate this difficulty.
In accordance with the invention, the material of which the thin layer is to be made is prepared either in the form of a coherent flexible layer, or in the form of a coating or whitewash, containing, with a view to the desired result, a suitable suspending or supporting agent or binder.
Other features and advantages of the invention follow from the following description and which relates to an embodiment given by way of example, and read with reference to the accompanying drawings in which;
FIG. 1 is a diagram showing by a series of rectangles connected to each other and designated by reference numbers the succession of the operating phases of the process.
Figure 2 is a partially schematic perspective view of an apparatus usable for the preparation of films or thin layers formed from one or the other of the constituents of the mass forming the composite body.
In accordance with this particular embodiment of the object of the invention, it is assumed that one wishes to prepare a relatively simple composite body such as a mass of a single material provided with a thin outer covering of an automobile. material. When it is desired to obtain by this means, a thin outer coating formed of a single material, it is most often the conductive molybdenum disilicide and it is assumed here, in the example in question, that this is indeed the case.
As shown in the diagram which constitutes FIG. 1, one begins by preparing the molybdenum disilicide. For example, molybdenum powder supplied by a source 10 can be intimately mixed with silicon powder supplied by a sounce 11, the mixing being carried out in a ball mill 12. The degree of purity of the powder of molydbene is

crushes at the location represented by rectangle 14, after which it is subjected to further grinding in a ball mill 15 to further reduce its particle size.
At this stage of the process, it is possible to incorporate into the material other materials arriving from a source designated by rectangle 16 and having the role of modifying the character of the final coating, thus allowing additional material to be added. copper to improve thermal shock characteristics and facilitate subsequent application of an electroplating coating. or soldering. A suspension is then prepared using equal parts by weight of the finely ground molybdenum disilicide and a solution from a source represented by the side rectangle 17 and formed of cellulose aceto-butyrate in ethyl bichloride. - lene containing 5% by weight of solid matter.
This suspension is produced in a ball mill represented by the rectangle 18; it is deaerated in 19 before serving.
A thin web of the suspension in question is then produced as shown at 20 by laying it on a suitable support such as a glass plate. An apparatus usable for this purpose is shown in Figure 2 and is described in detail below. The deposit is allowed to dry as shown in 21, which gives rise to a thin, flexible dry film formed mainly of molybdenum disilicide and a small proportion of the binder.
This film can be easily cut or stamped, or even embossed to take the necessary shape.
If, for example, it is a question of preparing a cylinder of insulating material provided with a surface coating of disilicide, the process described in Belgian patent no. 528334 already cited in the preamble to the present text can be used. Thus, a cylinder of suitable dimensions can be prepared by compacting under pressure at the location shown at 22 commercial grade lumina from a source designated 23 and having a particulate fineness allowing it to pass through an English No. 300 mesh screen. Alumina commonly found in commerce such as that sold by the English Company called: MORGAN CRUCIBLE COM- PANY LIMITED and called "MORGAN Triangle R" is suitable. here: This material has a sintering temperature approximately equal to 1750 C.
Pure alumina itself has a sintering temperature of between 2000 and 2050 C. approximately. If this material is actually used, the sintering temperature can be significantly lowered by an addition of about 3% silica or magnesia.
To give rise to the body or to the composite part at the place shown by 24 in Figure 1, a strip of the film in question is cut to allow it to fit the wall of a cylinder, and by allowing for the shrinkage which occurs during sintering. The cylinder thus dressed in this film is placed in a graphite mold and heated in the sintering pad as shown in 25. The pressure exerted on the cylinder is increased as described in section 25. prior French patent which has already been mentioned as the sintering temperature is approached. Once the sintering has been obtained, the cylinder is removed and it is cooled.
It can be seen that it consists of an alumina core surrounded by a coating intimately bonded to it and formed of molybdenum disilicide.
An apparatus suitable for the preparation of the thin film of the material in question is shown in FIG. 2. As can be seen, this apparatus comprises a base 30 to which are fixed, on the one hand, a removable end plate. 31 and, on the other hand, another end plate 32, which can be immobilized in the chosen position using a knurled screw 33.
<Desc / Clms Page number 3>
By virtue of these two end plates 31 and 32, one can easily place a glass plate 34 on the base 30 and hold it in position in order to provide a suitable surface on which the deposition can be effected. deposit is constituted by a certain quantity of the suspension of molybdenum disilicide located in a hopper 35 provided with an adjustable gate 36 held by screws 37 and subjected to an upward stress from a spring 38, so as to bear against set screws 39. A narrow orifice of clearly defined dimensions is thus made at the base of the wall of the hopper 35, so that when this hopper is moved over the glass plate 34 a film of corresponding material is deposited.
The hopper 35 is moved by means of a pull rod 41 fixed to it by a screw 42. This rod 41 moves in a sleeve 43 with universal mounting and is pulled by a cable 44 winding on a reel 45 driven by a small motor (not shown). If this motor rotates at a uniform speed, the thickness of the deposit obtained is also uniform.
It will be understood that the foregoing description has been given merely by way of example and that the invention is applicable to bodies or parts having other shapes and to other compositions of matter @ in paafticulfer as from localized surfaces of conductive material can be applied to an insulating part in the art of producing what are commonly referred to as "printed circuits".
Likewise, as an alternative to producing a solid film of material which is applied to the part to which it is to be sintered, it is also possible in some cases to apply the suspension directly. like a paint hedge or a whitewash, against the surface of the room.
The details of realization can be modified, without departing from the invention, in the field of technical equivalences.
