The invention relates to a discharge tube comprising a cathode activated by alkaline earth metal compounds, the surface of the control electrode and / or the anode of which is of a material which counteracts the emission. primary by the activating material precipitated on these electrodes.
In discharge tubes designed for UHF and centimeter waves, the distances between the electrodes are generally very small. In addition, the current density being generally quite high, these electrodes are brought to a rather high temperature and it is often not possible to make sufficient provisions to ensure good cooling, especially for the grate. As a result, the activating material of the cathode carries some electrodes to unwanted emission.
When, in the present specification, reference is made to cathodes activated with the aid of compounds of alkaline earth metals, this is understood to mean both the usual oxide cathodes in which an alkaline oxide layer -terreux is applied to a support, that the so-called resist cathodes in which the compounds of aloalino-earth metals are in or behind a porous metallic body. Due to their very high temperature, the latter cathodes cause a large transport of activating material to the non-emitting electrodes.
It is known to counteract the gate emission or the anode emission by the use of gold. However, this metal is quite volatile and moreover, very expensive.
The invention provides a material which greatly inhibits unwanted emission and which, moreover, has serious advantages in terms of manufacture and price.
In a discharge tube having a cathode activated with alkaline earth metal compounds and the surface of the control electrode and / or anode of which is of a material which counteracts the primary emission. re by the precipitated activation material, according to the invention, the surface layer comprises by volume at least 90% titanium.
In the case of a grid, annealed titanium wire can be used; this wire avoids all the additional finishing of the grill and lends itself well to the winding of the grilleso However, it is also possible to use a tungsten or molybdenum wire covered with a titanium layer of at least 10 microns This covering can be carried out by a normal electrolytic process, as mentioned for example in "Transactions of the Electrochemical Society" 93, 271-285, 1948.
Titanium can contain up to 10% by volume of tungsten, molybdenum or rhenium.
The results of a tube according to the invention can still be significantly improved by ensuring that the surface of the titanium-coated electrode is clean and polished. This can be achieved by drawing the grid wire, either in the solid form, or in the alloy form, or in the coated form, in a non-corrosive atmosphere, for example a rare gas atmosphere.
The description of the appended drawing, given by way of non-limiting example, will make it clear how the invention can be carried out, the particularities which emerge both from the text and from the drawing being, of course, part of the invention. .
For a usual high-frequency trio, comprising a cathode with

resist of the impregnated type as described in Belgian Patent No. 517,981, tests were carried out with a number of grid materials. Between the cathode and the anode a pulsating voltage with a maximum value of 600 volts, a pulse duration of 100 µsec, and a relative charge duration of 0.006 was applied. The grid emission at the various temperatures of the grill is shown in the table below.
