<Desc/Clms Page number 2>
Une échancrure 34 est formée dans chaque face en un endroit cen- tral de manière à former un passage qui communique avec un trou 35 prévu dans la plaque supérieure 14.Une barre de broyage 36 est fixée en travers de chaque face et comporte une embase destinée à s'emboîter sous la face cen- trale;
<Desc/Clms Page number 3>

The present invention relates to pneumatic backfilling machines of the type in which the materials to be backfilled are fed into pockets formed in a rotor which can rotate in a housing, these materials then being discharged from these pockets by a current of air. and directed into a distribution conduit through which these materials are transported to a place where they are deposited.
The invention is particularly applicable to pneumatic backfilling machines intended for use in coal mines where the space resulting from the removal of coal is to be filled with earthed blockages, such as stones. Pneumatic backfill is described in Belgian Patent No. 477,809.
It is known that there is a limit to the size of the particles which can be successfully carried by an air stream in a pipeline and that this size should not exceed about half of the diameter of the pipeline. It is, therefore, necessary to prepare the material to be backfilled or piled, before it is fed to the backfill machine; this was usually done by passing the material over a sieve, the oversized material retained on the sieve being reduced by grinding. It will be understood that the provision of a sieving and grinding plant greatly increases the cost of the sieve. 'backfill installation; in addition, the screen and the mill occupy a large space. An object of the present invention is to avoid these drawbacks.
According to the present invention, a pneumatic backfill machine of the type indicated is characterized in that the rotor and the housing are shaped so as to grind the material before it enters the distribution or delivery duct.
In the case where the casing has openings communicating respectively with the supply means and with a distribution duct having a circular cross section, the size and the shape of the pockets of the rotor are chosen so that all particles of the materials, having transverse dimensions greater than about half the diameter of the distribution duct, penetrate only partially into the pockets, and so that the protruding portions are thus subjected to a shear between the edges of the pockets and those of these openings.
The opening through which the material is fed to the pockets is provided on at least one of its sides with a strong grinding bar, against which the material to be grinded is force-fed by the rotation of the rotor.
The other opening of the housing can also be provided with one or more grinding bars.
The operating face of the grinding bars may be substantially radial with respect to the axis of rotation of the rotor.
Said operative face may) be provided with projections; the protrusions may, for example, take the form of serrations which extend in a direction away from the axis of rotation.
In the case where the opening is provided with grinding bars, on its opposite sides the protrusions of the bars can be arranged in a quadrangle.
Likewise, the faces of the pockets of the rotor which are perpendicular to the direction of rotation are provided with projections which may also be in the form of serrations which are arranged, in the direction of the length, in a direction away from the axis. of rotation. the protrusions provided on opposite sides of each partition wall provided between the adjacent pockets may be staggered.
<Desc / Clms Page number 2>
In the event that staggered protrusions are provided on the opposite sides of the opening as well as on the opposite sides of the pockets, they are arranged so that during part of the rotation of the rotor the projections of the pockets are in alignment with those provided on the grinding bars, and that, during another part of the rotation, they are not in alignment.
Hereinafter is given a more detailed description of an embodiment of a pneumatic backfill machine, provided with: crushers according to the invention, this description being given with reference to the accompanying drawings.
Figure 1 is a side elevational view, partially in section, of the apparatus.
Figure 2 is a section on line 2-2 of Figure 1.
Figure 3 is the plan view of the arrangement shown in Figure 1.
The apparatus comprises a hollow platform 10 on which is mounted a compressed air motor or an electric motor 11 which drives the backfill mechanism through a gearbox, 12 and a coupling 25. as will be seen in figure 2, the backfilling machine comprises two housing parts 13, the position of which can be adjusted, in the direction of one another, between the upper and lower plates 14 and 15, in a known manner. , by means of jacks 16 mounted on suitable supports 17. A suitable hopper or funnel 45 comprising a partition 46 is fixed to the upper wall 14.
Attached to end members 18 are closure plates 19 in which are mounted bush supports 20. Bushing elements 21 and 22 provided in these brackets respectively support a journal portion 23 of a driven shaft 24. by the gearbox 12, and one end 26 of a hollow rotor 27 which is wedged on another part of the shaft 24.
As will be seen better in Figure 2, the rotor has a number of evenly spaced apart pockets 28, the bottom of which is arcuate in the direction of the axis of rotation, as can be seen in Figure 1.
The partitions 29 provided between the pockets having serrations 30 and 31 on their opposite faces, the length of these serrations being arranged in a direction away from the axis of rotation of the rotor. The two sets of serrations 30 and 31 are arranged in staggered.
As best seen in Figure 2, the two housing parts 13 are arranged to form between them spaces 32 and 33 respectively at the top and at the bottom of the device.
The faces of the housing portions 13 flanking the rear opening 32 are staggered and inclined as indicated at 34 so that the size of the opening increases with distance from the rotor.
A notch 34 is formed in each face at a central location so as to form a passage which communicates with a hole 35 provided in the top plate 14. A grinding bar 36 is fixed across each face and has a base for it. to fit under the central face;
this bar is fixed to this face by suitable screws. The faces, facing inward, of the grinding bar are serrated as shown at 37 and 38 and are substantially radial with respect to the axis of rotation The serrations provided on the opposite faces of the opening are staggered and are arranged such that during part of the rotation of the rotor the serrations of the pockets of the rotor are provided.
<Desc / Clms Page number 3>
in correspondence or in alignment with the serrations 38 of the grinding bar, while the serrations 31 are in alignment with the serrations
37, while during another part of the rotation of the rotor, the other teeth of the rotor and the bars are not in correspondence.
the faces of the opening 33 are hollowed out to receive the bar 47 which can have a flat face. As the rotor and the grinding bars must withstand significant forces and be resistant to wear, the rotor will preferably be made of cast iron, and bars of manganese steel or other hard alloy.
As is known, the base 10 has a compressed air intake duct 39 which directs high velocity air through one end of each pocket as it passes rapidly through it, in order to maintain control. dragging the material to pass in the distribution duct 40 which extends in the base 10 and is provided with a flange 41 intended to allow its connection to a pipe which distributes the material to the chosen destination.
The intake duct 39 is also provided with a flange 42 seen from the connection to a duct 43 leading to a source of compressed air.
The rotor 27 is provided, at each end, with a suitable end seal 44 disposed between it and the square end part 18 of the housing.
As previously stated, it has been found that in order to have an efficient transfer of material into the distribution line the cross-sectional dimensions of the material particles should not be greater than about half the diameter of the distribution line. pipeline; in order to ensure this condition, the pockets 28 are shaped and dimensioned so that parts having transverse dimensions greater than those indicated above cannot fully enter the pockets. In this way, any protruding parts of the pockets particles will be brought against one or the other of the serrated grinding bars 30, 31 depending on the direction of rotation of the rotor.
