Suivant l'inventions la distribution, qui comprend un organe distributeur tournant à l'intérieur d'un siège et relativement à celui-ci;, siège qui est muni d'ouvertures pour la communication avec le cylindre et d' ouvertures pour l'alimentation et l'échappement, est caractérisée par le fait que l'organe distributeur est accouplé à un organe d'entraînement qui a une position axiale déterminée par rapport au siège, grâce à un accouplement hélicoïdal, c'est-à-dire à vis, et grâce à un ressort de torsion ou autre joint élastique qui, grâce à sa déformation élastique, transmet le couple nécessaire à la rotation de l'organe distributeur relativement à son siège;

Un appendice en godet-19- de l'organe -16- entoure le renflement -20- de l'arbre -9- ; on a prévu un accouplement hélicoïdal de cet organe -16- avec l'arbre -9-, accouplement constitué par un filetage, même à plusieurs filets et à pas rapide, taillé sur le renflement central -20- de l'arbre -9- et intérieurement sur l'appendice -19-; dans l'arbre -9- se fixe une cheville -22- qui pénètre dans un logement-23- creusé dans lhppendice en godet -19- de l'organe -16-, pour limiter les déplacements angulaires relatifs entre l'arbre -9- constituant l'organe d'entraînement, et l'organe -16-;
<Desc/Clms Page number 3>
Suivant les fig. 5 et 6, l'arbre -9- ne présente pas l'appendice -9a-, et il est percé axialement pour loger une barre de torsion -40-, qui est ancrée en -41- sur l'arbre -9- et qui s'étend à l'intérieur d'une perforation axiale de l'organe -16-;
<Desc/Clms Page number 4>
<Desc/Clms Page number 5>
REVENDICATIONS.
1.- Distribution rotative comprenant au moins un organe distributeur tournant relativement à un siège pourvu d'un orifice de communica- tion avec au moins un cylindre correspondant et d'alimentation et d'échappement, cette distribution étant caractérisée par le fait qu'elle comprend; un organe d'entrainement qui a une position axiale déterminée par rapport au siège; un accouplement hélicoïdale c'est-à-dire à vis, entre l'organe d'entraînement et l'organe distributeur; un ressort de torsion ou autre joint élastique qui réagit entre l'organe d'entraînement et l'organe distributeur;

The invention relates to rotary distributions for the supply and exhaust of cylinders of heat engines, of compressorsp of pumps and other machines comprising chambers of cyclically variable volume, of the type of those which comprise a rotary member by relative to a suitable seat, both being, for example and more especially, conical.
In this kind of distributions, the tightness must be maintained even at the high pressures which appear cyclically in the cylinder, while the specific pressure between the cooperating and moving surfaces of the rotary member and the seat must be contained between appropriate limits, although the components during operation are also thermally stressed and subject to variations in the coefficient of friction.
The object of the invention is a rotary distribution which avoids disturbances by maintaining the specific pressure within fixed and adjustable limits and in addition it also offers the possibility of unloading on the support members the cyclically variable axial forces which are due to the action of the pressure prevailing in the cylinder on the rotary member, without compromising the operation of the assembly.
According to the invention the distribution, which comprises a distributor member rotating inside a seat and relative to the latter ;, seat which is provided with openings for communication with the cylinder and openings for the supply and the exhaust, is characterized in that the distributor member is coupled to a drive member which has a determined axial position with respect to the seat, thanks to a helical coupling, that is to say screw, and thanks to a torsion spring or other elastic joint which, thanks to its elastic deformation, transmits the torque necessary for the rotation of the distributor member relative to its seat;
the action of the torsion-effect spring, or other resilient member, tends to rotate the distributor member relative to the drive member in the desired direction so that this distributor member approaches its seat, while the friction which appears between the distributor member and its seat is in opposition to the action of the spring and therefore tends to rotate the distributor member in the desired direction so that it is detached from its seat The play of these two actions antagonists between them creates a balance which maintains practically constant automatically, the contact friction between the rotating part and the fixed part, even when, for accidental reasons - due either to thermal stresses or to any other cause - this friction would have tendency to increase.
When., For whatever reasons, the friction tends to increase, there is an increase in the torque necessary for the drives and therefore an increase in the deformation of the elastic member, which causes a slight angular displacement between the two members and consequently also - thanks to the helical coupling - an axial displacement which tends to detach the distributor member from its seat until the friction returns to the predetermined value.
According to a practical and preferable embodiment, the distributor member is made in the form of a frustoconical member accommodated in a conical seat and coupled to the drive member by a screw coupling and by a torsion spring, or similar elastic seal. .
The system operates, either when the distributor member, \ 1 driven by the drive member, rotates relative to the fixed seat, or when the seat rotates and the drive member remains fixed., The latter having for role in this case to prevent the rotation of the distributor member which tends to be driven by the rotating seat, because of friction.

According to figs. 1 to 4, the cylinder -1- is surmounted by a block -2- in which the seat of the spark plug-3- is provided, which opens out inside the cylinder head -4-; this block-2- has a cavity passing right through, perpendicular to the axis of the cylinder, which forms a frustoconical seat -6-, in front of which open a passage -7- starting from the cylinder head -4- of the cylinder -1-, as well as passages -8-8a-arranged on either side of passage -7- (see fig. 2), and constituting the exhaust and intake ports.
In the cavity forming the conical seat -6- passes a shaft-9- mounted on a bearing -10-; this shaft-9- is coupled, by a key -11-, to a tightened core -12-, at the same time as the inner ring of the bearing -10-, against a shoulder of the shaft -9-, by a nut -13-. In the core -12- is housed radially an elastic peg -14- provided with a tooth which can engage in one of the two diametrically opposed triangular hollows -15a- formed inside an annular appendage of a toothed wheel -15- engaged between the core -12- and the bearing -10-, and idle with respect to these; this toothed wheel -15- is rotated from the motor shaft, with a ratio which is 4: 1 in the example.
The layout is roughly analogous to a freewheeling device.
The shaft -9- has a bulge -20- roughly in the center of the cavity made in the block -2-, and this bulge is extended by a section -9a- of the shaft -9-, of smaller diameter , which extends in front of the conical seat -6-. In this conical seat is housed the conical distributor member -16- which surrounds the section -9a- of the shaft -9- and is provided with two hollow -17-18-, which, in the rotation of the conical member -16-, successively establish communication between the orifice -7- and the -8-8a- orifices, one exhaust and the other intake. The two hollows communicate through a hole to achieve radial balancing.
A cup-shaped appendage-19- of the member -16- surrounds the bulge -20- of the shaft -9-; a helical coupling is provided for this member -16- with the shaft -9-, coupling consisting of a thread, even with several threads and with rapid pitch, cut on the central bulge -20- of the shaft -9- and internally on the appendix -19-; in the shaft -9- an anchor -22- is fixed which penetrates into a housing-23- dug in the bucket appendix -19- of the member -16-, to limit the relative angular displacements between the shaft -9 - constituting the drive member, and the -16- member;
this housing -23- extends helically following the course of the threads of the helical coupling (see also fig. 4). At the end of the section -9a- of the shaft -9- is fixed, in the example by a screw -27-, a collar -28- to which is fixed the end -29a- of a spring coil -29- whose end -29b- is fixed to the conical member -16-; this spring-29- constitutes the torsion spring which connects the drive member
<Desc / Clms Page number 3>
-9-9a- to 1, 'distributor member -16-, and it is made to generate a torque whose axis coincides with that of the distributor.
The movement of the central shaft of the machine is transmitted by the wheel -15- and the freewheel device -14- -15a-, to the shaft -9-, and from the latter, thanks to the spring -29- , to the distributor unit -16-; depending on the effort required to drive the member -16- overcoming the friction between it and the seat $ the spring -29- deforms more or less, determining relative angular displacements between the shaft -9- , -9a- and organ-16; these two members being helically coupled, the relative angular displacements between them are transformed into axial displacements of the member -16- relative to the shaft -9-, and therefore relative to the conical seat -6-.
Given the direction of the thread, when the torque necessary to drive the member -16- increases, so when the friction increases, there is a greater deformation of the spring -29-, and consequently a relative angular displacement between the two organs; thus, the member -16- undergoes an axial displacement which tends to detach it from the seat -6 by reducing the friction until thus automatically reducing the deformation of the spring -29- to a practically normal value., thus maintaining the balance . In fact, while the spring-29- tends to unscrew and consequently to bring the conical element -16- closer to the seat-6-, the friction which arises from the coupling of this member with its seat, against the action of the spring tends to screw the conical element, and therefore to detach it from its seat.
The cyclically variable axial forces (due to the effect of the pressure prevailing in the cylinder on the distributor member) are transferred via the helical coupling to the drive member -9 without altering the automatic adjustment of the friction .
The angular position of the shaft -9- relative to the central shaft of the machine., And consequently the phasing of the distribution is ensured by the presence of two hollows only, -15a- which cooperate with the ankle -14-; any accidental rotation, in the opposite direction to the normal direction that the machine shaft can take, is not transmitted to the shaft -9-, and thus the blocking of the component-16- in the seat is avoided - 6-.
The spring -29- is initially tensioned by rotating the collar -28- and locking it on the shaft -9- with the clamping screw -27-; 1 'conical distributor member -16- is held by the pin -22-, which stops the rotation of this member by cooperating with the bottom of the housing -23-, and thus facilitating assembly; ankle -22-, in normal operation in equilibrium., is in an intermediate position in the housing -23-.
The initial load given to the torsion spring regulates the value of the friction between the member -16- and its seat; by varying it, we can vary the specific pressure between the two surfaces in relative movement
According to fig. 5 and 6, the shaft -9- does not have the appendix -9a-, and it is axially drilled to accommodate a torsion bar -40-, which is anchored at -41- on the shaft -9- and which extends inside an axial perforation of the member -16-;
this has a projecting annular edge -42- provided with two notches -43- diametrically opposed, in which is housed a cross-member -44- which is placed on the end of the bar -40- and fixed to it by means for example of a tightening screw-45 The torsion bar -40-loaded beforehand, replaces the torsion spring - 29- of the previous example; the crosspiece -44- rotates the member -16- which can slide relative to this crosspiece; the elastic torsional deformations of the bar-40- determine the relative angular displacements between the shaft -9- and the member -16-.
In the example of figs 7 and 8, a central rotary distribution such as that described is applied to a compressor which comprises a rotating block carrying the cylinders arranged in a star. In the casing -50- rotates, integrally with the shaft -51-, a disc -52- which carries on its periphery axes -53- for the connecting rods -54- of the pistons -55-; these pistons
<Desc / Clms Page number 4>
are housed so as to be able to slide in cylinders -56- which are part of a block -57-; this block is provided with an appendage -58- sleeve, mounted in a bearing -59- which is housed in a tubular support -60- secured to the casing -50-.
The block -57- can rotate on the bearing -59 following a parallel geometric axis but offset with respect to the geometric axis of the shaft-51-; the block-57- is driven by the motor shaft -51-, and the pistons -55-, by the eccentricity of the axes of rotation, slide cyclically along the cylinders -56-. Inside the sleeve -58- extends a fixed and rigid duct -61- which is extended by a shaft -62-, on which is placed a conical distributor member -63- which is housed in a corresponding conical seat provided in the turntable -57-; in this seat open passages which start from the cylinders.
The distributor member-63- is connected to an element in a determined axial position, constituted by the element -61-62-, by means of a helical coupling -64- with rapid pitch and a torsion spring-65 - which reacts between the member -63et a ring-66- fixed to the end of the shaft -62-, once the spring -65- has been loaded. In the conical distributor member-63- is formed an opening -67- which extends over an arc a little less than 180, through which the suction of the fluid which arrives at this opening-67- from the manifold -68- and the gap -69-; a second opening -70- allows the escape of the fluid compressed by the cylinders, in the conduit -61-.
In this example, the distributor member -63- is more or less fixed, and the conical seat, provided in the block -57-, rotates relative to this member; the automatic adjustment is however done in a similar way to the previous one, since the spring is deformed because of the torque necessary to overcome the friction between the seat and the member -63-, torque which would tend to cause the member -63- him -even.
Following the example of figs. 9 to 11, a second automatic adjustment device is provided, by which the relative rotational movement of the distributor member with respect to its seat is transmitted; this second automatic adjustment device comes into operation when the adjustment helical coupling is not effective or sufficient, and it allows the conical member to be lifted even to a considerable extent.
In the cylinder head -71-, in addition to the chamber-72-, a cavity extending right through -73- and comprising the conical seat for the conical member -74- has been made. On bearings -75-76-, is mounted the shaft -77 which is driven in rotation, by means of the elastic peg -78- acting as a freewheel, by a toothed wheel -79- which takes the movement on the motor shaft.
The shaft -77- forms a bulge -80 against which there is a disc or plate -81-, integral with a sleeve -82- which surrounds the thinnest section of the shaft -77- and extends to the 'inside the axial hole of the conical member -74-; the end of the sleeve-82est toothed and coupled to the analogous end of a second sleeve -83-, also surrounding the shaft -77- and secured to a bulge -84-; in this bulge, we cut a thread coupled to the thread cut in the member -74-.
The bulge -84- has a notch -85- in the form of a sector, through which passes an ankle -86- fixed to the member -74-; to the ankle -86- and to the part -84- are anchored the ends of a spiral spring -87- which constitutes the torsion spring made to drive the conical member -74- and to determine relative angular displacements between the bulge -84- and the member -74-, when there is variation in the torque necessary to drive the member -74- in rotation.
On the shaft -77-, there is provided a shoulder -88-, constituted for example by a nut and a counter-nut so that it is adjustable in position, and against this shoulder a spring -89- is supported which tends to push the components -84- -83- and -82- to the right when looking at the drawing, and tends to bring the disc -81- and the bulge closer together

-80-. The disc -81- as well as the bulge -80- have on their faces facing each other corresponding hollows -91-, cut in a V, between which are interposed balls -92- which constitute the rolling elements . The spring -89- therefore pushes the disc-81- against the balls -92-e and the latter against the bulge -80-, which has an invariable axial position.
Under normal conditions, the action of the spring-89- is such as to prevent relative angular displacements between the shaft-77- and the disc -81-; therefore; the rotational movement, which is transmitted from the wheel -79-, to the shaft -77-, is transmitted in turn by the latter to the sleeves -82- 83- and from 1à to the conical member -74 -, thanks to the spring -87-.
When, for whatever reason, the adjustment due to the helical coupling between components -84- and -74- does not work sufficiently, and when the torque required for the rotation of the component -74- increases, the component axial force, transmitted through the balls -92-, exceeds the action of the spring -89-, and this determines a relative rotation between the bulge -80- and the disc -81-, with a bearing balls -92- on the inclined surfaces of the recesses -91-; thus there is an axial sliding of all the members -82-83- and -74-, to the left when looking at the drawing with compression of the spring -89-.
This second automatic adjustment device allows greater operating safety, and also makes it possible to have a low pitch helical coupling between the members -84- and -74-, and not to rapid pitch; this may be preferable in order to obtain smooth operation of the first automatic adjustment device.
The dissin shows only schematic examples of the invention, which may vary in its forms and arrangements. For example, if we consider Figs. 9 to 11, one could have provided rolling rollers mounted on one of the members, such as the bulge -80- and rolling on inclined surfaces, for example V-shaped, of the flange -81-.
CLAIMS.
1.- Rotary distribution comprising at least one distributor member rotating relative to a seat provided with an orifice for communication with at least one corresponding cylinder and supply and exhaust, this distribution being characterized in that it includes; a drive member which has a determined axial position relative to the seat; a helical, that is to say screw, coupling between the drive member and the distributor member; a torsion spring or other resilient seal which reacts between the drive member and the distributor member;
the helical coupling between the two members being such that the relative angular displacements due to a greater deformation of the torsion spring or similar joint as a result of the increase in friction between the distributor member and the seat, determine axial displacements of the distributor member, tending to lift it from its seat until the friction is reduced to its normal value.
