<Desc/Clms Page number 3>

IMPROVEMENTS TO THE JOINTS WITH INSET.
The invention relates to improvements to interlocking joints and its object is to provide an improved means of assembling the parts of the joint.
According to the invention, a male and female interlocking joint comprises a split elastic ring, a female dagger whose internal wall has an annular groove in which the split ring can be fully housed, a male ring whose external wall has a groove circumferential intended to match the groove of the female ring when the two rings are assembled and a device for contracting the split elastic ring so that it partially protrudes out of the groove of the female ring into the groove of the male ring in order to lock the two rings together.
In order to better understand the invention, reference will be made to the appended drawings which show, by way of example, a preferred embodiment for the end-to-vout assembly of two hollow cylinders or tubes, and in which: FIGS. 1 and 2 are sections of the ends of the two cylinders provided respectively with a male ring and a corresponding female ring; Figure 3 is a sectional view of the male and female rings of Figures 1 and 2 nested and locked together; Figure 4 is a sectional view of the interlocking joint taken along line IV-IV of Figure 3, and
Figures 5 and 6 are sectional views of part of the snap-in seal.

limp which show a variant of the locking ring, respectively in the unlocked position and in the locked position.
In Figures 1 to 4, the seal comprises two machined rings 10 and 11 which can be made of light alloy and which are fixed by screws 12 to the ends of the cylinders 13 and 14 to be assembled, the rings 10 and 11 respectively constituting a male element and a female element which can be assembled as shown in Figure 3.
The female ring 11 has in its internal wall a groove 15 little spaced from the outer end while the male ring 10 has in its outer wall a circumferential groove 16 which is intended to correspond to the groove 15 of the female ring when both rings are suitably nested. The groove 15 of the female ring has a depth such that a split ring 17 of spring steel, such as for example a piston ring, can be fully seated therein and easily when it is not compressed, the ring 17 rests in the bottom of the groove 15 and does not prevent the introduction or removal of the male ring 10.
The groove 16 in this ring 10 is shallower than its counterpart in the ring 11 and it is intended to receive the inner part of the split ring 17 when the latter is compressed and contracted so as to protrude out of the groove 15 of the ring 11. When it is thus contracted, the split ring 17 is housed partly in the groove 15 and partly in the groove 16 as shown in FIG. 3 and thus prevents any relative displacement of the rings 10, 11, in particular in the direction of the longitudinal axis of the cylinders.
In the preferred embodiment, one face of the split ring 17 is chamfered as shown at 18 and a corresponding chamfer is provided on the side 19 of the groove 16 of the male ring 10. The chamfered surfaces 18 and 19 cooperate to produce a wedge effect obtained when the split ring 17 is contracted and protrudes into the groove 16 of the ring 10. The wedge effect not only firmly wedges the two rings 10 and 11 but it also results in to force the male ring 10 fully into the female ring 11 and it further prevents the split ring 17 from remaining wedged when the seal is released.
In the form shown in Figures 1 to 4, the compression and contraction of the split ring 17 are obtained by means of a number of grub screws 21 distributed around the ring 11 as shown in Figure 4 and screwed into radial holes in the wall thereof.
When the screws 21 are screwed deeper into the ring 11 so that they abut against the split ring 17, they compress it radially in the wedge groove 16 of the assembly ring 10 and rigidly block the two rings together. The seal is released by unscrewing the grub screws 21, thus allowing the split ring 17 to expand and to fully enter the groove 15 of the ring 11 thanks to its elasticity. The grub screws 21 are preferably made captive so that they cannot be unscrewed beyond a predetermined limit and at least to the position shown in Figure 2.
In order to prevent the two rings 10 and 11 from rotating relative to each other while allowing the transmission of a torque from one to the other, the female ring 11 is provided with lugs 22 directed towards the inside which are arranged so as to penetrate into notches 23 made in the outer edge of the male ring 10.
In a variant of the invention shown in Figures 5 and 6, the split ring instead of being intended simply to contract and expand in the manner already described, is a split ring susceptible to warping 25, whose normal shape is essentially cylindrical. In Fig. 5, split ring 25 is shown seated flat in a specially shaped groove 26, recessed in female ring 11, with split ring 25 lying entirely in the groove so that the base
<Desc / Clms Page number 3>
female gue and the male ring are free to slide relative to each other. Figure 6 shows the split ring 25 warped partly out of the groove 26 of the female ring 11 and entering a groove of special profile made in the male ring 10.
The warping of the ring 25 is obtained by tightening the grub screws 21 which, in this variant, are intended to bear on the ring near one of its edges. The compression of the split ring 25 by the grub screws causes it to warp around the part 28 of the male ring 10 until it assumes the position shown in figure 6. Giving the face 29 of the split ring 25 and the face 31 of the groove 27 at an appropriate angle, the warping of the split ring 25, in addition to the blocking of the two rings, exerts on them a traction to bring them together and when loosening the bis headless 21, the split ring 25 returns to the position it occupies in the figure
5.
In the two embodiments described above, the seal offers the advantage of being light, of exerting an equally distributed load and of ensuring a rigid connection between the respective parts.
