<Desc/Clms Page number 2>
<Desc/Clms Page number 3>

GUIDANCE AND CURRENT DELIVERY NOZZLE FOR A WELDING ELECTRODE WIRE.
The present invention relates to a guide and current supply nozzle for a welding electrode wire and its aim is to provide a device having a longer useful life than the nozzles of the solid type ,,, by means of parts. Wear inserts which can be replaced easily and inexpensively and are able to provide the metal rod constituting the welding electrode with current densities as great or greater than can be done by said solid type nozzle.
Another object is the production of a nozzle of this kind which is less bulky than the so-called U-block type, and allows its convenient use in re-entrant angles or other places not accessible to the U-block type.
The current models of electrode holder used for arc welding in granular flux and for other welding processes in which the weld is protected from the air are usually of two types o In one of them, the rod of filler metal is discharged through a solid type nozzle. A nozzle of this type has the advantage of giving maximum accessibility to the workpiece, but it has the drawback of having a short useful life because of wear. which forces the nozzle to be discarded after a relatively small number of working hours.
The other type., Or U-guide has heavy blocks of conductive metals and can transmit maximum current to the electrode wire, but it is bulky and does not lend itself to use when the wire must go through nip angles.
The need has long existed for a welding nozzle which would eliminate the disadvantages of each of these types and at the same time retain their advantages. The present invention meets this need.
The nozzle according to the invention is established for suitable current densities by providing a pair of manganese bronze jaws.
<Desc / Clms Page number 2>
cantilevered and which tighten between them, elastically ,,, an electrode wire.
Small beryllium copper inserts are interposed between the jaws and the electrode wire and each of these parts is shaped so as to initially clamp the electrode along two contact lines which widen with wear. The attachments are. preferably .. slightly conical so that the clamping force exerted by the jaws is more uniform over the entire length of each of the contact pieces or wipers.
If we refer to the drawing. Figure 1 is a longitudinal section of a preferred embodiment of the present invention. Figure 2 is a view which corresponds to Figure 1 but which shows an electrode wire clamped in position. Figure 3 is a section on line 3-3 of Figure 1. Figure 4 is a section on line 4-4 of Figure 2. Figure 5 is a view.!) With cutaway parts of contact shown in the previous figures of the drawing.
The tube 10 is made of manganese bronze and it is provided with a central bore 11 provided for the passage of the electrode wire 12. A tubular conductor 13 is screwed into the tube 10 and the welding current for the wire 12 is supplied. by the conductor 13. The rear end 'of the tube 10 is slightly conical at 14, around the bore to facilitate the entry of the electrode wire into the bore of the tube 10. To make a pair of resilient door arms - cantilever 16 and 17. the tube 10 is split at 15. The slot 15 and the length of the arms 16 and 17 depend on the degree of elastic clamping pressure desired. In practice .. the arms 16 and 17 are about 136 mm long for a 20 cm tube. having an outside diameter of 28.6 mm with a bore of 8 mm in diameter.
To provide conductive and wear resistant contacts, for supplying current to the electrode wire, beryllium copper inserts 18 and 19 are provided in the general shape shown.
To hold these inserts in place against the thrust communicated to them by the moving electrode. ,, these wipers are held in position by the folded collar 21 of a cap nut 20. A nut retaining collar 22 is screwed on the nut 20 and is immobilized on the tube 1: 0-by'des screws 23. These screws also engage in notches 24 made in the external face of the trotters .. in order to prevent an angular displacement of one of these wipers with respect to the other. Each of the wipers has a constriction 25 at its front end and a shoulder 26 against which the collar 21 abuts.
A tube 27 of micarta or other suitable insulating substance surrounds the tube 10 and rests on shoulders provided to receive it in the collar 22 and in a brass washer 28.
The rear end of the contact pieces is chamfered, as shown at 29, to facilitate entry of the electrode wire between these contact pieces. Each of the contact pieces has a V-groove. 300 In the embodiment shown, the V-groove has an angle of 90 at its apex. In this way. the contact between each wiper and the electrode wire takes place initially along the line of tangency between the wire and the sides of the V-shaped groove. a space being left for residues .. such as oxide scales .. etc ... that can fall into it. As wear occurs this line of contact widens.
Since the clamping pressure exerted by the cantilever arms would be maximum at the rear end of these contact pieces assuming them of uniform thickness; and since it is desirable that the contact between the electrode wire and the nozzle occurs near the weld and in a substantially uniform fashion.
the contact pieces are slightly thinned on their other adjacent faces .. as shown at 31 in FIG. 1a. This thinning of the contact pieces is gradual and longitudinal, and it is only a fraction of a degree, or. !! more exactly about 31 minutes,
to lend themselves to angular displacement of the sides of the slot of the tube 10 after insertion of the rod 120 Figure 1 shows
<Desc / Clms Page number 3>
the approximate magnitude and direction of the thinning given to these inserts o With the filler metal rod in place the thinning is not seen in Figure 2 since its purpose is to distribute the con- longitudinal contact between the wipers and the filler metal rod in a substantially uniform manner
The electrode holder can be sized to accommodate a pair of interchangeable wipers suitable for electrodes of various sizes. It is known that 2% beryllium copper wipers give good contact at the same time as good resistance to wear.
These parts are made from a rod that has been annealed then cut to the indented shape and then hardened to Rock- hardness; well C 32-36. The drawing shows the preferred embodiment substantially to scale.
Among the advantages of the present invention, one can mention the fact that the electrode holder according to the invention has been found to have a useful life about 18 times longer than that of the full nose type by passing from 450 at 700 amps at the electrode. The outer shape and tapered front end of the nozzle allows it to go into narrower places than can be done with the bulky U-block type guide.
Replaceable contact parts have a useful life which has been found to be satisfactory before their wear has become such as to remove substantially all the flat faces of the V-grooves and before the contact parts are marked, or scratched. ,. The use of the cantilevered spring arms gives freedom of lateral movement which may be advantageous in the event that the filler metal rod has not been completely straightened before its introduction into the device of the present invention. case where the rod is slightly curved. ,, so that more flexion occurs in one arm than in the other ,. the arm in which the greatest distortion occurs presses the contact piece against the rod with a pressure greater than the usual pressure.
to make up for the deviation of the other arm from its usual clamping pressure o The flexion of the cantilever arm is that which is caused by the size of the electrode passing through the device o When no electrode is is in place. ,, the arms 16 and 17 are hardly subjected to any force and the front ends of the wipers 18 and 19 are substantially in contact as shown in FIG. 1 before introduction of the filler metal rod 12.
As shown in the drawing, the length to thickness ratio of each cantilever jaw is at least about 5 to increase the elasticity of their clamping effect.
