<Desc/Clms Page number 2>
<Desc/Clms Page number 3>
<Desc/Clms Page number 4>
<Desc/Clms Page number 5>

IMPROVEMENTS TO ANTIFREEZE OR DEFROST DEVICES WITH ELECTRICAL HEATING.
The present invention relates to electrically heated anti-freeze or defrost devices, and it applies especially, though not exclusively, to parts of aircraft on the surface of which frost or accumulation of ice or frost. must be prevented or reduced, and which are lined for this purpose with a layer of electrically insulating material (hereinafter referred to as the inner insulating layer) covered with an electric heating resistor formed by a conductive layer of electricity, usually metallic, applied by spraying, or in foil or otherwise, and itself covered with an outer protective layer of electrically insulating material (hereinafter referred to as outer insulating layer).
According to a method of manufacturing electrically heated anti-freeze or defrost apparatus of the type described in main patent No. 513,611, the inner and outer insulating layers consist of a thermosetting artificial resin or a similar thermosetting plastic material subjected to polymerization after application, while the metallic layer is obtained by spraying metal on the inner insulating layer already polymerized and before application of the outer insulating layer.
One of the difficulties which arise in the manufacture of anti-freeze devices or electrically heated defrosters of this type is the adjustment of the thickness of the inner and outer insulating layers.
This is important not only because a local or generalized excess of thickness over the minimum necessary for insulating and mechanical conditions constitutes excess weight, but also because uneven thickness gives an unacceptable irregular outer surface at the point of
<Desc / Clms Page number 2>
aspect view, and above all, in the case of airplanes, from the aerodynamic point of view. In addition, when it comes to airplanes, it is of the first importance that the required outer contour of the air-swept parts remain unchanged and therefore the thinnest layers compatible with the imposed electrical and mechanical properties must be used.
The object of the present invention is to provide a method of manufacturing anti-freeze or defrost devices of the type described which can be easily applied to surfaces of parts of very different shapes and in many different positions, facilitating the adjustment. the thickness of the insulating layers.
In the method of manufacturing electrically heated antifreeze or defrost devices of the aforementioned type according to the present invention, each of the insulating layers consists of an artificial thermosetting insulating resin or a similar plastic material applied in liquid form and intimately associated with a layer, at least, of canvas serving to limit the thickness of the insulating layer and to prevent the resin from leaking excessively, before polymerization.
Further, in some cases, the liquid thermosetting plastic material can be mixed with a finely divided solid filler entering the interstices of the fabric and also preventing the resin from flowing prior to polymerization, thereby limiting the overall thickness. of the insulating layer.
In most cases, each insulating layer will moreover consist of at least two layers of superimposed fabric applied one after the other.
In one embodiment of the process of the invention, the layers of thermosetting plastic material and the sheet (s) of fabric are all applied separately one after the other, the fabric being applied dry and allowing itself to be impregnated by the preceding and following layers of thermosetting plastic material, It may however be good and desirable, in other cases, to impregnate the or each of the web layers with liquid thermosetting plastic material before application, and one can, in this case, apply all the thermosetting plastic material of the insulating layer in the form of one or more layers of impregnated fabric, or one can apply successively layers of plastic material and layers of impregnated canvas.
When two or more layers of fabric are applied successively each intimately associated with one or more layers of thermosetting plastic material, each coating composed of a layer of fabric and its associated plastic layers can be partially or fully cured before apply the next layer of thermosetting plastic and canvas. Or else the different layers of fabric and thermosetting plastic material constituting an insulating layer can be superimposed in the desired order before polymerization and the entire insulating layer can then be polymerized as a whole.
The type of fabric used can vary, but an interesting form is glass fabric made from woven glass filaments. It will be noted that in any case the fabric must be substantially free of any material forming gases or releasing liquid at the polymerization temperature of the plastic material; therefore, the fabric used will usually be woven of glass filaments, as mentioned above, or of nylon or polyethylene fibers.
If, in the course of manufacture, a filler has been added, or still material to facilitate weaving or for other purposes; it may be necessary to clean or heat the web prior to use in accordance with the present invention in order to prevent the generation of gaseous bubbles on the web during heat polymerization of the plastic.
<Desc / Clms Page number 3>
The method of applying each layer of plastic as well as the form in which the metal is applied and its method of application may vary from case to case, but it is, in general, preferable to deposit the layers of plastic. thermosetting plastic material and metal by spraying, and an embodiment of the invention according to this process is shown by way of example, somewhat schematically, in the accompanying drawings, in its application to a part of the edge of the machine. attack of an airplane wing.
Figures 1, 2, 3, 4, 5 and 6 show part of an airplane wing at different stages of the implementation of the method of the invention, and
Figure 7 is a sectional view, on a large scale, of a part of the airplane wing to which the electric de-icer apparatus is applied in accordance with the invention.
The airplane wing, part of which is shown, consists of the usual outer sheet A supported by the usual internal support and reinforcement parts, one of which is shown at A1. By applying the process of the invention which will now be described, one begins by lightly roughening the part of the surface of the sheet A where the apparatus is to be deposited and then the desired part of the surface of the sheet is covered.
A of a thermosetting plastic material, for example of the type under the trademark "Araldite" and called "Araldite D", by means of a heat gun; this layer, shown at B in FIG. 1 after application and before polymerization, is in the form of a relatively adherent liquid.
A glass cloth C is applied to this layer, which is unrolled and compressed so that it absorbs and is partially impregnated with the layer B in order to adhere to the sheet A, the glass cloth C of the Figure 1 being shown when it is unrolled and placed on the layer B. The plastic layer covered with the glass cloth can then be polymerized either at room temperature leaving the layer at this temperature for the desired time , or by applying heat by radiation.
After polymerization, a second layer of thermosetting plastic material, as in B1 in FIG. 2, is applied to the outer face of the glass fabric C, by spraying, so as to completely impregnate the fabric and, while this layer is still liquid, a second sheet of glass is placed which is unrolled and compressed as shown in FIG. 1, and the second layer of thermosetting plastic is polymerized, at atmospheric temperature or by application of heat, to which the thermosetting plastic firmly adheres. secon- glass cloth.
In the example described, other layers of thermosetting plastic and glass cloth are then applied in a similar way, so as to have, in total, four layers of glass cloth G with one layer of thermosetting plastic material. B on each of their faces, the last layer of glass cloth being covered with a last layer of thermosetting plastic material and subjected to polymerization so that the final outer layer consists of polymerized thermosetting plastic material.
Fig. 2 shows the wing in section at the stage of the process where the application of the last layer of thermosetting plastic material is carried out, After polymerization of this last layer B, electrical terminals are placed in the form of spikes with heads or of screws with heads, in desired places of the layer, with the spikes or screws planted in the insulating layer without touching the sheet A and the upper faces of the terminal heads flush with the outer surface of the plastic layer thermosetting.polymerized exterior; one of these terminals is shown at D in figure 2 and in figure 7.
The following operation consists in applying, on the desired part of the surface, a mask, represented at E in FIG. 3, serving to mask certain parts of the surface of the outer layer of plastic material.
<Desc / Clms Page number 4>
polymerized thermosetting, after which is deposited, by means of a gun, as indicated at F of Figure 3, metal, for example aluminum, on the parts of the surface not covered by the cover E, so that these constitute, in a well-known manner, an electrically conductive heating resistor. It is clear that the metal layer is thus electrically connected, without any other intervention, to the terminals D by simply coating the bare parts of the outer surface.
The cover E is then removed and the metallized surface and the remaining virgin parts of the inner insulating layer are covered with a layer of thermosetting plastic material, as shown at G in Fig. 4, and, during that this is still in the liquid state, a new glass cloth is applied to it, as shown at H in Figure 4. The layer of thermosetting plastic material G, to which the glass cloth adheres, is polymerized - reed, after which another layer G of thermosetting plastic material is applied to the outer face of the glass web, another glass cloth H is placed, and this new layer is polymerized; at this point, the device is in the state shown in Figure 5.
As shown in J in FIG. 6, a last layer of thermosetting plastic is applied and polymerized, the outer surface of the latter being able to be polished by one or another known mechanical finishing operation.
The completed assembly therefore comprises the sheet A an inner insulating layer composed of five layers of polymerized thermosetting plastic material B with intercalation of glass cloths C forming an integral part of the layers B, a metallic pattern F constituting an electrically conductive heating resistor connected , at suitable points, at the terminals D and an outer protective insulating layer composed of three layers of polymerized thermosetting plastic material G, J with, between them, two glass cloths H.
If, for ease of explanation, it has been assumed above that the different layers of thermosetting plastic material and glass cloth all have exactly the same surface area, it goes without saying that, if desired, the different layers of thermosetting plastic material and glass cloth, while protruding on all sides of the metallized surface F, can be arranged so as to overlap on the edges, in order to interfere as little as possible with the uniformity of the outer contour of the wing as a whole, at the ends of the anti-freeze or defroster device.
The thickness of each glass cloth can be, for example, 0.003 inch (0.075 mm), and the heat polymerization can be carried out, for one hour, at a temperature of about 75, if it is desired to accelerate. polymerization of the thermosetting plastic material, in the case of "Araldite D" mixed, in the desired proportion, with the usual hardener referred to as "hardener No. 951".
Further, although in the example given each layer of thermosetting plastic material is individually cured after application, it goes without saying that, if desired, two or more layers of thermosetting plastic can be applied. one after the other without polymerization, with the interposition of layers of fabric required, and the polymerization can proceed thereafter.
Although the invention has been described in its application to a case where the electrically conductive layer is deposited by spraying, it also goes without saying that the latter can be applied in the form of metal sheets, without departing from the scope of the invention.
In any case, it is necessary that the thermosetting plastic material can be polymerized at a temperature which does not cause damage either to the part to which the invention is applied, or to the glass cloth or the like incorporated in the plastic material.
<Desc / Clms Page number 5>
Experience has shown that by using canvas, according to the invention, it is possible to remain perfectly in control of the thickness of the insulating layers, which is especially important and desirable, not only with a view to obtaining insulating layers. as thin as possible in accordance with the requirements of durability and having constant electrical resistance properties, but also so as to change as little as possible the external contour of a part of an airplane, when the application is made to it. electrical defroster equipment, and that the contour of this electrical defroster equipment is aerodynamically satisfactory.
Although, in the example given, glass cloth was used because this material is particularly satisfactory in that it is very stable and that it does not release gases or liquids when it is worn. at the polymerization temperatures of common thermosetting plastics, it goes without saying that other types of fabric can be used, such as, for example, fabrics made of nylon or polyethylene fibers, provided that the polymerization temperatures n 'have no significant influence on these matters.
Further, in some cases, a finely divided material may be mixed with the liquid thermosetting plastic as a filler and not influenced by the polymerization temperatures.
Finally, where it has been a question of "polymerizing" a layer of thermosetting plastic material before the application of a subsequent layer, this term may imply that it is a question of partial polymerization, and the polymerization can then be completed either by applying heat to a subsequent layer or by leaving the whole at atmospheric temperature, if the thermosetting plastic material is of a type which polymerizes at that temperature.
