<Desc/Clms Page number 3>
<Desc/Clms Page number 4>

IMPROVEMENTS TO REFRIGERATION DEVICES FOR BEER DEBITED FROM A KEG,
In installations for the flow of beer from a keg, it is known to pass the beer pipe, connecting the keg to the discharge tap, through a refrigeration device. This device, arranged in a refrigeration cabinet, generally comprises a coil, interposed in the beer pipe, which is immersed in a vat of ice water or brine, cooled by the evaporator system of the refrigeration machine of said ar - 'moire
To quickly lower the temperature of the beer from the keg to its flow temperature, it is necessary to give the beer coil a large cooling surface, that is to say that this coil must have a large number of turns. , in contact with the coolant,
This has the effect of greatly increasing the length of the beer path from the keg to the flow tap The pipe forming this relatively long course contains a fairly large volume of beer which stays, sometimes for long periods in this pipe, between two consecutive flows.
This immobilization of the beer in the pipe can lead to a reduction in its quality and it follows that after a long stop in the flow, for example every morning, it is necessary to proceed to a disgorging of this pipe. , which causes each time a great loss of beer
The object of the present invention is to provide an improved device for the refrigeration of beer, making it possible to greatly reduce the length of the beer cooling coil and therefore the volume of beer lost during a process. disgorging the beer line.
According to the invention, the liquid in the cooling tank of the beer coil (s) of the refrigerated cabinet is subjected to a circulation movement which makes it possible to obtain better transmission from the refrigerators to the coil (s) at beer, while the beer pipe which connects each coil to the beer keg and to the flow tap is surrounded by a hermetic sheath in the hollow of which the cooling liquid of said tank is introduced and is subjected to a movement forced circulation,

By way of simple example, an embodiment of the invention will be described below with reference to the accompanying drawings, in which Figure 1 is a perspective view of a beer delivery installation, incorporating the idea of the invention. ,
FIG. 2 is a view in partial axial section of the motor system controlling the circulation of the cooling liquid in the device according to the invention; Figure 3 shows, in elevation, the arrangement of the motor system of Figure 2 in the coolant tank of a refrigeration cabinet; Figure 4 is a plan view of Figure 3; FIG. 5 is a view in axial section, on a larger scale, of the system for cooling the beer pipes according to the invention; Figures 6 and 7 are plan views of details of Figure 5 and Figure 8 is a perspective view of a variant of the installation shown in Figure 1.
In these drawings, Figures 1 to 3, the refrigeration cabinet 10 of 1 beer flow installation, according to the invention, comprises a tank 11, filled with antifreeze liquid cooled by the evaporator coil 12, connected,

through conduits 13 and 11., to the refrigeration machine (not shown) provided in the cabinet 10.
Depending on the size of the installation, the tank 11 may be fitted with one or more beer cooling coils. In the example
EMI2.2
shown, the tank 11 (Figs. D 1, 3 and 4) is provided with three beer coils 15.a 15 and z respectively connected, on the one hand by the conduits 16a, 16b and 16, to the beer kegs 18, and on the other hand, via the conduits 17a, 17b and 17, Q., to the flow taps 19 mounted on the counter 20.
On the upper wall 21 of the tank 11 is fixed an electric motor 22 (Fig. 2) of low power, the shaft 23, which extends vertically in the tank 11, is provided at its end. a paddle wheel 31, rotating in the iced liquid, inside a pump body 32, the wall of which has an opening 33 for the suction of the iced liquid, as well as a pipe 34 for the delivery of this liquid during the operation of the motor 22, through a duct which extends outside the tank 11.

The group of conduits 16a, 1612 and 16 which connect the beer coils 15a, 15b and 15 to the barrel 18 and the group of conduits 17â, 1712 and 17 which connect these same coils to the flow taps 19, are each engaged in a hermetic sheath, respectively 35a and 35b, preferably of flexible plastic. Each sheath is provided at both ends

sealing plugs 36a, 36b of rubber or similar elastic material in the openings 37 of which are engaged, in a sealed manner, said conduits 16a, 1612 ,, 16 or 7a, 17b, 17ca These plugs 36 to -36, k are hermetically joined to the corresponding sheaths 35s, or 3512, using sleeves 38, for example made of copper. The sheaths 35.La and 35b are covered, over their entire length, with a flexible coating 39 forming thermal insulation.
The outlet pipe 34 of the pump 32 penetrates into the hollow of the sheath 3512, through the rubber packing 36b closing off the end of the latter. The ice water from the tank 11, delivered under pressure by the pump 32, is discharged along the sheath 35b and flows, as shown by the arrows through a pipe 40 which connects the hollow of the sheath 35b to the hollow of sheath

35a and extends into these sheaths.
The ends of the conduits 40 open near the plugs or jams 36a adjacent to one, the barrels 18 and the other, the beer flow taps 190 The ice water circulating in the

the hollow of the sheaths 35a and 35b, after having cooled the beer ducts all along their journey in said sheaths, then escapes through the duct 1, which connects the hollow of the sheath 35 a to the tank 11.
<Desc / Clms Page number 3>
In the case of the variant of the installation shown in Fig. 8, only the group of conduits 17a, 17b, 17c which connects the beer coils to the flow taps, is engaged in a hermetic sheath 35b In this case, the duct 34 for the outlet of the pump 32 enters the hollow of the sheath 35b by the rubber packing 36b closing off the end thereof and the chilled water delivered under pressure enters the sheath and flows through the duct
40 which is connected to pipe 41, which opens into the bottom of 1 tank 11 of compartment 28 (Fig. 3).
It is easy to see that while the engine is running
22, the iced liquid leaving the pump 32, after having made its way through the duct 35b or in the ducts 35a and 35b, returns to the tank
11 through the conduit 41, opening into the bottom of the compartment 28 of the tank 11, rises upwards to overflow into the compartment 27 through the opening 24 located at the top of the partition 29, and then goes down again to exit into the the bottom of the compartment 26 through the opening 25 located at the bottom of the partition 30. The liquid then rises again to arrive in the suction opening 33 of the pump 32.
By traversing this circuit, the iced liquid produces a forced circulation movement in the tank 11 following the arrows shown in figure
3, which allows rapid transmission of refrigeration from the evaporator coil
12 to the beer coils 15a, 15b, 15c, thus preventing the formation of ice around the coil 12, without having to resort to the use of an antifreeze in the iced liquid.
The actuation of the motor 22 can be controlled in various ways depending on the type of installation, either by means of a switch (not shown), combined with the valves 19 which, through a timer, closes the circuit of the motor 22, for a determined time, when the taps are opened, or by means of an independent switch provided at any suitable place which, by means of a timer or continuously,
closes the circuit of said motor 22, or again directly by the thermostat which controls the operation of the refrigerating machine placed in the cabinet 10.-
During the rotation of the motor 22, the pump 32 driven by the shaft 23 sets in motion the ice-cold liquid introduced into the sheaths 35a and 3512., bringing fresh liquid therein, so as to cool rapidly. dement the beer ducts extending into said sheaths.
This cooling of the beer ducts, all along their route, from the kegs 18 to the taps 19, and the forced circulatory movement imparted to the ice water in the hollow of the cooling ducts 35a and 35b, as well as in the tank 11, makes it possible to greatly reduce the surface of the coils offered to the action of this ice-cold water. This reduction of the surface of the beer coils, in the cooling tank thereof, normally results in a reduction in the length of these coils while making it possible to quickly obtain, at the outlet of the taps 19, the desired flow temperature, whatever the ambient temperature of the premises of the installation.
This reduction in the length of the beer coils and consequently in the length of the total path of the beer, in the pipe, corresponds to a serious reduction in the volume of beer lost during a discharge of this pipe, after a long stop in the beer flow.
Tests carried out using the refrigeration device according to the invention have shown that it was possible to reduce by approximately 75% the volume of beer lost during disgorging of the beer pipe. , compared to the volume of beer lost in the refrigeration installations known to date.
In fact, in known installations, a cooling coil is normally required with a length of 15 meters of pipe and 5 meters of beer pipe connecting this coil on the one hand to the flow valve and, on the other hand, to the beer pipe. beer keg housed in the cellar, a total of 20 meters
<Desc / Clms Page number 4>
of pipe For such a length of pipe, pipes of 9 m / m are generally used. section to avoid pressure drops in them. This length and this section correspond to a volume of 1.270 liters of beer circulating from the keg to the flow tap.
On the other hand, thanks to the forced circulation of the chilled water in the refrigeration tank and in the cooling ducts, obtained according to the invention, the length of each beer pipe, including the coil, could be reduced. to a total of 8 meters, with a more constant cooling temperature of the beer.
This reduction in length made it possible, with a pressure drop in the pipe, identical to that of the example cited above, to reduce the passage section of the beer pipes, from 9 mmo to 7 mm., Which reduces the volume. of beer in circulation at 0.300 liters, ie less than a quarter of the volume of beer normally present in the pipes of known beer delivery installations. A significant saving in wasted beer is therefore achieved each time the beer line is disgorged.
It goes without saying that in drinking establishments which do not have cellars to house the beer barrels, the latter can be placed under the counter 20, as shown in FIG. 8.
In this case, the small surface area of the beer pipe, going from the barrel to the beer coil, capable of being cooled in the chilled water circulation duct, will be compensated by an extension of the corresponding beer coil provided in tank 11 On the other hand, when the length of the beer pipe, connecting the keg to the flow valve, will be long, the cooling of this pipe using the forced circulation duct of ice water according to the invention may be sufficient and in this case the cooling coil, provided in the tank 11, could even be omitted.
Optionally, the circulation of the liquid in the tank 11 could be reinforced or activated, for example, by a propeller fixed on the axis 23 of the pump 32.
