<Desc/Clms Page number 2>
<Desc/Clms Page number 3>

ORTHOPEDIC CAMBER FOR SHOES.
The present invention relates to an orthopedic arch which, placed in a shoe, serves to support a weak foot or more or less different from the ideally shaped foot. By means of this arch, the weight of the body can be transmitted, by the foot, to the shoe in a more advantageous and correct manner, for the support of the foot, than would be the case without such an arch.
Over time, a large number of different designs and special constructions of camber have been proposed without it being possible, however, to produce a fully satisfactory camber. health. The present invention, however, relates to a design which has been found to be particularly advantageous with regard to its supporting effect and which, moreover, offers great advantages due to its relatively low manufacturing costs and the light weight of the product. the arch.
The arch according to the invention is of the type having a raised and thickened part on the side corresponding to the internal dimension of the foot, part which serves to receive a considerable part of the weight of the body transmitted to the foot, and likewise having, on the opposite side, a high and thickened part, preferably of a height and a slightly less thickness, part which constitutes a kind of counter-support for the foot, the camber being moreover, in the longitudinal direction, of a substantially curved upwards, so that longitudinal sections through the camber at the upper side of the latter appear as substantially convex curves transforming at their ends into concave curves.
While, generally, the known arches, in terms of their cross section, do not differ much from one line
<Desc / Clms Page number 2>
rectilinear in the middle, apart from a rise in the high part on the internal side of the feet since at the front, they are rather curved upwards and at the rear only, they present a slight downward curve, an essential characteristic of the camber according to the invention is that it has a shape such that its upper side, in cross section, is in the form of concave curves, that is to say that its cross section is curved towards down to a fairly pronounced degree.
According to the invention, the arch is further made of elastic material and its curvature, in the longitudinal direction, is provided of such a magnitude that between the arch and the lower sole, a void is formed which allows elastic deformation. camber, the latter being flattened longitudinally during walking due to the pressure of the foot, while the dimension of the camber is further provided so that at the same time as the aforementioned periodic longitudinal flattening occurs, a Periodic increase in the lateral curvature of the camber is determined, This results in the special advantageous effect that the high lateral parts of the camber, which support the foot laterally ,,
are brought together so that they form a part that fits tightly around the foot and thus increase the arch support effect during walking
According to a further development of the invention, said concave curves along which the upper side of the camber extends in cross section have an increased curvature at one or both sides of the camber, so that curved edges upwards are produced, improving the support effect at the high thickened parts, at one or both sides of the arch.
The camber according to the invention can be made of a suitable material of choice, exhibiting suitable strength and elasticity. While the known shanks are generally made of metal, resin known as "plexiglass", hard fibrous substances or other relatively hard, stiff and strong materials and, in many cases, are made up of several different parts made up of different materials, it is essential for the invention that the camber is made of a piece of a synthetic material, such as synthetic resin, of suitable elasticity and shape stability, which, in addition, is relatively soft and has a relatively low specific weight.
A particularly suitable material according to the invention is polyethylene, which is distinguished by its great lightness (specific weight 0.92 - 0.95), elasticity and shape stability. It is, moreover, relatively soft, so that it cannot injure the foot and cannot cause any wear worth mentioning of the insole of the shoe. Plus, it can last, being cleaned with many different agents and being resistant to most chemicals. The material is almost colorless, slightly milky but there are limitless possibilities of coloring, so that it can be colored in any desired shade.
If polyethylene is the preferred material, however, other materials may, as indicated, also be used, preferably materials having qualities similar to polyethylene.
The invention is illustrated by the accompanying drawing, showing one embodiment.
FIG. 1 shows in plan, a camber according to one embodiment of the invention.
Figure 2 shows the same arch seen from the right of Figure 1.
Figure 3 shows a cross section along the line III-III of Figure 1, and
<Desc / Clms Page number 3>
Figure 4 shows, on a smaller scale, a shoe lined with the arch shown in Figures 1 to 3, placed in the shape it has when it is not stressed, that is to say when 'it is not subjected to the pressure of the foot.
The arch shown is intended for a left foot and it is, on the internal side of the foot, that is to say on the right of figure 1, provided with a raised part 1, while on the left, it is planned a part
2, raised to a somewhat lesser degree (see Figures 2 and 3). The thickness of the camber is, practically speaking constant over most of the camber, for example about 3 mm., But the thickness of the left raised part 2 is somewhat greater, for example of 3, 5-4 mm., And the thickness of the right elevated part 1 is even greater, for example 4.5-5 mm.
Thanks to these thickenings of the material in the upper parts, on the one hand an increase in strength is obtained. of said parts, favorable for the support capacity of the arch, and, on the other hand, a firm support of suitable shape for the foot, when, due to the pressure of the foot, the arch is completely crushed by walking or is almost completely lowered against the insole, or insole, indicated by 7 in Figure 4,
As can be seen in Figure 2, the camber, viewed in the longitudinal direction, is curved upwards and the highest point on the lower side of the camber is designated as 3, based on the longitudinal section crossing the camber, in the vicinity of the center line thereof,
so that point 3 designates at the same time the lowest point of said cross section (see figure 3). At its anterior end 4, the shape of the transverse section is only a slightly arched curve and the arch, at this point, tapers to a point to be flush with the sole of the shoe In the middle of the arch, the cross-section has, as shown in figure 3, a strongly downward curved shape, which is further curved at the ends (sides of the camber), so that in this place are formed upward curved edges . Towards the rear, towards the heel part 5, the curvature of the cross section decreases. Overall, the camber, between the side elevations, extends evenly and smoothly from front to back.
The camber is advantageously perforated, as indicated by the holes 6, but these perforations can extend, practically speaking, over the entire camber.
When walking, the pressure of the foot will cause a longitudinal flattening of the arch, point 3 moving downwards, while at the same time the tapered front part 4 will slide a little forward on the first 7 (see figure 4). Due to the construction of the camber, the two raised side parts 1 and 2 will then be brought closer to each other, the curvature of the cross section of the camber being increased when the camber is pushed down and the raised side parts will adapt more firmly to the dimensions of the foot, so that the support of the latter will be considerably improved. As soon as the foot pressure ceases, when it is lifted off the ground, the arch immediately returns to its normal position.
This constant change in shape during walking causes a call for air between the arch and the first, through the hole 6 of the arch and thus determines good ventilation.
