MOTEUR A COMBUSTION INTERNE A DOUBLE EFFET.
<Desc/Clms Page number 2>
<Desc/Clms Page number 3>
- Figure 3 est la même représentation avec le piston dans une position légèrement supérieure, tandis que - Figure 4 montre le piston dans la meme position qu'à la figure 2, mais pendant son mouvement de descente ; - Figure 5 est une coupe d'une autre forme de réalisation du moteur suivant l'invention ; - Figure 6 montre un tiroir a disque vu de cote, a échelle agrandie ; - Figure 7 montre un autre tiroir à disque, vu de côté; - Figure 8 est une coupe d'un cylindre et d'un carter d'un moteur à essence a deux temps, tandis que - Figure 9 est la meme représentation pour une autre posi,-- tion du piston;
<Desc/Clms Page number 4>
<Desc/Clms Page number 5>
<Desc/Clms Page number 6>

DOUBLE ACTING INTERNAL COMBUSTION ENGINE.
The invention relates to. a two-stroke internal combustion engine with-sweeping through the crankcase which is connected to the two or more intake ports opening into the cylinder, the covering and uncovering of which are controlled by the piston, said ports being discoveries shortly before the completion of the expansion stroke, and with one or more exhaust ports for the evacuation of combustion products, also controlled by the piston.
The double-acting engine described in the main patent operates in a two-stroke cycle, in that the fuel mixture is introduced in a precompressed state into the cylinder, where it is successively subjected to the compression time and the time. expansion, the exhaust of the combustion gases and the introduction of fresh pre-compressed gases taking place before a new compression time.
This motor is double-acting, because the intake of the outside air and its prior compression are carried out in the housing, by the effect of the rear face of the piston.
The precompressed mixture is discharged from the crankcase through a channel or passage for overflow or for transferring this mixture into the engine cylinder.
This overflow or transfer channel also receives burnt gases first and foremost, at the end of the expansion or relaxation time. Thanks to the slide which is the object of the present invention, this fraction of the burnt az escaping into the transfer channel does not find an outlet in the casing, but will be discharged by the arrival of fresh precompressed gases from the casing and swept up to the escape light to the atmosphere.
In general, the invention therefore relates to an internal combustion engine operating according to the two-stroke cycle of the men-type.
<Desc / Clms Page number 2>
mentioned at the beginning of this specification, this engine being characterized in that the various intake ports are in communication with a common overflow or transfer passage, the orifice opening into the crankcase is controlled by a slide placed under the control of the tree at my, - level.
According to a feature of the invention, the slide driven by the crank shaft also controls the admission of the fresh gas mixture into the crankcase.
According to a particular embodiment of the invention, all the inlet openings are connected to a common transfer duct leading to the face of a drawer inside the casing, the covering and the uncovering of said casing. being controlled by a disc drawer having marne axis as the crank shaft, and connected to the crankshaft.
In an internal combustion engine having a single main bearing, the disc drawer according to the invention can advantageously co-operate with a glass arranged on the wall of the casing which is opposite to the main bearing, said disc drawer being supported moreover from known per se by a pivot journaled in said wall, and connected to the crank via a button mounted eccentrically in the disc drawer. A very simple type of internal combustion engine is obtained when the arm crank according to the invention is in the form of a disc drawer
A very thorough check of the operating conditions of the cylinder can be achieved if the wall of the housing with which the disc drawer cooperates according to the invention is provided,
in addition to the opening of the transfer line, an opening connected in a manner known per se to the carburetor of the engine. In such a motor, it is possible to achieve all the advantages relating to the control of the transfer and to the control of the intake to the crankcase without providing additional elements likely to complicate the motor.
In a suitable embodiment of the internal nozzle motor according to the invention, the aforementioned additional opening may be arranged at a distance from the axis of rotation of the disc drawer different from the distance from the orifice of the disc slide. transfer pipe. Furthermore, said disc tray has an opening which, for a certain position of the disc tray, communicates with the additional opening in the wall of the housing.
According to the invention, the slide may take the form of a paddle wheel or paddle wheel.
As it passes through the paddlewheel or paddle wheel, kinetic energy is imparted to the air which results in higher volumetric efficiency so that a greater charge of air and gas can be supplied to the cylinder. In addition, the sweeping of the housing becomes more effective. In addition, the mixture of air and fuel becomes better, and improved efficiency, higher intermediate pressure and lower fuel consumption are obtained than in the case of known engines of this type.
The internal combustion engine can according to the invention be provided with an adjustment member arranged in such a way that the duration of the opening of the discharge ports of the paddle wheel can be adjusted while the engine is running.
As the degree of filling depends on the number of revolutions, the opening time must vary with the number of revolutions if the efficiency is to be kept substantially at the same value at the different speeds. Usually, it is not possible to adjust the intake time while the engine is running; it is therefore necessary to arrange the motor
<Desc / Clms Page number 3>
so as to obtain proper efficiency at low speeds as well, but this has been done at the expense of high power at high speeds.
When the engine is provided with an adjustment member of the type in question, a suitable efficiency can be achieved, however, both at high and low speeds.
The connection between the crank shaft and the spool is generally made by a pin mounted in the connecting rod and passing through a hole in the spool, but like the opening in the glass of an internal combustion engine following l The invention is located at such a point that said hole in the drawer will communicate with this opening, there will be leaks and unwanted air may enter the housing.
This drawback can be eliminated in an embodiment according to the invention, of an internal combustion engine in which the slide has a hole parallel to the axis of rotation and receiving a pin mounted on the connecting rod, said pin being of diameter smaller than that of the hole, and further providing a lining of elastic material between the hole and the pin,
Said packing will thus prevent the penetration of unwanted air, and another advantage of this method of construction will be that vibrations and other irregularities between moving parts will be compensated for by deformation of the packing. the power of a two-stroke engine depends to a large extent on the amount of dead space in the crankcase and in the envelope limited by the piston.
The smaller the total volume of all empty space in the engine, the greater the amount of air sucked into it and the greater the load supplied to the cylinder. In order to reduce said volume as much as possible, the housing may, according to the invention, be provided with a filling member shaped and arranged so as to fill part of the cavity of the piston when the latter is in its lower position.
In what follows we describe various embodiments of an internal combustion engine according to the invention, with reference to the drawings, in which: - Figure 1 is a sectional view of an internal combustion engine with the piston in its position center dead center.
- Figure 2 is the same section with the piston in a position slightly higher than its central dead center position, during the upward movement of the piston.
- Figure 3 is the same representation with the piston in a slightly higher position, while - Figure 4 shows the piston in the same position as in Figure 2, but during its downward movement; - Figure 5 is a sectional view of another embodiment of the engine according to the invention; - Figure 6 shows a disc drawer seen from the side, on an enlarged scale; - Figure 7 shows another disc tray, seen from the side; - Figure 8 is a section through a cylinder and a crankcase of a two-stroke gasoline engine, while - Figure 9 is the same representation for another position, - tion of the piston;
- Figure 10 shows a detail of the motor shown in Figure 8, and - Figure 11 is a drawer, while
<Desc / Clms Page number 4>
- Figure 12 is a section through another embodiment of an internal combustion engine according to the invention in plan, perpendicular to the crank shaft, and - Figure 13 shows the same representation as Figure 11, viewed from above.
The internal combustion engine shown in Figures 1 to 4 comprises a housing 1 and a cylinder 2 with a piston which; by a crank 4, is connected to the crank button 5 of a double bent crank shaft 6 7. The crank shaft 7 is journaled in the housing 1 in the ball bearing 8.
In the housing 1 there is a passage 9 corresponding to a corresponding duct 10; there may be several passages which are connected to passage 9 but in what follows an engine with only one passage is described. The transfer of fresh gases from the crankcase to the cylinder is controlled by a disc slide 11 fixed to a pivot 12 which, by means of a bill bearing 13, rests in the crankcase. The disc drawer 11 is provided with an eccentric hole to receive the crank button 5. The lumen of the passage 9, which opens into the cylinder 2, is controlled by the piston, while the lumen of the passage 9, which opens into the cylinder. housing 1 is controlled by slide 11.
The disc drawer 11 for the motor according to Figures 1-4 is shown sideways to Figure 6 and is provided with an elongated slot 14 concentric with the pivot 12 and the distance to the latter corresponding to the distance of 1 ' orifice of passage 9 in the housing, at pivot 12.
Thus once on each turn of the disc drawer 11, the slot 14 will uncover the orifice of the passage 9, said orifice being cut from the housing during the remainder of the turn of the disc drawer. By suitably dimensioning the length of the slot and by suitably placing the hole which cooperates with the crank button, the instant of uncovering and the duration of uncovering of the passage can be determined as required.
Your transfer duct 10 opens into the wall of the cylinder through a lumen 15. In the wall of the cylinder there are furthermore one or more discharge ports 16 through which the products of combustion can escape. As it appears from the drawings, the lower edges of said ports are located at the same level, while the upper edges of the ports of the transfer duct are located slightly higher than the upper edge of the exhaust passage. This means that the openings 15 of the transfer duct are uncovered by the piston during its descent, shortly before the exhaust port 16 is, while conversely they are covered a little later than the orifice d. 'exhaust 16 during the ascent of the piston.
the motor shown in Figures 1-4 and 6 operates as follows:
The mixture of air and fuel drawn into the crankcase out of the carburetor through an opening (not shown) will be forced into the cylinder when the products of combustion have left the cylinder. This is regulated by the disc tray 11 which at this moment uncovers the passage opening 9 leading to the housing. When the piston has gone through the first part of the expansion stroke, the lumen 15 is uncovered, and a part of the combustion products will pass into the transfer duct 9, but will not be able (as shown clearly in Figure 4 ) enter the housing since the orifice is covered by the disc 11.
When the light 16 is discovered, the exhaust begins, and when it has ended, the orifice of the passage 9 will be discovered by the slit 14 .. The fresh gases will now be forced to rise in the cylinder by the pressure which reigns in the housing as it emerges with evidence from Figure 2. When the piston, during its upward movement, has completely covered the slot 16, the slot 15 is still slightly open.
<Desc / Clms Page number 5>
te, and it will be able to enter a little more gas in the cylinder as one sees it evidently in Figure 3, which makes that one obtains an after-charge,
When lumen 15 has also been closed, compression begins and continues for the remainder of piston ascent.
The disc spool can be used to control the communication between the carburetor and the crankcase as evident from Figure 5 from which a further opening 18 in the crankcase wall is connected to the carburetor. One can either use the same slot 14 for the transfer passage and the orifice 4. * admissions or the disc tray may have another slot 17 (Figures 5 and 7) arranged at a distance from the center different from that of the slot 14, and said slot 17 can in this case cooperate with an opening 18 in the wall of the casing at a corresponding distance from the center.
The internal combustion engine shown in Figures 8-13 comprises a cylinder 19 fixed to a housing 20, a plate 21 being mounted between the two parts, which plate carries a block 14a projecting upwardly, with several shaped slots. such that the connecting rod 22 and the piston pin 23 can move freely when the piston 24 of the engine reciprocates in the cylinder. The plate 21 has two annular slots to receive parts of the side wall of the piston in its lower position, and in the side wall of the piston there are recesses to receive the parts between the annular slots o The plate 21 and the block 14a in combination form a filling member occupying part of the space in the piston when it is near its lower position,
thus reducing the dead space in the engine the engine is provided with a crank shaft 25 journaled in a roller bearing 26 and on which is fixed a flywheel 27 with a crank knob on which the connecting rod is mounted.
In the housing further journals a shaft 28 to which is fixed a disc slide 29 having the appearance of a paddle wheel or paddle wheel. the drawer is shown in Figures 11 and 13, where it is seen that it has an elongated depression 30 on one side and an elongated depression 31 on the other side, these depressions being in communication with the curved surface of the spool by s radial passages 32 and 33. The face of the spool 29 opposite to that which is on the side of the connecting rod is flat and cooperates with a glass of the housing. In the face of the spool there is an opening 34 which can be connected to the carburetor and which communicates with the vacuum 30 of the spool.
The depression 31 faces the casing, into which also opens a transfer duct 35 communicating with the openings in the curved face of the drawer. The transfer pipe 35 is divided into two passages 36 and 37 opening into the cylinder on either side of the latter.
In the drawer 29 (figure 10) there is a hole 31 which is parallel to the axis of rotation and in said hole there is a pin 39 in which an annular groove is made to receive a ring 40 of a flexible material. and of a diameter such that it fits airtight in the hole 38.
The pin 29 is fixed to the connecting rod such that the spool 29 participates in the rotational movement of the crank shaft. said ring 40 ensures airtightness so that it cannot penetrate undesirable air into the casing, in addition to the fact that any irregularities and vibrations will be absorbed by the flexible material. around the drawer 29, Figure 12, is mounted a ring 41 provided with an orifice 42 corresponding to the orifices of the curved surface of the drawer and located opposite the orifice of the transfer duct 35.
By means of movement transmission members, the crown 41 is

connected to a regulator driven by the crank shaft and it will be rotated in a direction depending on the increase or decrease in the speed of rotation of the motor.
When the engine is running, air and fuel are drawn into the crankcase through orifice 34, due to the partial vacuum produced by the ascent of the piston, the vacuum 30 being at this particular moment in a position facing the engine. port 34, and during its flow through the radial passages 32 of the drawer, an appreciable kinetic energy is imparted to the drawn air, so that it is projected into the housing near the walls thereof. this.
When the piston then descends, the orifice 34 will be covered, while the first part of the passages 33 will come into a position facing the transfer passage 35, and due to the excess pressure produced in the crankcase by the downward movement of the piston, the mixture of air and fuel in the crankcase will be forced to pass through the depression 31 and exit through the passages 33, so that the air will receive kinetic energy so as to be precipitated in the transfer passages 35, 36 and 37, and in the cylinder. Air and gas are thus transported through the casing from the periphery of the casing to its center, as a result of which they are effectively mixed, the sweeping of the casing also becoming very efficient.
The great force with which the air is precipitated in the cylinder produces a very efficient sweeping of the cylinder and increases the volumetric efficiency.
Thanks to the adjusting ring 41 the cut-off edge between the passages 33 of the drawer and the orifice of the transfer duct 35 can be moved, so that the instant and the duration of the communication between the crankcase and the cylinder can be changed, and by connecting the adjusting crown 41 to a regulator and by suitably choosing the relative dimensioning of the members, it is possible to have a suitable efficiency both at high and low speeds.
