<Desc/Clms Page number 2>
<Desc/Clms Page number 3>

PROCEDURE FOR OPERATING TUNNEL OVENS COMBINED WITH DRYERS AND
INSTALLATIONS FOR THE IMPLEMENTATION OF THE SAID PROCESS.
The invention relates to a method for operating tunnel ovens combined with dryers. It relates in particular to installations in which the cooling of the products to be cooked or calcined is carried out by means of tubular conduits or registers placed in the cooling zone and traversed by water, the water thus heated being used for heating chambers intended for drying the product to be subsequently fired or calcined.
Furnaces operated in this way differ from conventional air-cooled furnaces, in which the cooling air is brought into the vault and the side walls of the furnace, by a conspicuously lower fuel consumption due in particular to the possibility that they present to allow to remain absolutely in control of the temperature in the channel of the furnace.
One of the consequences of the good thermal efficiency of furnaces of this type is that the quantities of waste heat remaining available for the heating of the dryers associated with the furnace are much lower than in the usual air-cooled tunnel furnaces operating with a load. much less good heat, so that in many cases, especially when it comes to drying molded ceramic parts, which, due to the molding processes used have a fairly high water content this being valid not only for parts manufactured, for example, by casting, but also for those whose manufacture requires a greater plasticity of the pastes to conform :! these quantities of heat are not sufficient to ensure the heating of the drying installation.
The use of the relatively large quantities of heat necessary for the drying of such products requires the best possible use of the waste heat available in the tunnel kilns of the
<Desc / Clms Page number 2>
aforementioned type, operating with good thermal efficiency and, therefore, with relatively small amounts of waste heat.
Furnaces which, for cooling, use tubular conduits or registers with water circulation, that is to say which use a liquid refrigerant., Are in themselves in much more favorable conditions than those with cooling by air, which can only be brought to the dryers - and this, as a rule, directly - only through very large cross-section pipes and with significant losses, regardless of the quality of the insulation.
Since the air leaving the dryers and escaping into the open air has a still significant latent heat, it carries with it significant amounts of lost calories, while, in the case of recovery of the waste heat by water, the latent heat of the latter can be completely used until the temperature equilibrium is achieved with the dryer, because the pipes, preferably finned, can extend over any desired length, through the dryers. As the water can be reintroduced, and indeed being reintroduced, at this same temperature in the cooling circuit, no heat losses occur.
This method of indirect cooling, that is to say in an atmosphere practically in equilibrium, the only movement of which results from the natural upward tendency of the air laden with humidity which heats up little by little, is very advantageous in the case, in particular, where the product to be dried is particularly fragile.
The combination of a tunnel oven operated in the aforementioned manner with such a drying installation entails difficulties which result from the need to bring to the dryer in the form of heated water, throughout the drying operation, the quantities of required heat "at all times.
The amounts of heat released by the tunnel kiln vary, for example, depending on the length of stay, especially when the kiln is not used to always process the same product and for the same time. These quantities of heat also vary as a function of the sometimes frequent corrections required by the adjustments to be made in the cooling pipes, with a view to maintaining a systematic cooling curve, depending, if necessary, on variations in the temperature. quantity of heat which must be taken from the cooling system for the needs of the tunnel kiln itself (preheating, burner operation, etc.)., and depending on other factors.
The flattening of these difficulties constitutes the object of the present invention which makes it possible to bring at any moment, to the drying installation combined with the tunnel oven and independently of the variations in the quantity of waste heat transferred by the latter, the necessary quantities of heat, so as to completely eliminate any temperature variation from the dryers.
This result is obtained, in accordance with the invention, thanks to the fact that after having passed through the pipes or tubular registers, the water is used for heating a drying chamber and that the quantity of heat transferred is adjusted after this last.
Another solution in accordance with the invention consists in carrying out the adjustment of the quantity of heat transferred to the drying chamber by means of an auxiliary heating boiler arranged in the pipe going to the drying chamber. This auxiliary boiler supplies the excess heat necessary to supplement the quantity of heat essential for the operation of the drying installation.
All the devices must therefore be arranged in such a way that the quantity of heat, transferred by the tunnel oven in the most favorable case, is a little less than the smallest quantity required by the drying installation.
<Desc / Clms Page number 3>
According to another characteristic of the invention, the auxiliary heating boiler is provided, for this purpose, with an adjustment member, controlled from control points provided in the drying installation, and which automatically adjusts the temperature. heating of the boiler so that it produces the additional quantity of heat at each instant, the heating of said boiler being advantageously provided by the same means, for example gas or electricity, as the tunnel oven.
In another particularly advantageous embodiment of the invention, the auxiliary heating boiler is omitted and the additional variable quantity of heat to be transferred to the drying chamber as a function of the operation, in particular that of the tunnel oven, is supplied by pipes or tubular registers, arranged in the combustion zone of the tunnel kiln, at the end of said zone, or in its immediate vicinity, said tubular pipes or registers being provided in the duct of the kiln and not serving functionally on cooling, and being provided with screen registers, in particular ceramic.
The adjustment of the additional quantity of heat transferred into the cooling zone to the value necessary for the operation of the drying installation is ensured by a device controlled, preferably automatically, as a function of the temperature conditions in the cooling chamber (s). drying, and which more or less moves the screen registers which close the tubular conduits arranged at the aforementioned locations in the combustion zone.
According to another characteristic of the invention, the necessary differential quantities of heat can also be supplied, from the preheating zone, by registers or tubular conduits with regulating screens and with water circulation, arranged for this purpose. in said zone and which can be used at the same time to vary, in an appropriate manner, the temperature conditions in the preheating zone, both in the vertical path and in the horizontal path of the furnace duct.
The detailed arrangement of the drying installation can, in s oi be any, and the latter can include one or more successive chambers or be established in the form of a drying duct.
It is likewise immaterial for the invention that the hot water, after having given up its heat to the product to be dried, is brought back to the pipes at the end of the tunnel kiln, that it circulates naturally, or by pumps; the absolute values of the temperatures are also irrelevant as regards the principle of the invention; they are only a function of the conditions imposed in each particular case.
The drying operation takes place under particularly advantageous conditions, as has been pointed out above, when it is carried out in a practically balanced atmosphere.
A particularly important advantage of the process according to the invention lies, moreover, in the possibility of controlling the temperatures of reintroduction of water into the cooling pipes of the fourtunnel on its return from the drying installation, which ensures regularity. of all devices.
The arrangement, according to the invention, of tubular conduits for circulation of refrigerant fluid in the preheating zone opens, moreover, entirely new possibilities, for example for the firing of mixed masses of products with total calcination and, so to speak. , self-cooking, because local cooling, which must be systematically provided in the preheating zone, makes it possible to perfectly control the progress of the operation of cooking masses of this nature.
This measure is, for these reasons, also applicable independently of the combination of the tunnel oven with a heating installation and it itself constitutes a characteristic of the invention.

It is understood that the invention is not limited to the embodiment described which has been given only by way of example.
