<Desc/Clms Page number 2>

IMPROVEMENTS IN FERRITIC STEELS RESISTANT TO RAMPING
OR CREEP.
The invention includes improvements to creep or creep resistant ferric steels.
It is well known that the majority of ferritic and austenitic steels resistant to creep or creep contain molybdenum, and this element is generally regarded as an essential constituent in these materials. In ferritic steels resistant to creep or creep, molybdenum is invariably present, for example in the form of carbon-molybdenum, chromium-molybdenum, molybdenum-vanadium, chromium-molybdenum-vanadium, and other special steels.
Molybdenum is known to be a strategically important alloying element, and has previously been considered as a vital metal for the economy of a country when it comes to alloy steels suitable for applica- plications involving high temperatures.
The present invention provides alloy compositions which, without involving the use of molybdenum as an alloying component, have creep or creep resistance properties comparable to or superior to those of creep or creep resistant steels containing molybdenum of which illeat question more. ,high.
The alloys provided by the invention comprise the range of compositions below:
Carbon 0.02 to 0.15%
Silicon 0.05 to 1.0%
Manganese 0.05 to 2.0%
Chromium 0.10 to 3.5%
<Desc / Clms Page number 2>
Vanadium 0.05 to 1.0%
Titanium 0.05 to 0.40%
Boron 0.003 to 0.05%
Iron in substance the rest
It is permissible to include nickel in the composition in a proportion of up to 1%. Tungsten can also be present up to 2% and actually improves the alloys in question to some extent.
Tungsten, however, is another alloying element of great strategic value, and it should be noted that its inclusion in alloys according to the present invention is not essential.
The preferred range of compositions according to the present invention is
Carbon 0.06 to 0.12%
Silicon 0.10 to 0.50%
Manganese 0.50 to 1.0%
Chromium 0.40 to 2.0%
Vanadium 0.25 to 0.75%
Titanium 0.075 to 0.30%
Boron 0.003 to 0.01%
Iron remains
