<Desc/Clms Page number 2>
<Desc/Clms Page number 3>

METHOD AND DEVICE FOR THE EXECUTION OF VARIOUS BODIES9, IN PARTICULAR OF
HOLLOW BODY FROM DUCTILE MATERIALS.
The invention relates to the construction of various bodies, in particular hollow bodies, having bosses, tabs, collars or other protrusions, as well as one or more appendages, preferably elongated, all made of ductile materials, in particular made of light metal. To ensure the rapid and economical execution of such bodies, and in accordance with the invention, use is made of the combination of an extrusion process and a die-forging process, so that the blank is placed in a die serving as a compression chamber, which reproduces the bosses, lugs, collars, etc.
and which is provided with outlet openings for the appendages to be formed, to be extruded from this die using one or more punches penetrating therein, with the possible use of mandrels, so that the hollows of the matrix are first filled with repressed material and the extension of the coiled appendages then takes place.
The combination of extrusion and die-forging operations is already known in principle, that for the manufacture of bodies of simple shape, such as rivets, head screws, etc. processes in which, so to speak, only the press residue which remains after the extrusion operation undergoes a determined shaping. We have not yet tackled the more complex shapes, in which the compression chamber must have recesses in the manner of dies.
One procedure, which extends the possibilities of application of such combined methods, is that the punch (s) pass through the section of the part where the latter has bosses, tabs, clamps, etc. and drive it out - pushing it back through the die past those bosses, etc. - an appropriate amount of material towards curved, hollow or solid appendages. The finished object in this case has an uninterrupted fibrous structure, so that the upper part or head provided with
<Desc / Clms Page number 2>
prominences mentioned above, is closely united, by a texture common to the coiled or spun part.
In many cases it will be advantageous to combine, with the extrusion process in the direction of advance of the punches, a reflux process against the direction of movement of the punches, so that, on the one hand, the material escapes in the form of one or more strands, mainly in the direction of advance of the punches, and, on the other hand, falls backwards, mainly against the direction of advancement of the punches, possibly up to the filling of the die.
Taking into account the shape of the objects to be executed, it will be judicious or necessary to establish the matrix in several parts. This can also end in a special die which has the outlet openings, suitably profiled, for the appendages.
According to an advantageous variant of the invention, the device for carrying out the method according to the invention may be constituted by a compression cylinder of standard construction, with smooth walls, terminated by a tool, the surfaces of which face downwards. of the compression cylinder form the die which shapes the bosses, tabs, collars, etc., the extrusion openings for the coiled portion being made in the bottom of the die. Finally, the punch may have, in particular as regards its front face, the form of a counter-die or a counter-stamp.
The process according to the invention, as well as two suitable presses, will be described below with reference to the accompanying drawings, in which:
Fig. 1 is a side view of the object to be executed.
Fig. 2 is a sectional view of a press before pressing with the blank inserted.
Fig. 3 is a section corresponding to that of FIG. 2, at the end of pressing.
Fig. 4 shows another press in section, before pressing, the blank being inserted.
Fig. 5 is a section similar to that of FIG. 4, at the end of pressing.
According to FIG, 1, the object to be performed is constituted by a hollow cylindrical head 1, having lateral bosses 2 and a collar 3, as well as a tubular extension or appendage 3, extending in the axial direction of the part .
To make this part, a bi-partite die 5, shown in figs. 2 and 3 as being divided in the plane of the drawing. The hollow of the die corresponds to the outer shape of the head 1 provided with the bosses 2 and the collar 3. The die 5 ends at the bottom with a die 6 with a circular outlet opening 7 for the coil. The punch 8 is guided in the upper recess 9 of the die 5. This punch is provided with a mandrel 10, the diameter of which corresponds to the internal diameter of the tubular appendage 4. In the present case, the blank 11 is formed. by a hollow cylinder with thick walls, the recess of which allows the mandrel 10 to pass freely or with a backflow of material, moreover relatively minimal.
The material pushed back during the penetration of the punch 8 into the blank 11, possibly reheated, fills the hollows provided in the matrix for the bosses 2 and the collar 3 and, moreover S'élèvē, to the against the movement of the punch, until complete filling of the die, to then form the tubular coil 4 between the mandrel 10 and the die 6. The end of the pressing process, which is determined by stops, not shown in the drawing, is shown in fig. 3.-
Moreover, the mandrel 10 does not necessarily have to be rigidly joined to the punch 8. It can be mounted so as to move in this punch, as is often the case in the tube spinning process.
In this case, the man-
<Desc / Clms Page number 3>
drin stops, after having reached the outlet orifice of the die 6, in the position 10 'shown in dotted lines. in fig. 3.,
The press shown in fig. 4 and 5 comprises, in accordance with a variant of the invention, a cylindrical compression chamber 5 ', the walls of which are smooth in accordance with current practice. This chamber ends in a die-die, for example in two parts 6 ', 6 ".
The internal surfaces of the die-die form an actual die intended to shape the bosses, tabs, collars, etc. When it comes to pressing a relatively long blank - as in the illustrated case - it is useful that the mandrel 10 is movable relative to the pointgon 8.
This punch has a drum 8 'of greater thickness, which fits in the compression chamber 5'.
The blank 11, having the shape of a hollow cylinder 'and possibly reheated, is inserted into the space delimited by the chamber 5' and the die 6 ', 6 ". Before starting the actual pressing, the mandrel 10 is advanced through the blank until it exceeds the orifice 7. Then the punch 8 descends, and pushes the material of the blank 11 on the one hand into the recesses of the die die 6 ', 6 "and, on the other hand, beyond these recesses, to extrude this material in the form of a tubular coil 4 through the annular slot which remains between the mandrel
10, now immobilized and the wall of the orifice 7 of the die.
At the end of the pressing, determined by stops (not shown), the blank has taken the form shown in FIG. 5, that is to say has the bosses 2, the collar 3 and the tubular appendage 4. Further, the hollowed out front surface of the punch has formed an annular protrusion in the interior of the hollow body.
Thanks to the fact that the portion of the material which flows towards the appendage 4 is pushed back so as to pass opposite the part forming the projections 2, 3, an uninterrupted appearance is observed at the end of the pressing. fibers of the material. This results in correspondingly favorable resistance characteristics in the object executed.
It goes without saying that the method according to the invention also makes it possible to prepare articles having several appendages and the upper part of which has any suitable shape, which is suitable for stamping.
