<Desc/Clms Page number 2>

MEANS FOR 'FIGHTING' SKIN DISEASES 'IN ANIMALS AND: METHOD' FOR 'PREPARATION: THIS' MEANS *
The invention relates to veterinary compositions for the treatment of skin conditions in animals and methods of preparing the same. In particular, the preparations are suitable for combating the stubborn scab caused by Demodex Folliculorum.
Demodex mange is caused by mites that burrow into the hair follicles of an animal, causing irritation.
As a result, overgrowth and exfoliation of the epidermal cells occurs on the skin surface. This allows bacteria and / or fungi to penetrate the affected areas. The subsequent pus formation may cause general sepsis or toxaemia. Subsequently, progressive emaciation of the affected animal can occur; often this also produces a particularly unpleasant odor. Finally, if the process is not interrupted in time, death occurs.
In the Netherlands, Demodex mange occurs especially in dogs and other small pets; In addition to the fact that the disease obviously seriously affects the health condition of the animal, the stench associated with the disease is a very unpleasant phenomenon.
There is also the possibility that, among other things, dairy cattle will be affected by this condition, especially during the stable period. This has the consequence that the milk production of the affected animals decreases, while if the disease is not recognized in time, death can occur.
Demodex scab has until now been very difficult to treat adequately. The agents used for combating this disease require a long series of treatments, which are generally still unsuccessful, especially when the Demodex mange is already secondarily infected by bacteria or fungi.
<Desc / Clms Page number 2>
It has now been found that Demodex mange, even in the purulent stage with a secondary bacterial and fungal infection, can be controlled, healing the affected animals in a surprisingly short time and suppressing the repulsive odor inherent in this contamination. can be treated by treating the diseased animals with a solution, in a nonionic surfactant carrier, of 5-nitro 2-furfuryl methyl ether, p-di-isobutyl cresoxy-ethoxyethyl dimethyl benzylammonium chloride and benzyl benzoate. Preferably, sufficient water is added to this composition to obtain a free-flowing solution which can be applied to the infected areas of the skin of the affected animals by spraying or rubbing.
The preparations are very easy to handle. They do not stain; the surfactant solubilizes water insoluble components such as benzyl benzoate and 5-nitro 2-furfuryl methyl ether, allows the preparation to spread well at the site of infection, promotes transfer of the dissolved medicaments and makes the preparation adheres well to the skin.
Animals treated with these preparations did not show any toxic symptoms due to use. This is surprising since it was found that benzyl benzoate could not be used in the treatment of cats. Tests have shown that infected cats tolerated and responded favorably to treatment with the present agents.
Preferably, in practice, a preparation of approximately the following composition is used:

<tb> 5-nitro <SEP> 2-furfuryl <SEP> methyl ether <SEP> 0.4 <SEP>% <SEP>

In addition to the fact that, as mentioned above, the Demodex scab is cured by the preparation in a short time, it is extremely significant that, in addition to various scabies diseases caused by Demodex, Sarcoptes (Scabies), psoroptes, concomitant secondary bacterial and especially difficult to cure skin fungus infections: herpes tonsurans, trichophytia, favus: causes of ring worm. and scabies are soon healed.
It is also important that these bacterial and fungal infections, even if they are not associated with diseases caused by mites, can be treated with great success with the preparation.
