<Desc/Clms Page number 2>

IMPROVEMENTS TO DUST SEPARATORS.
The present invention relates to improvements to dust separators, consisting of a series of tubes arranged coaxially one behind the other and being of increasingly small diameter, for the passage of the medium to be purified. Between the tubes, spaces are formed for the separated particles. The invention can be used ,. for example, in separators for flue gases. in conjunction with an air preheater in boiler hearths or similar places.
The invention is characterized by the displacement of a second medium along the exterior of the tubes in order to effect heat exchange between the two media. The separator is suitably combined such that the second medium is directed substantially axially from the tube having the larger diameter towards the tube having the smaller diameter.
The invention is described more fully below starting from an embodiment shown in the accompanying drawing.
The drawing shows a series of tubes 1, 2, 3 and 4, each having an increasingly smaller diameter and arranged coaxially one behind the other. The tubes overlap slightly with each other and, between eu%, are formed spaces 5,6 and 7. The larger tube 1 is connected to a wall 9 provided with an opening 8. In a similar manner ,, the smaller tube 4 surrounds an opening 10 provided in a wall 11.
The medium to be purified, for example flue gas, passes through the tubes from tube 1 in the direction of tube 4. By means of inclined guide flaps 12, smoke ga will be subjected to swirling or to rotating movement, which also causes the projection towards the end of the heavier particles, which separate, in order to force them to escape through the spaces 5,6 and 7 and also through the or-

openings 13 of the smaller tube 4. The purified gases will thus pass through opening 10.
Between the walls 9 and 11, a kind of chimney is formed which is divided into two passages 15 and 16 by a partition 14. Another medium, for example combustion air, is sent into the chimney in the direction. arrows. This air is also forced to pass through a tubular cylindrical chamber or cone 17 outside of tubes 1 to 4.
The combustion air is thus preheated by the tubes 1 to 4 which can be provided with elements enlarging the surface, such as fins 18. The particles discharging from the spaces 5, 6, 7 and through the openings 13 and containing particles. nqn burnt particles are carried away by the air flow towards the hearth. Air can also flow countercurrently, although the direction of flow shown in the drawing is preferred as the air will facilitate the separation of impurities by the action of the ejector.
The separator described above has significant advantages.
The separator can be arranged in a place where the temperature of the gas is higher than is usually the case, because the tubes 1 to 4 are cooled by the air passing outside. The cooling of the separator also causes a decrease in the pressure drop of the gas and thus a better efficiency of the separator is achieved. In addition, a better separation effect is achieved because the viscosity of the gas is lowered by the temperature drop. An important advantage is that special air preheaters can be completely or partially replaced by the apparatus described which itself comprises both a separator and a preheater.
The invention is not limited to the constructional details shown and described above, as regards the number of separating tubes or the method of guiding the air or the construction of the separator or under conditions. other reports.
