<Desc/Clms Page number 2>
batterie BAT.
<Desc/Clms Page number 3>

IMPROVEMENTS TO TRACTION AND ELECTRICAL CONTROL SYSTEMS.
The present invention relates to electric traction and control systems.
In systems with several electric motors, it is desirable to be able to connect these at will in series or in parallel to the generator. The passage from the series or series-parallel connection to the parallel connection can be done manually or electrically, and the subsequent control of the electric motors can be done by a regulator driven by the combustion engine or the like.
If one of the electric motors fails or is short-circuited, this motor must be switched off and it follows that care must be taken to ensure that the remaining motors do not receive excessive current and do not fall. - not damaged in any way.
According to the present invention, an electric traction system of this type comprises several shutdown switches, one for each electric motor, the actuation of one of these switches automatically placing all the other electric motors in parallel with each other. and in series with an overload current relay which takes over, in order to exert control, on the regulator driven by the combustion engine.
The invention will be described below, in a particular embodiment, with reference to the appended drawing given by way of example.
The drawing shows a Diesel engine E which drives a generator G. This has an excitation winding powered by a BF battery, one end of which is earthed by a connection 5 and the other end is connected. , '.. @ @ by a connection 3, an excitation rheostat FR and a connection 1, to a

BAT battery. The regulation of the excitation rheostat is controlled by a GOV regulator which also controls a fuel regulator F. The GOV regulator is driven by the Diesel engine and subjected to the control of an OS solenoid which takes precedence over it.
The generator G sends current to the traction motors M1, M2, M3. M4 and comprises SS series excitation windings and SF shunt, which are connected, by the coil of an overload relay 'OL, to each of the motors M1., M2, M3, M4. The generator G supplies the motors M1, M2, M3, M4 by the power circuits shown in large lines; system control circuits are shown in thin lines.
Between the overload relay OL and the motor M1 there is a pair of contacts of a parallel run relay P1.
M2, M3 and M4 motors have a similar relay for parallel operation.,. P2, P3 and P4 respectively. In the direct connection of the generator to the motor M1 is an off switch CO1, and there is a corresponding switch C02, C03 and C04 for each of the respective motors M2, M3 and M4. A series run relay S14 is connected between the motors M1 and M4 and another series run relay S23 is connected between the motors M2 and M3. The series run relays S14 and S23 are controlled by a "series" switch S and the parallel run relays Pl to P4 by a "parallel" switch Po The switch S is connected by respective connections. ves 49 and 51 to relays S14 and S23 and, via connections 47, 45 and 1, to the BAT battery.
Each disconnection switch is connected, by a connection 9, to a pair of deactivation relays CORI and COR2. A contact of the relay COR2 is connected by a connection 41 to a contact of the overload relay OL and its other contact is connected, by a connection 43, to the control coil of the overload solenoid OS.
All relays and switches are shown in their normal positions and to start the locomotive which is powered by Diesel engine E, engines M1., M2, M3 and M4 are connected in parallel pairs of two series engines. The M1 and M4 motors are connected in series, the M2 and M3 motors too, and the M1-M4 and M2-M3 pairs are connected in parallel by closing switch S. The coils of relays S14 and S23 are thus supplied by the normally closed contacts of the CORl disconnection relay and connections 1, 45, 47, 49 and 51. As the speed of the motors increases, the increasing back EMF limits the maximum speed possible with this connection. series-parallel.
The motors M1, M2, M3 and M4 are then all put in parallel on the generator G, by opening the switch S and by closing the switch P which supplies the coils of the relays P1, P2, P3 and P4 via connections 1 to 23 and the group of normally closed contacts for locking and controlling the cut-off switches COl, C02, CO3, C04 and by connections 24, 25, 27, 29, 31, 33 and 35.
Under abnormal running conditions, 'such as when an engine is short-circuited, in order to allow the locomotive to continue, the faulty engine shut-off switch is manually opened, which opens the control contacts. power of the latter so as to disconnect the motor from the power circuit, closes the normally open control contacts and opens the normally closed control contacts of this disconnection switch.
Opening the normally closed control contacts of any disconnection switch causes the series connection to the parallel contactor coil to be cut off for the motor to be switched off, so as to avoid contactor coil power supply.
The closing of the normally open control switches of any of the cut-off switches COl, C02, C03 and C04, bypasses the parallel switch P through these contacts and through conductor 24 or any pair of conductors connected in - Be the conductors 7 and 9, so as to excite the coils of the others, parallel contactors, to connect in parallel the remaining motors not switched off

circuit. 'These pairs of conductors are '25 -27 29-31 and 33-35. This also causes the energization of the coils of the COR1 and COR2 relays which close their normally open control contacts and open the normally closed control contacts of the CORl relay.
Closing the contacts of relay COR2 establishes a circuit containing the normally open control contacts of the OL overload relay and conductors 1, 45, ... 39, 41 and 4.3 .. 'to the regulator OS solenoid, which only energizes when generator G is overloaded and closes the control contacts of the OL overload relay. When the OS solenoid is energized, it attracts a core to take the step on the GOV regulator producing a prompt reduction of the power delivered to the remaining motors by the power circuit connected in parallel with the generator G of the group.
This opening of the normally closed control contacts of the CORl disconnection relay opens the connection between the BAT battery and the series switch comprising conductors 1, 45 and 47 so that the S series contactors cannot be supplied with power and cannot connect. motors in series-parallel '..
