<Desc/Clms Page number 2>

PROCESS FOR IMPROVING COAL AND BRAI-BASED AGGLOMERS,
AND FUEL AS A RESULT.
The agglomerates of semi-fat, 1/4 fat or lean charcoal and of pitch have the disadvantage of not being very solid and of giving off significant smoke when burning. It has already been proposed to transform them into harder smokeless agglomerates, by subjecting them to a distillation preceded or not by an oxidizing treatment.
The object of the invention is -on new process for the treatment of the usual agglomerates making it possible without distillation to transform them into a fuel that is more solid than the untreated agglomerates from which it comes and without fumes thanks to a modification of the nature of the volatile materials although the volatile matter content remains substantially equal before and after treatment.
This process is characterized by the following treatment phases
First phase, the agglomerates, for example in the form of balls, are subjected to rapid oxidation by a hot gaseous fluid rich in oxygen, until the temperature of the balls becomes, due to the exothermic reaction of 1 -'oxidation, equal to a temperature Tl between 200 and 400 C. The fluid can be composed of burnt gases or of water vapor, or of a mixture of the two to which air is added or oxygen in a regulated proportion.,
The temperature T1, which will in all cases be lower than the temperature To of the coal distillation, depends on the nature of the pitch and on the nature of the coal entering into the composition of the treated agglomerate.
Second phase: the agglomerates resulting from the first stage of treatment are subjected to controlled oxidation under conditions such as
<Desc / Clms Page number 2>
the heating which results from this oxidation raises the temperature of the surface of the balls to a temperature T higher than the temperature Tl (included between 230 and 4500C) but also always lower than the carbon distillation temperature and also dependent on the nature of the lagglomer. In this phase, it is possible to act on the oxygen content, on the temperature of the gaseous fluid or on both at the same time.
Third phase The agglomerates are cooled to dryness in a neutral atmosphere from T to a temperature T3 which depends on the reactivity to oxygen of the agglomerates treated, which itself depends on the nature of the carbon used and is included between 100 and 20CPC. This cooling can be as fast as you want.
Fourth phase s The agglomerates treated as above are cooled completely by exposure to air in a relatively thin layer.
This can be obtained either on an inclined platform or on a conveyor belt, or on any other mechanical means avoiding the mass effect. Complete cooling can also be activated by spraying water.
The oxidation thus carried out according to a precise heating law causes a very reactive hard crust around the agglomerates, which thickens. The agglomerates obtained, examined in sections, have the appearance of dragees with a shiny and silvery gray crust, around a matt and black gray core. The resistance of these agglomerates is higher than that of the raw agglomerates from which they originate, both to impact and abrasion. It seems that this surface hardening is due to a kind of co- kification produced by oxidation of certain organic compounds. pitch and coal.
The treated agglomerates also burn easily and without smokers, their ignition is particularly easy on account of their high surface reactivity; they are perfectly suited to domestic uses: open hearths, stoves, central heaters of small and large dimensions.
The yield of the oxidizing treatment according to the invention, that is to say the ratio of the weight of agglomerates before and after treatment, varies with the nature of the coals and pitches used, but remains very close to 100%, which is very remarkable from an economic point of view. The known methods of manufacturing smokeless agglomerates which provide for a gas and tar producing distillation, have a much lower yield of smokeless fuel.
The volatile matter content of the novel smokeless fuel according to the invention is almost equal to the initial volatile matter content of the untreated agglomerates, on the one hand because the smoker process does not involve distillation; on the other hand because if, in the oxidation reactions there is formation of CO 2 and H2O at the expense of the constituents of the agglomerates, there is also fixation of oxygen on the organic constituents of the agglomerates. As a result, the volatile matter emitted by the smoked agglomerates during their combustion in a hearth, have a H2 + 0 ratio very different from that of the volatile matter.
C those released by the constituents of the non-smoked agglomerates themselves.
As a result, the phenomena of thermal cracking of volatile materials which are responsible for the smoke during the combustion of the agglomerates no longer produce free carbon in massive quantities and the fuel burns with a beautiful bluish flame and without smoke. .
In summary, in the process according to the invention, the volatiles are conserved quantitatively but change in nature.
Analysis of the calorific value of untreated and treated agglomerates reveals that defogging only reduces the calorific value by 5 to 6% while this reduction exceeds 10% in almost all known processes where the suppression of smoke is obtained by a final distillation.
The table below gives a few non-limiting examples of the implementation of the process with agglomerates of various types.

It should be noted that the process can be implemented with very diverse types of apparatus - continuous or discontinuous apparatus; - crumbling furnaces, conveyor belt furnaces, tunnel furnaces, mechanical grate furnaces; fixed cell furnaces!) etc ...
On the other hand, the four phases of the process must be scrupulously observed, otherwise one or more of the following drawbacks would be encountered: - or the agglomerates obtained would not burn without smoke, - or they would be less solid than the raw agglomerates whose they result, - or they would enter into partial combustion during 1? one of the phases of the treatment with a decrease in the solidity of the agglomerates; - or finally they would offer a ruguese surface which would predispose them to crumbling.
It will be noted, however, that the first and the second phase of the treatment are not necessarily clearly separated 1: one from the other, the second phase being able to consist simply in a progressive slowing down of the oxidation which is the subject of the first.
It will also be noted that the pitch used for the manufacture of the agglomerates to be treated can be of any nature (pitch of coal, lignite, shale or petroleum gas).
