<Desc/Clms Page number 3>
Les deux courants dair entrant dans la chambre de combustion doivent tourner dans le même sens; si le courant d'air central arrivant par le tuyau 7 tourne en sens inverse ou ne tourne pas du tout,la flamme de- vient instable. Vair arrivant par la fente 10 suit principalement un tra- jet hélicoidal le long de la paroi de la chambre de combustion dans la di- rection de son extrémité ouverte et ne se mélange que progressivement avec les gaz de la flamme dans la chambre les particules liquides ou solides éventuellement non bràlées provenant du combustible qui se trouvent dans la masse centrale de ces gaz et qui sont projetées par la force centrifuge con- tre la paroi viennent rencontrer l'air en mouvement à cet endroit et brûlent;

'LIQUID COMBUSTIBLES' OR \ SOLID, SPRAYED COMBUSTIBLES DEVICE.
The invention relates to a device for burning a pulverized liquid or solid fuel, comprising a combustion chamber in the form of a solid of elongated revolution :, at one end of which the fuel and air are introduced, while the hot gases of the combustion come out at the other end of the room.
The object of the invention is a form of construction of this device which makes it possible to burn completely even the most difficult to burn fuels, such as residual heavy oils, without the formation of soot and with a very small excess of air. or even without any excess air.
This result is obtained in the device according to the invention. by the means by which fuel and air are introduced into the combustion chamber,
A sprayer for liquid or atomized fuel is mounted in the center of one end of the combustion chamber and is surrounded by an air inlet pipe comprising a device which causes the air to take a rotational movement and opens into the chamber , but in its periphery, there opens a second air inlet orifice in the form of an annular slot which brings in the air driven by a rotational movement in the same direction as the air which arrives in the sprayer.
The air in rotational movement aui arrives in the periphery of the chamber follows a substantially helical path along the wall of the chamber towards the open end of the chamber and during this movement it gradually takes part in the combustion; the unburned liquid or solid particles which are in the vicinity of the center of the chamber are projected by the action of centrifugal force towards the wall of the chamber and into the current of air in rotational motion along this wall , where they burn before reaching the chamber wall. The rotational movement caused by the air current flowing along the wall of the chamber has the effect of stabilizing the flame around the axis of the chamber.

In the accompanying drawing which shows in schematic form an embodiment of the invention: Figure 1 is a longitudinal section, Figure 2 is a cross section.
The combustion chamber 1 has a generally cylindrical shape. The fuel atomiser is housed in the end wall 4 and the other end of the chamber has an outlet opening or orifice 5 of reduced cross section, through which the hot combustion gases can exit the chamber. The wall of the chamber 2 is made of a material resistant to heat, for example a refractory ceramic material. The sprayer 6 of the illustrated embodiment is constructed as a pressure sprayer. for liquid fuel, but compressed air or steam can also be used to spray liquid fuel and the pulverizer can also be constructed as a pulverized fuel injector.
The apex angle of the fuel spray cone is preferably about 45. An annular air inlet pipe 7 surrounds the sprayer and comprises several helical guide fins 8 which cause the air stream passing through the pipe to take a rotational movement around the axis of the sprayer and the chamber. combustion.
A separate annular partition 9 surrounding the nozzle of the sprayer may be disposed in the pipe 7; it has a conical shape at the end of the side of the combustion chamber and causes a small fraction of the air arriving through pipe 7 to flow in the usual way into the fuel stream at the place where it has just come out of the spraying nozzle of the sprayer nozzle so as to stabilize the flame on the nozzle.
The pipe 7 only feeds part of the combustion air into the combustion chamber, the remainder enters the chamber through an annular slot 10 which goes around the chamber. This slot receives the air leaving an annular chamber 11, into which the air inlet pipe 12 opens out tangentially, FIG. 2, so that the air from this chamber as well as the air from the annular slot 10 receive a rotational movement around the axis of the chamber.
It is extremely important that the rotating air in the combustion chamber is evenly distributed over its periphery as it enters it, and for this purpose the inlet 10 has the shape of 'an uninterrupted continuous annular slot, but furthermore a partition 13 is mounted between the chamber 11 and the slot 10 and by its resistance gives the certainty that the air entering the slot 10 is evenly distributed, thus preventing an inflow. irregular air in chamber 11 gives rise to an irregular inflow of air into the combustion chamber through slit 10.
The combustion chamber has an ignition orifice 14 and a sight glass 15 for controlling the flame. When the device is in operation, the air coming from the same source arrives in the pipes 7 and 12 under a pressure of between 3 and 10 cm of water height, for example under a pressure of 6 cm of water. It is important that this air pressure remains low in order to limit the energy required for the air delivery. The applicant has found that if the air pressure in the device described above is too low, the flame becomes unstable and combustion tends to be incomplete; however, good results are obtained with an air pressure not exceeding 3 cm of water.
The more the air pressure increases, the higher the combustion capacity becomes and this capacity expressed in kcal / m3 / h already reaches under a pressure of 6 cm of water a value of 4.5 x 106 kcal / 3 / h .
The value of the resistance opposite to the circulation of air in pipes 7 and 12 is preferably chosen so as to make the quantities of air arriving in the combustion chamber by these two routes substantially equal. One of these quantities should not be more than double the other. The total quantity of air must obviously be adapted to the quantity of fuel to be burned.
<Desc / Clms Page number 3>
The two air streams entering the combustion chamber must turn in the same direction; if the central air stream arriving through pipe 7 turns in the opposite direction or does not turn at all, the flame becomes unstable. The air entering through slit 10 mainly follows a helical path along the wall of the combustion chamber in the direction of its open end and only gradually mixes with the gases of the flame in the liquid particle chamber. or possibly unburned solids originating from the fuel which are found in the central mass of these gases and which are projected by centrifugal force against the wall come into contact with the air in motion at this location and burn;
this prevents the formation of coke deposits on the wall of the combustion chamber. The linear speed of the air current directed mainly tangentially and in rotational movement along the wall can reach a few tens of meters per second.
In order for the device to function with certainty in a satisfactory manner. it is necessary to give a certain value to the ratio between the length and the diameter of the combustion chamber, this ratio may not be less than about 2 1.
