<Desc/Clms Page number 2>
D'autres détails, objets et avantages de l'invention apparaîtront au cours de la description qui va suivre et qui est faite en se référant au dessin annexé, sur lequel la demanderesse a représenté un mode de réalisation préféré de l'invention et sur lequel : la figure 1 est une vue schématique d'une chambre de traitement thermique, montrant de quelle manière la bande est supportée sur le rouleau de transporteur peur four conforme à l'invention, en vue de son passage à travers ce dernier;
<Desc/Clms Page number 3>
la figure 2 est une vue partiellement en élévation et partielle- ment en coupe transversale axiale d'un rouleau de transporteur pour four;
<Desc/Clms Page number 4>

DEVELOPMENTS; RELATING TO A CONVEYOR ROLLER, FOR OVEN.
The present invention relates to kiln conveyor rollers. It is particularly, though not exclusively, to kiln conveyor rollers around which a continuous strip of metal passes which advances through heating ovens where it is heated. The object of the invention is to produce conveyor rolls for an oven which remain smooth during prolonged use and have no harmful effect on the part which they transport in the presence of the oven atmosphere, at temperatures above 649 C, such as, for example, when annealing a ferrous strip at about 871 C, yet being relatively simple in construction, economical to manufacture and durable. superior.
In order to better explain and illustrate the invention, it will be described with reference to an oven conveyor roll passing the strip through an annealing oven.
Technicians are familiar with the difficulties encountered when using metal conveyor elements in heating furnaces. For example, the conveyor rolls used in continuous strip annealing furnaces of metal tend to collect accretions of material from the strip which formed bumps on the strip passing over them: or around them. is especially serious when processing steels with a high silicon content and other steels requiring high annealing temperatures.
The phenomenon of the formation of accretions is complex and is influenced by the tension of the belt passing around the rollers, the composition of the belt driven by the rollers, the composition as well as the temperature of the oven atmosphere. and, finally, the nature of the surface of the roll. The problem is similar to that of handling sheet metal in annealing furnaces on supports or roller tables and which is described in US Pat. No. 1,951,766, where it is described. give a solution.
<Desc / Clms Page number 2>
This patent deals with the use of refractory inserts, for example, silicon carbide inserts in furnace conveyor elements, the inserts coming into contact with the part passing through the furnace. Although no oxide coating forms on the silicon carbide inserts and these rollers are satisfactory for annealing sheets, it has been found that in annealing furnaces a strip of continuous, in which the strip is wound under tension around the rollers and especially when annealing a high silicon steel strip, a certain amount of accretion forms on the silicon carbide inserts. ,
the supply and the installation of the refractory inserts involve a lot of work and a significant expense.
In U.S. Patent Applications 65,384 filed December 15, 1948 and 71,886 filed January 21, 1949, kiln conveyor elements have been described having metal bodies provided with a coating of iron. These oxide coatings prevent the formation of accretions on the elements of the conveyor.
Although the conveyor elements of these applications have been found to be satisfactory, particularly in strongly oxidizing atmospheres or else in the lower ranges of web tension, the applicant has devised a conveyor roll which is far superior to them. The conveyor roller according to the invention has an improved property of preventing the formation of accretions not only over the silicon carbide inserts described in the aforementioned United States Patent No. 1,951,766, but again with respect to the oxide coated carrier elements described in the above applications.
Further, the improved conveyor roller according to the invention has a significantly increased strength over the amount of expensive high temperature alloy used in its manufacture.
The improved oven conveyor roller according to the invention has a carbonaceous part coming into contact with the workpiece. This part of the insulation coming into contact with the workpiece may include graphite particles bonded together. The Applicant preferably uses a massuite of graphite particles and a binder which may consist of one. bituminous binder, such as tar, binding the particles together. The body of the roller is preferably made of metal, a high temperature resistant alloy of known composition being preferably used.
The improved oven conveyor roller according to the invention may include a metallic body to which a carbonaceous sleeve fits. The metal body of the roller may be a hollow body made of a metal alloy, an alloy resistant to high temperatures of the type used for the manufacture of conveyor elements intended for use in furnaces in which high temperatures prevail,
being normally used The carbonaceous sleeve preferably closely surrounds the body when using a roller in order to provide a surface contacting the workpiece and to strengthen the structure of the body The roller desirably comprises a hollow metal body , a cylindrical mass of baked graphite particles and binder tightly surrounding the body.
Other details, objects and advantages of the invention will become apparent from the description which follows and which is given with reference to the appended drawing, in which the Applicant has shown a preferred embodiment of the invention and in which FIG. 1 is a schematic view of a heat treatment chamber, showing how the strip is supported on the conveyor roll for the oven according to the invention, with a view to its passage through the latter;
<Desc / Clms Page number 3>
Figure 2 is a view partially in elevation and partially in axial cross section of an oven conveyor roll;
Figure 3 is an end view of the roller shown in Figure la
Figure 1 shows a furnace chamber, designated as a whole by the reference 20, through which is drawn a strip 21, the strip passing over a series of rollers. the upper part of the oven and under a series of rollers at the lower part, all the rollers preferably being of uniform construction and each of them being designated by the numeral 22; the structure of the rollers is shown in Figures 2 and 3. The rollers 22 may be driven or may rotate freely as the web is drawn into the chamber. The chamber is internally heated by suitable heating means, for example electric heating elements (not shown).
Referring more particularly to Figures 2 and 3, it can be seen that the oven conveyor roller shown therein comprises a metallic body designated as a whole by the reference 2 and a sleeve 3 in graphite. The roller body 2 comprises a tubular element 4., two shaft ends 59, two drive rings 6 and two closing plates 7, the shaft ends 5 being filled with heat insulating material 8.
The tubular member 4, the shaft ends 5, the drive rings 6 and the closure plates 7 may be of a suitable ferrous or non-ferrous alloy resistant to high temperatures, such as that used for the manufacture of the conveyor members. for oven.
The tubular element 4 comprises projections or projections 9, spaced axially on its circumference which form supports for the sleeve 3? and a vent 10 communicating the interior of the tubular insulation 4 and the exterior of this member to allow hot air from the tubular member to escape when the roll is heated and centered. air coming from outside into the tubular member when the latter cools and the heated air contained therein contracts.
Shaft ends 5 have cylindrical portions 11 fitting into the ends of tubular member 4, tapered portions 12, and cylindrical end portions 13 and 14, relatively large in diameter and small in diameter. The roller can be mounted in any conventional manner allowing its rotationo
The ends of tubular insulation 4 are welded to the ends of shafts 5 by welds 15. The closure plates 7 are welded to the ends of shafts 5 by welds 16.
The drive rings 6 are welded to the tubular insulation 4 by welds 17, but one of the drive rings is only applied and welded to the tubular insulation when the sleeve 3 is placed on it. -cio Each of the drive rings 6 comprises a series of circumferentially spaced projections 18, extending radially and axially, and each of which enters a slot 19 provided for this purpose in one of the ends of the sleeve 3,
the sleeve being thus made integral with the roller body so that the latter behaves like a whole
The sleeve 3 constitutes the part of the roller coming into contact with the part to be treated and its cylindrical outer surface constitutes the surface of the roller coming into contact with the part to be treated. The sleeve is graphite. Preferably, finely divided graphite particles are bonded with a suitable binder such as, for example, a bi-tuminous material such as tar, are compressed into the form of the hollow cylinder shown and are cults. The slots 19 may be molded into the sleeve during its formation or may be scored after it.
The sleeve 3 can, if desired, be made of amorphous carbon instead of being graphitized. An amorphous carbon sleeve can be produced by baking in an oven a mixture of anthracite, petroleum coke and pitch. can transform an amorphous carbon sleeve into graphite into
<Desc / Clms Page number 4>
subsequently heating it in a graphitization furnace to transform the carbon into graphiteo
When the parts are cold, the outer diameter of the circumferential protrusions 9 is slightly smaller than the inner diameter of the sleeve 3, so that the sleeve can be easily engaged on the tubular insulation. However, when the roller is heated,
the expansion of the tubular insulation results in a tight fit between the tubular member and the sleeve, whereby the latter tightly surrounds the body of the roller. This is an important feature of the improved roller according to the invention. At high annealing temperatures, for example the temperatures at which silicon steel sheets are annealed, graphite is more mechanically strong than any other known high temperature resistant alloy and a sleeve, such as the sleeve. 3, contributes significantly to the rigidity and robustness of the roller.
If we take a given desired outer diameter of the roll and compare the graphite roll shown in the drawing with the oxide coated rollers of the aforementioned patent applications, it is seen that, while in the rollers coated with oxide, the metal body of the roller has almost the full diameter of the roller and has the widest possible section modulus, allowing the use of a relatively thin wall for the metal body of the roller, in the roller shown in the drawing, although the sectional modulus of the metal body is much smaller, this is more than compensated for by the reinforcing effect of the wall or sleeve of graphite which allows the use of a body or element tubular with very thin wall.
As stated above, when the roll is brought to the temperature at which it is used when it comes into contact and advances the workpiece through the annealing furnace, the metal body of the roll expands and forms a tight fit with the inside of the sleeve 3, which achieves the strengthening effect of the sleeve.
In addition to the mechanical advantage presented by the structure just described9, it has been observed that the graphite surface coming into contact with the workpiece is greater than silicon carbide and is also greater than surfaces coated with oxide. described in the aforementioned patent applications when it comes to preventing the formation of accretions, so that the roller according to the invention has both exceptional strength and long use in view of the quantity of material used for its manufacture and allows to obtain superior results o In reality, even for high web tensions,
the surface of the graphite coated rollers according to the invention coming into contact with the workpiece appear to remain smooth in use and may even be somewhat improved and polished by continued wear, which is absolutely. the opposite of the behavior of the other rollers offered and used. It is understood that the atmosphere of the furnace in which the roller object of the invention is used must not be excessively oxidizing, for example so as to rapidly consume the graphite envelope; on the other hand, slow oxidation only gradually reduces the diameter of the roll, without having any other detrimental effect, and does not destroy the other advantages offered by the use of graphite casings.
Although a preferred embodiment of the present invention has been described and shown, it is evident that various changes and improvements can be made to it without thereby departing from the spirit of the invention. .
