<Desc/Clms Page number 3>

TRACK DIRECTION INDICATOR.
The present invention relates to a travel direction indicator for vehicles which steer with the aid of a handlebar, in particular for motorcycles, mopeds, bicycles with auxiliary engines, scooters and bicycles.
It is in fact difficult for the user of this type of vehicle when he changes direction to indicate his new direction by extending his hand, while his two hands are occupied in maneuvering the vehicle. There is also a danger, both for the driver and for the road users following him, which results from the fact that often, in the dark, these signals are not noticed.
It has been proposed to install mobile signaling devices similar to those of automobiles on this type of vehicle. However, these have the drawback that they get dirty very quickly, are very difficult to handle and too complicated to assemble.
In accordance with the invention, light sources, particularly in the form of electric lamps, are arranged near both ends of the handlebars, and clearly show both oncoming vehicles or persons as well as to those following and those on the sides, the intention of the driver of the vehicle and the direction of travel he has chosen.
In order to make the planned change of direction also visible from the rear or to reinforce the indication, a direction indicator, bearing signals indicating the two directions, arrows for example, is fixed in accordance with the invention, to remains on the rear mudguard of the vehicle, for example below the number plate, in combination with it or in a separate location: either of these signals will be illuminated by the 'intermediate-a suitable bond by

a hand switch mounted on the steering unit. It is advantageous if the signal lamps attached to the handlebars are actuated by the selected hand switch at the same time as the direction signals mounted at the rear.
In the accompanying drawing, an embodiment of the new direction indicator has been shown by way of example.
FIG. 1 represents a motorcycle equipped with the device according to the invention, front view.
Figure 2 shows the same motorcycle seen from the rear.
FIG. 3 shows one end of the handlebars of the motorcycle equipped with the device according to the invention.
Figure 4 is a longitudinal section of Figure 3.
Figure 5 is a view of the direction indicator mounted on the rear of the vehicle.
In Figure 1, reference numerals 1, 2 denote the two ends of the handlebars which, according to the invention, are to serve as direction indicators.
In figure 2, there is shown, in addition to the number plate 4 fixed to the rear mudguard 3 of the motorcycle, the direction indicator board 5 fixed below the plate 4.
In Figure 3, each end of the handlebar carries a cap 6, removable hollow and mounted for example on a thread; this cap has windows 7, 8 at its top and on its front and rear sides to allow light to pass through. The cap 6 can be fixed to the branch 10 of the handlebar 11, by means of a countersunk screw 9.
In FIG. 4, an adjusting tube 12 for adjusting the (fuel) supply is located in the rubber casing 10, and can rotate integrally with it. Inside this tube, we can see the end of the handlebar 11. A metal spacer 13 is engaged on the tubes 11 and 12 and the cap 14 is fixed on this spacer 13 by a locking screw 15. The cap 14 has glazed openings or windows 16, 17, 18 which may optionally be protected by a mesh. Inside the cap 14, there is an electric lamp 19, the base 20 of which penetrates a metal socket 21. The fixing in this sleeve is ensured by a lug 22 carried by the base of the lamp and which hooks into a groove 23 of the socket.
The socket 21 is firmly fixed to the part 13. On the base 24 of the lamp which is isolated from the base 20 in the usual way, the contact button 25 rests on the rear rod 26 of which an adjustable screw 27 firmly fixes the cable 29 on said posterior rod 26. Furthermore, the contact button 25,26 is insulated in a ring 28a of porcelain or similar material. In front of the rod 26 of the contact button, is the end 29 of the cable which will possibly be brought into contact with the rod 26 by the flashing light of the device to indicate a change of direction.
The insulating tube 28 is located in a sleeve 30 provided with an external thread 31 which carries an annular nut 32. This annular nut 32 compresses the rubber sleeve 33 against the part 13 so that the sleeve 30 in which is mounted the contact button 25, 26, is firmly pressed against its seat in the part 13.
FIG. 5 shows, on a larger scale, the driving direction indicator 5 mounted on the rear mudguard of a motorcycle, with a reflector or stop signal 35 and indicator arrows 36 and 37 arranged at the ends. two sides of the reflector and appearing as openings, with or without windows.
<Desc / Clms Page number 3>
The circuit supplying the flashing light intended to indicate the direction of travel is mounted so that the arrow 36 lights up at the same time as the flashing light 1 which is located at the left end of the handlebars, while the arrow 37 lights up at the same time as the flashing light 2 located at the right end of the handlebars. Each of the flashing lights of the driving direction indicator 5 located at the rear therefore corresponds to the market direction indicator mounted on the same side on the handlebars.
The invention which has just been described can be modified and carried out in many different ways without departing from the scope of the present invention.
For example, the mechanism which controls the advancement of the end 29 of the cable and brings the latter into contact with the base of the lamp or with the rod 26 of a contact button disposed in the interval, can be established and operated in any way. One could also securely attach the contact button 25, 26 to the cable 29 and operate the mechanism on this contact button to produce the correct illumination.
It is also possible, to produce the flashing light, to connect the contact fork electrically and to control it, for example, by pressing a contact button or by rotating a contact ring, or in any case similar.
The insertion into the sleeve 21 of the lamp 19 of a luminous cap can be effected at will by means of a bayonet connection and the contact pin 22 is shaped and arranged so as to hold the light solidly. lamp by its elasticity.
Instead of the three windows 16, 17, 18 of the cap, we can have openings for lighting, either uncovered or lined with a transparent manner, for example with a colored artificial material, installed in a similar way. that the lighting power will be increased and concentrated by a particular refraction of light.
The cap 14 can likewise be mounted on the insert 13, by means of a bayonet closure or in any other similar manner. In addition, between the cap 14 and the spacer 13 it is possible to place a rubber seal 38 so that the device will be well protected against bad weather. Control of the flashing light can usefully be effected by means of a relay. '
The rear-mounted direction indicator 5 may, if desired, be in the form of an elongated casing, the side walls of which are formed by a plate 39. The entire casing may be made of sheet metal, of a light metal, of an artificial material, etc.
The windows 36 and 37 can also be made of a colored artificial material and made so as to cause a particular refraction of the light.
It is possible to divide the housing by intermediate partitions 40, 41 into different compartments so that the lamps intended to illuminate the arrows 36, 37 and also the stop signal 35 are separated from each other and the light of a lamp can only act on the opening which corresponds to it.
The travel direction indicator which has just been described can be set both to produce a flashing light at the ends of the handlebars and to give it a stable light which will, for example, be controlled by hand by means of a suitable switch, a button, a handle or a ring ... etc ... and which will remain on until the contact is again interrupted by hand.
Devices which serve to cut off at will the current which feeds the lamps, for example an ignition button, a joystick and the like can usefully be fixed on the handlebars itself, preferably on the handles or beside those. here, so that the motorcyclist or cyclist can maneuver them without leaving the handles.
