<Desc/Clms Page number 2>
<Desc/Clms Page number 3>
C = 0,10 %, Cr = 1 %, Mo = 0,5 % la 2eme couche:
C = 0,10 %, Cr = 0, %, Mo = 0,5 % la 3ème couche:
C = 0,10 %, Cr = 0,5 %, Mo = 0,25 % la 4ème couche et les suivantes :
C < 0,10%

PROCESS FOR OBTAINING SEALS FOR: HIGH PRESSURE AND HIGH: TEMPERATURE APPLIANCES.
In high pressure and high temperature devices, one of the major concerns of the manufacturer and the user is the resistance of the seals in service.
-It is known that any metal subjected to fatigue at high temperature deforms continuously. Consequently, the tightening due to the bolts or studs is gradually reduced and there is relaxation of the assembly.
If the nuts are not tightened in time, the seal will leak and often be suddenly destroyed.
On the other hand, the seal constitutes a weak point, sensitive to temperature variations, to capacitors, to corrosion, and the failure of which can shut down an entire installation.
To remedy these drawbacks, various solutions have hitherto been devised which all boil down to the following two: A. Autoclave seals, in which the pressure on the seal is ensured by the internal pressure of the fluid.
B. - Assembly by welding. This solution is perfect from the point of view of sealing. It is becoming more and more general for pipe assemblies, but its use in a valve leads to a very serious practical drawback, namely the impossibility for the user to disassemble the device, to overhaul it and to repair it. ride up.
Indeed, as it has been carried out up to now, the weld serves both for strength and for sealing and is of great thickness; in some devices it reaches 100 mm. To dismantle a device, it is therefore necessary to remove the weld by machining on a machine tool that is all the more powerful as the device is larger. In addition, this operation makes it necessary to remove the apparatus from the piping and if, as is becoming common practice, the apparatus is welded to the piping, the work is considerable.
The reassembly of the device after an overhaul is no less difficult.
<Desc / Clms Page number 2>
cile, on the contrary. In fact, the bodies of high-temperature apparatus must be made of special alloy steel, the welding of which is particularly delicate and requires precise heat treatments. This work is beyond the possibilities of the user and can practically only be done by the manufacturer of the device.
However, it is desirable that a valve can be dismantled, checked, cleaned and possibly rectified and run-in without dismantling the piping.
The object of the present invention is to reconcile all the advantages and the perfection from the point of view of tightness of a welded assembly with those resulting from easy disassembly and reassembly, which can be achieved by leaving the the device in place on the piping, with the normal means and personnel of a maintenance workshop.
This is achieved by separating the two issues of internal pressure resistance and sealing.
On the one hand, the resistance to internal pressure is ensured by a mechanical assembly means, for example a robust trapezoidal thread, but which could also have another shape appropriate to the forces involved.
For example, in some cases it might be beneficial to use a bayonet type assembly.
This assembly is made between two parts, in this case the body and the cover of the valve, in special steel suitable for the pressure and the working temperature, this steel being heat treated in a suitable manner.
On the other hand, the seal is ensured by a relatively light weld, since it is subjected only to very low mechanical forces. This welding is carried out on an area of carbon steel of extra-soft grade; it is therefore very easy to produce, this metal being particularly weldable without special precautions by an ordinary welder.
The extra-mild steel zone has a width such that the temperature gradient caused by the welding does not influence the heat treatment of the two special alloy steel parts.
The extra-mild steel part is assembled with the special steel part in an indestructible way, during the construction of the apparatus, by a welding or fusion deposition process. After this assembly, the assembly undergoes a heat treatment which gives the special steel its optimum qualities, but has no appreciable effect on the extra-mild steel.
The execution of the sealing weld, either after assembly of the device by the manufacturer, or after servicing by the user, does not require any heat treatment.
It can quickly be removed with a portable grinding wheel or chisel, given its small section, which allows the dismantling of the two parts. To make this disassembly easier, it is planned to color the assembly surfaces in whole or in part, or to use some other means of protection liable to prevent seizing and oxidation: metallization, nickel plating, nitriding. Or other.
In order to bring out the above description more clearly, the appended drawings represent, by way of explanation and not by way of limitation, two variant embodiments of the process envisaged and the application to a high pressure and high temperature valve.
For this purpose, FIG. 1, is a partial elevational section through an assembly of two parts of a high pressure, high temperature apparatus showing the application of the contemplated method in one embodiment.
Fig. 2 represents a view similar to FIG. 1 showing an alternative embodiment of the method.
<Desc / Clms Page number 3>
Fig. 3 shows the application of the method applied according to FIG. 1 to a high pressure and high temperature valve represented by a partial elevation section .......
Referring to 'Fig. 1,, 1 represents the part in special steel intended to withstand the forces, assembled by a thread 17 to another part 2, also in special steel, of a high pressure and high temperature apparatus. 10 is shown the plane of the joint along which parts 1 and 2 are applied to each other and whose absolute sealing must be ensured. In parts 1 respectively 2 before their assembly, the easily weldable steel rings or rings 3 respectively 4 are fitted together, which are welded there at 7 respectively at ¯8 and then externally at 5 respectively at 6.
After heat treatment and completion of machining, parts 1 and 2 are engaged by thread 17 ensuring resistance to mechanical forces, then welding at 9 with a torch or arc. electrical, the outer edges of the rings 3 and 4 which ensures the absolute tightness of the seal.
In Fig. 2, the special steel parts 11 and 12 of an apparatus, receive on either side of the seal, 10, a ring formed by the depositing with an electric arc or a torch of a filler metal in several successive layers such as 13 respectively 14 of an intermediate weldable steel. diary on which then takes place the deposition of other layers 15 respectively 16 of a weldable steel for example extra-soft. It goes without saying that the layers 13 and 15 respectively 14 and 16 can all be produced by means of a weldable steel of the same type.
They can also be used with different filler metals from one layer to another, so as to have a progressive variation in the nature of the steel from the special steel of the body of parts 1 and 2. up to the area of the seal 9 made of extra-soft carbon steel.
For example, if the special steel is of grade: C = 0.18%, Cr = 1%, Mo = 0.6%, Va = 0.2%, the first coat can be of the grade: '
C = 0.10%, Cr = 1%, Mo = 0.5% the 2nd layer:
C = 0.10%, Cr = 0,%, Mo = 0.5% the 3rd layer:
C = 0.10%, Cr = 0.5%, Mo = 0.25% the 4th layer and the following ones:
C <0.10%
After deposition of successive layers, the appropriate heat treatment is applied to the assembly, which is then finished machining.
During service, the forces due to the internal pressure are supported by the special steel parts, while sealing is ensured by welding on very mild steel which only undergoes minimal forces.
The inevitable deformations due to the creep of the metal at high temperature have no influence on the tightness, because the weld on mild steel can deform and follow the slow deformations of special steel without inconvenience.
