<Desc/Clms Page number 2>

PISTON EQUIPPED WITH AN OPEN ANNULAR GROOVE: ON SIDE WALL.
The invention relates to a piston provided with an annular groove open on its side wall, in which the part of the piston between the annular groove and the active chamber that the said piston influences, must be kept free of excess lubricant. , the piston being provided with one or more piston rings.
According to the invention, the part of the piston which must be kept free of excess lubricant, and which is on the side of the annular groove facing the active enclosure, has a smaller diameter than the part of the piston. on the other side of this annular groove where lubricant may be found, while the side walls of the annular groove are directed towards the part of the piston wall which must be kept free of excess lubricant and the ring piston which is located closest to the annular groove is designed as a scraper which exerts its effect when the piston moves away from the active chamber.
The invention makes it possible to reduce the transport of lubricant along the wall of a piston which moves in a cylinder. It has been found that in the hitherto known forms of piston construction, a fairly large quantity of lubricant is transported to the active chamber influenced by the piston. This lubricant gets into the active chamber, which in some cases can be harmful. This is the case, for example, when the piston influences the active chamber of a hot gas piston machine.
In this case, the lubricant can be deposited in the heat exchangers and in the recovery of the machine, which can affect the performance of the machine. However, in other machines as well, for example in diesel engines, compressors and pumps, the penetration of lubricant into the active chamber can cause trouble.
To obviate this drawback or at least to reduce it significantly, the Applicant has proposed to give the part of the piston which
<Desc / Clms Page number 2>
is on one side of the annular groove and which must be kept free of excess lubricant, a diameter smaller than that of the portion, of the piston wall which is on the other side of 'this groove and which may include lubricant the whole so that the side walls of the annular groove are directed towards the part of the wall of the piston which is to be kept free of excess lubricant. In general, this form of construction gives complete satisfaction. However, the Applicant has observed that, in the case of too great an influx of oil into the annular groove, the latter sometimes no longer meets its purpose.
This drawback can be overcome by making the piston ring which is closest to the annular groove as a scraper, exerting its effect when the piston moves away from the active chamber. Thanks to this form of construction, the supply of lubricant to the piston rings can be overabundant, since a scraper located in front of the piston rings is superfluous and it has been found that, despite the pumping effect of these rings, the scraper which is located between the annular groove and the piston rings, fulfills its function suitably.
In an advantageous embodiment of the invention, this scraper consists of a piston ring with a conical outer surface and the part with a small diameter is located on the side of the active chamber which must be kept free of excess lubricant.
In conventional forms of construction, there are generally openings either in the piston ring, or in the piston wall, or in the two openings which serve to drain the lubricant. In the form of construction according to the invention, these openings are not essential. The scraper can be formed by a solid piston segment which nevertheless has a scraper edge.
The description which will follow with reference to the accompanying drawing, given. by way of nonlimiting example, will make it clear how the invention can be implemented, the particularities which emerge both from the text and from the drawing, of course, forming part of said invention.
The figure schematically shows an embodiment of a piston according to the invention. The piston 1 moves in the cylinder 2. The active surface 3 of this piston influences the enclosure 4 which is, for example, the active chamber of a hot gas piston machine. The lubricant is supplied to the lower part of the piston. The reciprocating movement of the piston drives this lubricant towards the active chamber 4. In the absence of special arrangements, this lubricant would enter the active chamber. The piston comprises the usual rings 5. To prevent the transport of the lubricant towards the active chamber, the piston body has an annular groove 6. The side walls 7 and 8 of this groove are directed towards the part 9 of the piston wall. which should be kept free of any excess lubricant.
The diameter of this part 9 is smaller than that of the part 10 of the piston wall on which there may be excess lubricant. The diameter of the part 9 is smaller by an amount such that the wall of the piston can no longer touch the wall of the cylinder in this place, possibly covered with a film of lubricant. Under the annular groove 6 is a scraper 11. This exerts its scraping effect when the piston moves away from the active chamber 4. In this construction example, the scraper 11 is designed as a normal piston ring. , but with a conical outer surface 12, the part of the ring with the smallest diameter being on the side of the active chamber 4. In this form of construction, the wall of the piston or the scraper are therefore not perforated to evacuate the scraped lubricant. .
It has been found that, in the form of construction of the invention, the distance between the annular groove 6 and the scraper segment 11 is of secondary importance, and has no effect on the correct operation of the device.
