<Desc/Clms Page number 2>

ADVANCED FANS.
The present invention relates to fans for relatively hot gaseous media.
When a fan is used to blow relatively hot gases, for example gases brought to a temperature of the order of 4000 F or more, the heat from the rotor of the fan is transmitted along the shaft. of the latter and causes the expansion of this tree.
This gives rise to lubrication difficulties, while the expansion of the fan shaft can damage the bearing of this shaft.
According to the present invention, an auxiliary fan, arranged to draw in cold air is mounted on the main fan shaft between the main fan rotor and an adjacent bearing, so as to allow the removal by said auxiliary fan of " heat absorbed by the main fan shaft.
To ensure good heat conduction between the shaft of the main fan and the auxiliary fan, the latter must be provided with a means which fits firmly on the shaft, so as to establish with the latter a good metal-to-metal contact.
The means in question is preferably of substantial mass and has a relatively long passage in which the shaft of the main fan extends, so as to present an adequate contact surface for removing heat from said shaft.
When the main fan is mounted directly on the shaft of an electric motor, by which it is driven, the auxiliary fan is molded between the main fan rotor and the electric motor, so as to be between the fan rotor main and adjacent motor bearing.
<Desc / Clms Page number 2>
The auxiliary fan is preferably enclosed in a suitable housing so as to isolate it from the rotor of the main fan; the inlet openings in the housing are of. preferably, provided near the hub of the auxiliary fan and directed axially, while the outlet openings are preferably provided near the outer ends of the fins.
When the main fan rotor is mounted directly on the electric motor shaft, the auxiliary fan may be surrounded on one side by a plate attached to the end of the motor and on the other side by a secured housing member , at its periphery, to said plate; the outlet openings may be formed in said plate, so that the air discharged by the auxiliary fan is blown onto the motor housing.
The invention is described below, by way of example, with reference to the accompanying drawing, which shows, in elevation and after partial section, a fan assembly driven by an electric motor.
In the arrangement shown in the drawing, a main fan rotor 1 is mounted on a fan shaft 2 as an extension of the armature shaft of a. electric motor 3, which shaft is supported by ball bearings 4 and 5.
An auxiliary fan rotor 6 is mounted on the shaft 2, between the rotor 1 and the bearing 5.
It will be noted that the hub 7 of the auxiliary fan rotor 6 has a substantial mass and has a central passage of substantial length, considering that the auxiliary fan rotor is relatively small and light in construction, compared to the rotor 1 of the. main fan.
The casing 8 of the electric motor is formed by a plate 9, which extends radially and which can also be mounted separately from the motor casing, but is advantageously secured to this casing.
A housing 10 for the rotor 1 of the main fan and a housing element II for the rotor 6 of the auxiliary fan are secured to the plate 9.
The rotor 6 of the auxiliary fan is able to pass cold air, independently of the rotor 1 of the main fan, through holes 12 made in the side of the motor housing and through holes 13 made in 1-'end of the motor housing. The discharge from the rotor 6 of the auxiliary fan exits through openings 14 formed in the plate 9. Thus, the air current passing through the auxiliary fan is almost independent of the current passing through the main fan.
Thanks to the thermal conduction through the hub 7 of the rotor 6 of the auxiliary fan, the cold air flow passing through the latter fan is able to cool the part 15 of the shaft, which is immediately adjacent to the part 16 of the shaft, where the latter is supported in the bearing 5. The particular position of the openings 14 made in the plate 9 allows the discharge of the auxiliary fan to pass over the casing of the electric motor.
The direction of the current through the main fan is indicated by the arrows 17, while the direction of the current through the auxiliary fan is indicated by the arrows 18,.
The fan 1 is of a well-known construction in which the fins 19 are fixed, at their opposite ends, to annular end rings or plates 20, 21, the ring 20 being fixed to the hub 32.
As for the auxiliary fan, it is of a lighter construction, in which a plate 23, which extends radially outwards from the hub 7, carries fins 24. These types of fans are
<Desc / Clms Page number 3>
well known and are therefore only illustrated schematically in the accompanying drawing.
