<Desc/Clms Page number 2>
Fig.4 est une coupe par A-A de Fig.3,
Cet
<Desc/Clms Page number 3>

ADVANCED FANS, ESPECIALLY FANS WORKING IN GASEOUS ATMOSPHERES AT VERY HIGH TEMPERATURE
In fans or equivalent devices, such as agitators, vacuum cleaners, etc., intended for the stirring of gas or fumes, the temperature of which exceeds 400 0, and can reach 1000 C, the heat of these gases is transmitted by conduction along the 'shaft of the device to the bearing, which is thus exposed to rapid destruction, in particular as a result of insufficient lubrication.
To avoid this inconvenience, it has already been proposed to wedge on the fan shaft, before the bearing, loss discs or fins, which radiate the heat while maintaining the shaft, at the location of the bearing, at an acceptable temperature. In the same vein, a small additional fan was actuated by the fan shaft, which blows fresh air on a loss disk wedged on the shaft, upstream of this bearing. The cooling effect is thus increased, but it certainly remains insufficient in the case where the gases or fumes reach a temperature of 500 C to 1000 C.
The object of the present invention is an arrangement, which ensures normal operation of the fan, even at such high temperatures, so that ordinary lubricant can be used. According to the invention, this result is essentially ob-
<Desc / Clms Page number 2>
held by the fact that the ball bearing (s) of the bearing are wedged, not directly on the fan shaft, but on a sleeve surrounding this shaft and which is made integral with it only by ribs or any other suitable device , so as to allow air circulation between the liner and the shaft. This air circulation is advantageously caused by a small auxiliary fan actuated by the shaft of the fan itself.
The drawing, appended to this specification, shows, by way of example, two embodiments of the invention.
Fig.I is an axial section through an improved fan according to the invention.
Fig. 2 is a partial section through the outer end of the fan shaft.
Fig.3 is an axi.ale section through an alternative construction of the fan.
Fig. 4 is a section through A-A of Fig. 3,
In the fans shown in Fig. I and 3, the rotor 1 is wedged on the shaft 2 and rotates in an enclosure 3, stirring the gases whose temperature can exceed 500 C.
To prevent the ball bearings 4 from heating up, which would inevitably occur if they were wedged directly on the shaft 2, a special sleeve 5 is placed around the latter, on which the bearings 4 are wedged. This sleeve 5 is driven. in the movement of the shaft 2, thanks to. ribs such as 6 (Fig.4) provided on the shaft 2, and which thus form between the latter and the jacket 5 ducts 7 through which a current of cooling air passes.
In the embodiment of Fig.1, the hub of the control pulley 8, mounted on the outer end of the shaft 2, is pierced with holes 9 opening into the annular duct 7. In addition, on the inner end of the shaft. the sleeve 5 is fixed to a small fan wheel 10, the rear flange 11 of which is in contact with the shaft 2 only by a nozzle 12. Finally, appropriate openings 13 are drilled in a sheet 14 closing the chamber of the small auxiliary fan 10 .
Under these conditions, the small fan 10, driven in the rotational movement of the shaft 2, sucks in fresh air, which enters through the holes 9 in the ducts 7 between the jacket 5 and the said shaft, which has the effect of maintaining the jacket 5 and therefore the ball bearings 4 at a sufficiently low temperature to ensure proper operation of the fan.
In the embodiment shown in Fig.3, the fresh air also passes through the gap 7 between the jacket 5 and the shaft 2, sucked in by the auxiliary fan 10. This
<Desc / Clms Page number 3>
air effectively cools the flange 11, which, mounted on the shaft 2, is subjected to strong heating. As previously, the jacket 5 is isolated from the shaft 2 and as a result any harmful heat transmission is prevented.
It is understood that one would not depart from the scope of the invention by modifying the construction forms described, the invention essentially relating to the provision of a sleeve supporting the bearings of the bearing and mounted on the fan shaft, or of the targeted device, so as to leave between it and this shaft passage to un'current of refrigeration.
