MONTAGE DE L'AXE DU MECANISME DE COPIAGE A PALPEUR D'UNE MACHINE-OUTIL
A REPRODUIRE.

ASSEMBLY OF THE SHAFT OF THE COPIING MECHANISM OF A MACHINE-TOOL
TO REPRODUCE.
The subject of the invention is the copying mechanism with a feeler of a reproducing machine, for example of a milling machine which by its feeler successively touches all the points of the sample part and controls the movements of the machine tool to obtain a copy of the sample piece.
The axes of the already known feeler mechanisms comprise approximately in the middle of their length a gimbal or a ball joint so as to pivot in all directions around these housings; they are also also movable in axial le.sense and sometimes also supported by a support, in the interest of the adjustment sensitivity. By virtue of its function, the axis can be considered as a lever with two arms subjected to bending like a beam fixed in its middle and whose two ends are exposed to a load or to a force., The value of these forces is given by the traction or the thrust of the springs essential for the operation of the mechanism as well as by the passive resistances generated by the friction in the bearings and in the ball joints, especially in the conical hollow where the tip of the axis engages .
The value of the bending moment, influenced by a relatively large length of the overhangs of the axis, means that these forces, however small they are, still cause the bending of the axis. This results in the poor precision of the part machined by the machine tool
to be reproduced, since the movements of the machine are already sensitive to an axial or lateral deviation of the probe of 0.03 mm and even less.
In order to reduce to the strict minimum the deflection of the axis and of the pressure of the probe on the sample part, the bending moment is reduced, according to the invention, by a new mounting system.
shaft of the probe mechanism, and the sliding friction is replaced, for the most part, by the rolling friction.
The system for mounting the axis of the probe mechanism essentially resides in that the probe axis is placed in two bearings. Love

net with cylindrical bore is provided in which moves a spherical ring integral with the axis. In addition, the support supporting the axis at a point which is determined by the axis passing through the center of gravity, is pivotable and has a spherical seat face.
The accompanying drawing and showing a longitudinal section of the feeler mechanism clearly shows an example of the embodiment of the invention and of the operation of the new method of mounting the shaft according to the present invention.

-5- screwed into the tube forms by its conical part the outer ring for ball bearings with the conical inner race for the balls -6- placed in the cage -7-, pushed axially by the spring -8- towards the inner ring -9- which is integral with the axis and which comprises the conical outer path for the balls. The spring is supported on the ring -10assured in place, on the axle, by an elastic ring -11-. Under its center <EMI ID = 3.1>

so that it can pivot. The bush is blocked by the nut -15- which allows the thrust of the spring exerted against the support to be adjusted. On the cylindrical face of the bearing -16-, on the other end of the shaft, bears the spherical ring -17- tightly tightened against the axis using the head -18-. The head -18- exerts pressure on the screw -19- which is screwed into the lever -20- and secured in place by the nut -21-. The lever is pivoted around the pivot -22- so that the tension spring
-23- attached by one of its ears to the small branch of the lever and by the other ear attached to the screw -24- adjustable by the operation of the knob
-25-, exerts a very weak thrust on the head by means of the screw of the long arm of the lever and hence on the axis in the direction of the ball bearing.
The probe -26- is held on the conical end of the axis
by the cap nut -27- housed on balls -28-.
The greatest operating precision of the machine is obtained when the probe mechanism is the most sensitive, that is to say when the pressure of the probe -26- on the sample part is as low as possible. Springs -13- and -23- are calibrated by nuts -15- and
-25- so that the axis -4- is housed and centered without play in the ball bearing, with the lowest possible tension of the two springs. The spring -13- of the support -12- carries the weight of the axle -4- which is' -supported just under the center of gravity of the axle. In the absence of this support the axis should be pushed by a relatively large force so that it is centered in the <EMI ID = 5.1>
of the mechanism. When the probe -26- does not touch the surface of the sample part, the conical surfaces of the spherical ring -9- and of the sleeve
-5- come to rest -on the balls and the axis -4- is pushed into its extreme position. In this position of the axis and the feeler, the circuit which causes the advance of the feeler mechanism and the feeler towards the surface of the sample part is closed. As soon as the probe comes to rest on the surface of the sample piece, it moves axially and with it also the axis -4- and this in such a way that the lever -20- pivots and cuts the electrical circuit through which it is made the movement of the probe towards the sample part.
The probe, which only lightly touches the surface of the sample part, then moves in the direction of the arrow X to a point where, as can be seen from the drawing, the surface until then vertical to the probe axis, suddenly begins to rise. Under the influence of the upward slope the friction between the probe and the surface of the
