II-II.
<Desc/Clms Page number 2>

METHANE GAS (CH4) PRODUCTION TANKS.
The present invention relates to concrete tanks allowing the recovery of methane gas from plant materials containing cellulose such as: straw, paper, farmyard manure, potato haulms, etc. and can be used for both domestic (stove, heating, lighting for homes or various premises) and industrial uses such as gas engines, stationary or mobile, etc ...
The plan of the pits is given only as an example, the invention being able to be applied to any other suitable figure.
The various peculiarities of the invention reside mainly in the fact that:
1 - A preheating system is provided in order to be able to rapidly bring the temperature of the contents of the cell to 30-35 ° C., which is the one to be reached for the development of fermentation and this in the case of winter temperatures.
2 - A system of thermos-siphons with large layers of interconnected tubes ensures circulation of the ferment and thus allows homogeneous fermentation throughout the extent of each of the pits.
3 - For the start-up, it is necessary to cultivate beforehand an anaerobic ferment or culture broth which will allow a rapid formenic fermentation.
40- The construction made of concrete with very thin walls and drowned in manure can be used without preheating or thermo-siphon.
Other details of the invention will also be described in the description which follows.
In the accompanying drawing is shown by way of example an embodiment of the present invention.
Figure 1 shows in elevation two production pits A & B which are twinned., The one on the right being cut off, st. II-II.
<Desc / Clms Page number 2>
Fig. 2 is a section along I-I of FIG. 1
Fig. 3 gives the plan view of the two pits A & B according to fig. 1, pit B with cover 6 removed.
Figure 4 shows the detail in section of the fastening system of the cover 6 by hook 7 (type back & forth) taken from circle III of Figure 2.
According to the embodiment shown in the drawing, the production tanks A & B are made of concrete, preferably reinforced and well watertight, which can contain up to 20 m3 and more. They are seated on a raft 1, the perimeter wall 2 and the partition 2 'support the roof 3 which has a raised edge 4 of at least 25 to 30 cm. and framing the fill openings. Each of the A & B pits has a 5 '& 6-welded and sealed sheet steel cover with a 20 cm rim. minimum.
These covers rest on the protruding part of the roof 3 and are held by hooks 7 so that they cannot be raised by the pressure of the gas developing in the pits during the operation of the installation. Each pit has two thermos-siphons, each of which consists of a central tube in steel or other metal closed at its ends 8 & 9 for A, 10 and 11 for B to which other tubes are connected. steel sizes # smaller 8 '& 8 "by 8, 9' & 9" by 9, 10 '& 10 "by 10 and finally 11' & 11" by 11. They enter the pits 10 cm. down and up to the edge of the fill opening limit.
'The passage of all these connections in the concrete must be perfectly' 'watertight *
The liquid from the pits is emptied through a steel tube fitted with its valve 12-13 for A & 14-15 for B.
Each of the pits has a gas outlet fitted with a tube end with tap 16-18 and 20 for A and 17-19 and 21 for B., each outlet consists of a steel tube, the part penetrating into the pit is open to let the gas pass, the other is blocked. It should be noted that the outlet tube for these outlets is at a higher level than the concrete edges 4 '. These gas outlets are piped to a gasometer for storage.
Part 27 shows the preheating system consisting of a steel tube socket 26 coming out of the bottom of pit A, fitted with a shut-off valve 25 and conveying the liquid from the pit in a coil
24 inside which it will undergo a long warming pass by wood fire, gas, coal or electricity and will come out through the tap 23 to return to the top of the pit through tube 22. - This same device can be applied to the B.
PRINCIPLE: By a biological process of anaerobic fermentation that is formenic but not butyric (attacking cellulose).
OPERATION - Installation start-up.
The operation is based on the principle of formenic fermentation, it is necessary to have a fast ferment which will be poured into the production pits. These will be filled with materials containing cellulosic contents such as straw, dry herbs, potato tops, manure, etc., and after filling, water or liquid manure will be poured into them until the material is flooded and up to the edge of the pits, put the metal covers in them and lock them, finally, fill the circumference of the covers with water so as to ensure a water seal. At this time all the taps will be hermetically closed. Wait 24 hours then evacuate the air until gas arrives.
PRODUCTION:
Gas production is equal to half the volume per day of capacity of each of the production pits. Its duration varies from 10 to 14 weeks or three months, after this time it will be necessary to provide for another load.
