1) le démarreur comporte deux éléments bimétalliques, associés à'des résistances chauffantes., se déformant dans le même sens et formant l'interrupteur du démarreur;
2) un des éléments bimétalliques, dit élément principal est chauffé par une résistance chauffante à forte inertie thermique; l'autre élé- ment bimétallique,, dit élément secondaire.\) est chauffé par une résistance chauffante à faible inertie thermique;
3) l'élément bimétallique secondaire porte un contact appuyant sur l'élément bimétallique principal de façon que les déformations de l'élé- ment secondaire sont limitées par l'élément principal;
<Desc/Clms Page number 3>
en série avec l'interrupteur du démarreur, en série, dans le circuit de préchauffage des électrodes de la lampe à décharges électriques;
6) les caractéristiques respectives des résistances de chauffage sont choisies de façon qu'en période de préchauffage des électrodes de la lampe à décharges électriques- c'est-à-dire lorsque les résistances chauffantes sont parcourues par un courant de même intensité - l'élément bimétallique secondaire a tendance à se déformer plus rapidement que l'élément bimétallique principal. l'ouverture de l'interrupteur étant retardée jusqu'à ce que la décharge électrique soit établie entre les électrodes de la lampe à décharges électriques., la résistance de chauffage associée à l'élé- ,ment principal étant alors seule parcourue par du courant;
7) le démarreur est éventuellement contenu dans une enceinte sous vide ou à remplissage de gaz inerte, comme le néon, l'argon, l'azote, l'hydrogène ou l'hélium;
<Desc/Clms Page number 4>
<Desc/Clms Page number 5>
se déformant dans le même sens et formant un double interrupteur;
2) un des éléments bimétalliques dit élément principale est chauffé par une résistance chauffante à forte inertie thermique; les deux autres éléments, dits respectivement élément secondaire et élément auxiliai- re, sont chauffés par des résistances chauffantes à faible inertie thermi- que;
4) la résistance chauffante à forte inertie thermique associée à 1-'élément bimétallique principal est destinée à être connectée en série dans le circuit d'alimentation de la lampe à décharges électriques; elle est constituéepar exemple., d'un fil en métal réfractaire, comme le nickel- chrome, le tungstène ou le molybdène, enroulé et spiralé sur un mandrin en matériau isolant et résistant à la chaleur;
5) la résistance chauffante à faible inertie thermique associée à Isolement bimétallique auxiliaire est destinée à être également connectée en série dans le circuit d'alimentation de la lampe à décharges électriques;
6) la résistance chauffante à faible inertie thermique associée à l'élément bimétallique secondaire est destinée à être connectée en série dans le circuit de préchauffage des électrodes de la lampe à décharges élec- triques; sont également destinés à être connectés en série dans ce circuit de préchauffage, Isolément bimétallique secondaire et, connectés en parallè- le les éléments bimétalliques principal et auxiliaire;
7) les caractéristiques respectives des résistances de chauf- fage sont choisies de façon qu'en période de préchauffage consécutive au premier amorçage de la lampe à décharges électriques l'élément bimétallique secondaire a tendance à se déformer plus rapidement que Isolément principal. la déformation de l'élément bimétallique auxiliaire ayant eu lieu librement, l'ouverture du dernier contact de l'interrupteur étant retardée jusqu'à ce que la décharge électrique soit établie entre les électrodes de la lampe à décharges électriques.. la résistance de chauffage associée à l'élément se- condaire n'étant plus parcourue par du courant;
8) les caractéristiques respectives des résistances de chauf- àge sont encore choisies de façon qu'en période de préchauffage consécuti- ve à un réamorgage de la lampe à décharges électriques suite à une courte interruption du circuit d'alimentation, l'élément bimétallique secondaire se déforme tout en étant limité par la déformation de l'élément bimétallique auxiliaire jusqu'à ce que cet élément secondaire vienne en contact avec Isolément bimétallique principal, la fermeture du premier contact de l'in- terrupteur étant ainsi avancée et l'ouverture du dernier contact étant re- tardée jusqu'à ce que la décharge électrique soit établie entre les élec- trodes de la lampe à décharges électriques;
<Desc/Clms Page number 6>
sous vide ou à remplissage gazeux Inerte, comme à remplissage de néon, d'ar- gon, d'azote, d'hydrogène ou d'hélium;
<Desc/Clms Page number 7>
<Desc/Clms Page number 8>
Il est nécessaire., pour réaliser cette condition, que l'iner- tie thermique de la résistance chauffante R, associée à l'élément bimétalli- que principal B, soit beaucoup plus forte que celle des résistances chauf- fantes RF-et RA, associées aux éléments secondaire et auxiliaire (BF et BA);
Selon un troisième mode de réalisation de l'invention, mode de réalisation ayant également pour but de réduire le retard au réamorgage de la lampe à décharges électriques lors d'une interruption du circuit d'ali- mentation,mais n'utilisant que deux éléments bimétalliques, le démarreur thermique pour lampes à décharges électriques dans un gaz ou une vapeur mé- tallique et le circuit y associé présentent les caractéristiques suivantes;
1) le démarreur comporte deux éléments bimétalliques, associés à des résistances chauffantes., se déformant dans le même sens et formant un interrupteur-inverseur;
2) un des éléments bimétalliques., dit élément principal., est chauffé par une résistance chauffante à forte inertie thermique; l'autre élément bimétallique., dit élément secondaire, est chauffé par une résis- tance chauffante à faible inertie thermique;
4) la résistance chauffante à forte inertie thermique asso- ciée à l'élément bimétallique principal est destinée à être connectée en série dans le circuit d'alimentation de la lampe à décharges électriques;
elle est constituée, par exemple, d'un fil en matériau réfractaire, comme le.nickel-chrome,le tungstène ou le molybdène, enroulé et spiralé sur un mandrin en matériau isolant et résistant à la chaleur;
5) la résistance chauffante à faible inertie thermique associée à l'élément bimétallique secondaire est destinée à être conneqtée elle-même en série avec les deux éléments bimétalliques formant l'interrupteur du dé- marreur., en.série dans le circuit de préchauffage des électrodes de la lampe à décharges électriques;
6) les caractéristiques respectives des résistances de chauffa- ge sont choisies de façon qu'en période de préchauffage des électrodes de la lampe à décharges électriques, l'élément bimétallique secondaire a ten- dance à se déformer plus rapidement que l'élément bimétallique principale l'ouverture de l'interrupteur étant retardée jusqu'à ce que la décharge électrique soit établie entre les électrodes de la lampe à décharges élec- triques, la résistance de chauffage associée à l'élément principal étant alors seule parcourue par du courant;
<Desc/Clms Page number 9>
8)
la résistance auxiliaire peut éventuellement être formée d'une résistance chauffante qui contribue à maintenir l'élément bimétallique prin- cipal à sa déformation maximum., le courant traversant la résistance chauffan- te associée à cet élément étant limité à une valeur qui n'assurerait pas ce maintien, dans ce cas la résistance chauffante auxiliaire est constituée d'une résistance à faible inertie thermique;
<Desc/Clms Page number 10>
<Desc/Clms Page number 11>

STARTERS FOR ELECTRIC DISCHARGE LAMPS AND ASSOCIATED CIRCUITS.
The present invention relates to automatic switches intended to cooperate with electric discharge lamps in a gas or a metallic vapor with a view to initiating by preheating the electrodes, activated by alkaline earth metal oxides, of such lam- peso
The invention relates in particular to devices with elements that can be influenced by a heat release, in particular bimetallic elements heated by resistors, which are commonly called and will be designated hereinafter by the general name of thermal "starters".
The starters usually produced generally comprise wound heating filaments, from which the supports or winding mandrels have been removed by mechanical or chemical means, so as to obtain an assembly with low thermal inertia. It seems that the manufacturers of such starters have devoted the main part of their efforts to making these devices as fast as possible by reducing the thermal elements as much as possible, so as to obtain a relatively rapid ignition of the electric discharge lamps. .
The thermal starters currently known on the market are generally mounted on an insulating plate or on a glass or ceramic support; To the knowledge of the Applicant Company, none of these starters is enclosed in a vacuum or gas-filled enclosure.
During ignition tests on tubular fluorescent lamps

milks (electric discharge lamps in mercury vapor, with fluorescent coating and with electrodes formed by tungsten filaments activated by alkaline earth metal oxides)
having to start correctly even when operating at low temperature - of the order of 20 C below zero - it has been observed that all the starters usually used have a common fault. The "preheating" time, that is to say the time preceding the actual initiation of the electric discharge through the mercury vapor, during which the electrodes are traversed by an electric current called preheating and are carried at high temperature by Joule effect, is insufficient and it is necessary that the starter "beats", that is to say, opens and closes several times before the electrodes have reached a temperature sufficient for l correct initiation of the discharge.
It is also known that the manufacturers of thermal starters rely on several beats to achieve sufficient preheating of the electrodes.
To remedy this drawback, thermal starters are generally fitted with a so-called interference suppression capacitor connected to the terminals of the starter. In reality, the role of this capacitor is twofold.
It obviously dampens the radio-electric interference which can arise during the operation of the starter, but in addition., Being charged when the starter contacts close, it discharges when it opens through its contacts and causes a slight welding of these contacts. This phenomenon lengthens the preheating time. \) By increasing the work of opening the contacts, with as a counterpart a deterioration of the starter components during each operation.
The present invention relates to embodiments of thermal starters for electric discharge lamps in a gas or a metallic vapor and to associated circuits. () Ensuring sufficient preheating of the electrodes and correct ignition between these electrodes. , even at low temperature, whether it is during the first priming or during a re-priming following an extinction of the lamp.
According to a first embodiment of the invention, the thermal starter for lamps with electric discharges in a gas or a metallic vapor and the associated circuit have the following characteristics:
1) the starter comprises two bimetallic elements, associated with heating resistors., Deforming in the same direction and forming the starter switch;
2) one of the bimetallic elements, said main element, is heated by a heating resistor with high thermal inertia; the other bimetallic element, called the secondary element. \) is heated by a heating resistor with low thermal inertia;
3) the secondary bimetallic element carries a contact pressing on the main bimetallic element so that the deformations of the secondary element are limited by the main element;
4) the heating resistor with high thermal inertia associated with the main bimetallic element is intended to be connected in series in the supply circuit of the electric discharge lamp; it is made, for example., of a refractory metal wire, such as nickel-chromium, tungsten or molybdenum wound and spiraled on a mandrel made of insulating and heat-resistant material.
5) The low thermal inertia heating resistor associated with the secondary bimetal element is intended to be connected, itself
<Desc / Clms Page number 3>
in series with the starter switch, in series, in the preheating circuit of the electrodes of the electric discharge lamp;
6) the respective characteristics of the heating resistors are chosen so that during the preheating of the electrodes of the electric discharge lamp - that is to say when the heating resistors are traversed by a current of the same intensity - the Secondary bimetal element tends to deform faster than the primary bimetallic element. the opening of the switch being delayed until the electric discharge is established between the electrodes of the electric discharge lamp., the heating resistance associated with the main element then being alone traversed by current ;
7) the starter is optionally contained in an enclosure under vacuum or filled with inert gas, such as neon, argon, nitrogen, hydrogen or helium;
8) the starter can optionally be fitted with heat-insulating screens isolating the bimetallic elements of the heating resistor which does not cooperate with them.
Figure 1 of the accompanying drawings gives an embodiment diagram of a starter for electric discharge lamps in a gas or a metallic vapor and associated circuit according to this first form of the invention.
In this figure, L represents the electric discharge lamp supplied from a suitable current source through a stabilization impedance S (resistance, inductance, capacitance, or even any combination of these elements), the preheating of the electrodes Fl and F2 of the lamp L being provided by the starter D.
The operation of the device is as follows.
Before switching on, the starter switch D is closed contact C of the secondary bimetallic element BF pressing on Main insulation Bo After switching on, the electrodes FI and F2 of the lamp L are crossed by a current of preheating which successively runs through the following elements:
S - Stabilizing impedance of the lamp L R - Heating resistor of the main element B,
Fl- Lamp electrode L,
B - Main bimetallic element.
C - Starter switch contact D,
BF - Secondary bimetallic element.
RF - Heating resistance of the secondary element BF,
F2 - Lamp electrode L.
The heating resistors R and RF, inserted in series the first in the supply circuit proper of the lamp L and the second in the preheating circuit of the electrodes F1 and F2 of the lamp L, are crossed by a current of the same intensity . Since resistor R has high thermal inertia and since resistor RF has low thermal inertia, the secondary bimetallic element BF will tend to deform.
<Desc / Clms Page number 4>
faster than the main element Bo
However, the deformation of the secondary bimetallic element BF will be limited by that of the main element B, since the secondary element BF carries a contact which presses on the main element B in the direction of the deformation of the two bi-metallic elements.
It follows that the opening of the starter switch D 'will only be possible when the temperature reached by the heating resistor R is such that the deformation of the main bimetal insulation B is sufficient for it leaves the contact C integral with the secondary element BF.
At this moment, the electric discharge having been initiated between the electrodes F1 and F2 of the lamp L, the heating resistor R is alone crossed by the steady-state current, the main bimetallic element being maintained in its "open" position by this resistor while the secondary element BF, while cooling returns to its initial position.
In other words, the intervention of the secondary bimetallic element BF, carrying a contact pressing on the main element B, aims to extend the duration of the preheating period of the electrodes Fl and F2 of lamp L. Compared with thermal starters generally used, this preheating period is extended by the time during which the two bimetallic elements deform simultaneously while remaining in contact.
To achieve this condition, it is necessary that the thermal inertia of the heating resistor R, associated with the main bimetallic element B, be much greater than that of the heating resistor RF, associated with the element. secondary BF; in this way, the time that the two bimetallic elements will remain in contact will be a significant fraction of the preheating period.
In practice, this thermal inertia must be greater than that of the electrodes of the lamp L; in this way, correct ignition of the lamp is ensured as soon as the starter switch is opened. The heating resistor with high thermal inertia can be formed, for example, by winding a wire of refractory metal, such as nickel-chromium, , spiraled on a core or core of insulating material., porcelain or soapstone.
During a momentary interruption of the supply circuit of the electric discharge lamp L, the heating resistor R cools and the main bimetallic element B returns to its initial position in contact with the secondary element BF. At this time, the priming process begins again and it is also ensured, when the lamp is re-primed, to have a sufficiently long preheating period available. It would be the same during a rebound following a first priming, which, for whatever reason, could have established the electric discharge inside the lamp.
The operation of a starter according to this embodiment is more than satisfactory, the relatively slow heating of the resistance to high thermal inertia ensuring correct starting of the electric discharge lamp, following preheating. extended electrodes.
However, when the power supply circuit is interrupted, the return to the initial position of the starter is delayed by the high thermal inertia of the heating resistance of the main bimetallic element which keeps the switch open.
- It follows that a certain time must elapse before the two bimetallic elements forming the switch come into contacta, hence a delay in the reloading of the electric discharge lamp.
<Desc / Clms Page number 5>
According to another embodiment of the invention, an embodiment having the aim of reducing the delay in restarting the electric discharge lamp during an interruption of the supply circuit, the thermal starter for lamps. with electric discharges in a gas or a metallic vapor and the associated circuit have the following characteristics 1) the starter has three bimetallic elements, associated with heating resistors,
deforming in the same direction and forming a double switch;
2) one of the bimetallic elements said main element is heated by a heating resistor with high thermal inertia; the other two elements, called the secondary element and the auxiliary element, respectively, are heated by heating resistors with low thermal inertia;
3) the secondary bimetallic element carries two contacts pressing respectively on the main element and on the auxiliary element so that the deformations of the secondary insulation are limited by the main and auxiliary elements.
4) the heating resistor with high thermal inertia associated with the main bimetallic element is intended to be connected in series in the supply circuit of the electric discharge lamp; it consists, for example, of a refractory metal wire, such as nickel-chromium, tungsten or molybdenum, wound and spiraled on a mandrel made of insulating and heat-resistant material;
5) the heating resistor with low thermal inertia associated with auxiliary bimetallic insulation is intended to be also connected in series in the supply circuit of the electric discharge lamp;
6) the low thermal inertia heating resistor associated with the secondary bimetallic element is intended to be connected in series in the preheating circuit of the electrodes of the electric discharge lamp; are also intended to be connected in series in this preheating circuit, Secondary bimetallic insulation and, connected in parallel the main and auxiliary bimetallic elements;
7) the respective characteristics of the heating resistors are chosen so that in period of preheating subsequent to the first ignition of the electric discharge lamp the secondary bimetallic element tends to deform more rapidly than the main element. the deformation of the auxiliary bimetallic element having taken place freely, the opening of the last contact of the switch being delayed until the electric discharge is established between the electrodes of the electric discharge lamp. the heating resistor associated with the secondary element no longer carrying current;
8) the respective characteristics of the heating resistors are still chosen so that in a period of preheating following a re-priming of the electric discharge lamp following a short interruption of the supply circuit, the secondary bimetallic element deforms while being limited by the deformation of the auxiliary bimetallic element until this secondary element comes into contact with the main bimetallic element, the closing of the first contact of the switch being thus advanced and the opening of the last contact being delayed until an electric discharge is established between the electrodes of the electric discharge lamp;
9) the starter. is possibly contained in an enclosure
<Desc / Clms Page number 6>
vacuum or gas filled Inert, such as neon, argon, nitrogen, hydrogen or helium filled;
10) the starter can optionally be fitted with heat shields isolating the bimetallic elements of the heating resistors which do not cooperate with them.
FIG. 2 of the accompanying drawings gives an embodiment diagram of a starter for an electric discharge lamp in a gas or a metallic vapor and of a circuit associated therewith according to this second form of the invention.
In this figure, L represents the electric discharge lamp supplied from a suitable current source through a stabilization impedance S (resistance, inductance, capacitance, or even any combination of these elements), the preheating of the electrodes F1 and F2 of the lamp L being provided by the starter D.
The operation of the device is as follows.
Before switching on, the double starter switch D is closed, contacts C1 and 02 of the secondary bimetallic element BF pressing respectively on the main element B and on the auxiliary element BA. After switching on the electrodes F1 and F2 of the lamp L are crossed by a preheating current which passes successively through the following elements:
S - Stabilization impedance of the lamp L,
R - Heating resistance of the main element B,
RA- Heating resistance of the auxiliary element BA,
FI - Lamp electrode L,
B and
BA- connected in parallel, respectively main bimetallic element and auxiliary bimetallic element.
C1 and
C2- in parallel, contacts of the double starter switch-D.,
BF - Secondary bimetallic element.
RF - Heating resistance of the secondary element BF,
F2 - Lamp electrode L.
The heating resistors R, RA and RF, inserted in series, the first two in the supply circuit proper of the lamp L and the third in the preheating circuit of the electrodes FI and F2 of the lamp L, are traversed by a current of the same intensity. As the resistor R has high thermal inertia and as the resistors RA and RF have low thermal inertia, the main bimetallic element B will tend to deform less rapidly than the secondary BF and auxiliary elements BA.
Such a difference will have no influence on the deformation of the auxiliary bimetallic element BA, the latter being able to deform free.
<Desc / Clms Page number 7>
ment, but the deformation of the secondary bimetallic element- BF will be limited by that of 'main isolation B. since the secondary element BF carries a contact CI which presses on main isolation B in the direction of the de- formation of the three bimetallic elements.
The auxiliary bimetallic element BA being associated with a heating resistor RA of low thermal inertia and which can be deformed freely. contact 02 of the double starter switch opens quickly, shortly after switching on the power supply. The auxiliary element BA therefore has no role when igniting the lamp.
On the other hand, coverage of contact C1 of the double starter switch D will only be possible when the temperature reached by resistor R, at high thermal inertia, is such that the deformation of the main bimetallic element B is sufficient. so that it leaves the contact C1 integral with the secondary element BF.
At this moment, the electric discharge having been initiated between the electrodes F1 and F2 of the electric discharge lamp L, the heating resistors R and RA will only be crossed by the operating current., The main B and auxiliary bimetallic elements BA being maintained. in the "open" position by these resistors while secondary isolation BF, while cooling returns to its initial position.
At boot time, \! the operation of the starter according to this second form of the invention is therefore identical to that of the starter according to the first form, the auxiliary bimetallic element playing no role and the preheating period being only conditioned by the action of the bimetallic elements primary and secondary.
The role of the auxiliary bimetallic element 1.11 is to reduce the delay in re-priming of the lamp in the event of a momentary interruption of the power supply circuit, as has been said above.
In this box the operation of the device is as follows
In operation, in the state of the electric discharge lamp, only the heating resistors R and RA, associated with the main B and auxiliary BA bimetallic elements, are traversed by current.
In the event of an interruption in the supply circuit, these resistors cool down and the main B and auxiliary BA bimetallic elements return to their initial positions until they come into contact with contacts C1 and C2 of the Secondary insulation BF, returned to its initial position at the end of the preheating period,
However, the heating resistor R being at high thermal inertia, the return to its initial position of auxiliary bimetallic insulation BA will be much faster than the return to its initial position of main insulation B. The circuit comprising contact C2 will therefore be closed. faster than the circuit containing contact C1.
It follows that during a very short interruption of the supply circuit, the auxiliary bimetallic element BA will have reached its initial position and will press on contact C2 before contact C1 relating to main insulation B is closed. If therefore the supply voltage reappears before the main element B has returned to its initial position, the preheating circuit of the electrodes will however be closed via the auxiliary element BA and the contact G2. The auxiliary BA and secondary BF elements will deform in a similar way until the contact C1 comes into contact with the main isolation B.
At this moment, the auxiliary element BA can deform freely and the process of preheating the electrodes continues as already explained above.
<Desc / Clms Page number 8>
In other words; the intervention of the auxiliary bimetallic element BA, pressing on the contact C2 of the secondary element BF is intended to allow the preheating of the electrodes following an interruption of the power supply circuit before the main element B has returned to its initial position.
Compared to generally used thermal starters? the re-priming delay is therefore reduced by the difference in the times required for the return to their initial position of the main and auxiliary bimetallic elements
To achieve this condition, it is necessary that the thermal inertia of the heating resistor R, associated with the main bimetallic element B, be much greater than that of the heating resistors RF- and RA, associated with the secondary and auxiliary elements (BF and BA);
in practice, the inertia of the heating resistor RA will be chosen to be slightly greater than that of the heating resistor RFo -
According to a third embodiment of the invention, an embodiment also having the aim of reducing the delay in the recharging of the electric discharge lamp during an interruption of the supply circuit, but using only two elements. bimetallic, the thermal starter for electric discharge lamps in a gas or a metallic vapor and the associated circuit have the following characteristics;
1) the starter has two bimetallic elements, associated with heating resistors., Deforming in the same direction and forming a reversing switch;
2) one of the bimetallic elements, called the main element, is heated by a heating resistor with high thermal inertia; the other bimetallic element, called the secondary element, is heated by a heating resistor with low thermal inertia;
3) the secondary bimetallic element carries a contact pressing on the main bimetallic element so as to form the starter switch, the deformations of the secondary element being limited by the main element:
4) the heating resistor with high thermal inertia associated with the main bimetallic element is intended to be connected in series in the supply circuit of the electric discharge lamp;
it consists, for example, of a wire of refractory material, such as nickel-chromium, tungsten or molybdenum, wound and spiraled on a mandrel made of insulating and heat-resistant material;
5) the heating resistor with low thermal inertia associated with the secondary bimetallic element is intended to be itself connected in series with the two bimetallic elements forming the starter switch., In series in the preheating circuit of the motors. electrodes of the electric discharge lamp;
6) the respective characteristics of the heating resistors are chosen so that during the preheating of the electrodes of the electric discharge lamp, the secondary bimetallic element tends to deform more rapidly than the main bimetallic element the opening of the switch being delayed until the electric discharge is established between the electrodes of the electric discharge lamp, the heating resistor associated with the main element then only being traversed by current;
7) the main bimetallic element forms one of the contacts of an inverter which, for the maximum deformation of this element, comes into contact with one terminal of an auxiliary resistor whose other terminal is connected to
<Desc / Clms Page number 9>
the input terminal of the heating resistor associated with this main element, the characteristics of this auxiliary resistor are chosen so that the current which crosses, in the operating state of the electric discharge lamp, the heating resistor associated with the 'main bi-metallic element is limited to a value which however ensures the maintenance of the maximum deformation of this main element
8)
the auxiliary resistor may optionally be formed of a heating resistor which contributes to maintaining the main bimetallic element at its maximum deformation., the current flowing through the heating resistor associated with this element being limited to a value which would not ensure not this maintenance, in this case the auxiliary heating resistance consists of a resistance with low thermal inertia;
9) the starter is optionally contained in an enclosure under vacuum or filled with inert gas, such as neon, argon, nitrogen, hydrogen or helium; 10) the starter may optionally be fitted with heat-insulating screens isolating the bimetallic elements of the heating resistance (s) which do not cooperate with them.
FIG. 3 of the accompanying drawings gives an embodiment diagram of a starter for lamps with electric discharges in a gas or a metallic vapor and of a circuit associated therewith according to this third form of the invention.
In this figure, L represents the electric discharge lamp supplied from a suitable current source through a stabilization impedance S (resistance, inductance, capacitance, or even any combination of these elements). the preheating of the electrodes F1 and F2 of the lamp L being provided by the starter Do
The operation of the device is as follows.
Before power-up, the starter switch D is closed, the contact C of secondary bimetallic insulation BF pressing on Main insulation B. After power-up, electrodes F1 and F2 of lamp L are crossed by a current of preheating which successively runs through the following elements
S - Stabilization impedance of the lamp L,
R - Heating resistance of the main element B,, Fl - Electrode of the lamp L,
B - Main bimetallic element
C - Starter switch contact D,
BF - Secondary bimetallic element ,,
RF - Heating resistance of the secondary element BF,
F2 - Lo lamp electrode
The R and RF heating resistors,
inserted in series - the first in the supply circuit proper of the lamp L and the second in the preheating circuit of the electrodes F1 and F2 of the lamp L, are traversed by a current of the same intensity. Since resistor R has high thermal inertia and since resistor RF has low inertia
<Desc / Clms Page number 10>
thermal., the secondary bimetallic element BF will tend to deform more quickly than the main element B.
However., The deformation of secondary bimetallic isolation
BF will be limited by that of the main element B, since the secondary element BF carries a contact which rests on the main element B in the direction of the deformation of the two bimetallic elements o 'It follows that the opening of the starter switch D will only be possible when the temperature reached by the heating resistor R, with high thermal inertia, is sufficient for the deformation of the main bimetallic element B to be such that leaves the contact C integral with the secondary element BF.
At this moment, the electric discharge having been initiated between the electrodes F1 and F2 of the electric discharge lamp L., The heating resistor R is only traversed by current, thus maintaining the main bimetallic element B in its position. 'open', while the secondary element BF, while cooling, returns to its initial position.
At boot time, \! the operation of the starter according to this third form of the invention is therefore identical to that of the starter according to the first form of 1-'invention., the auxiliary resistance RA playing no role and the preheating period being only conditioned by the action of the main and secondary bimetallic elements.,
The role of the auxiliary resistor is to reduce the delay in restarting the lamp in the event of a momentary interruption of the supply circuit, as mentioned above.
The operation of the device is as follows.
After initiation of the electric discharge between the electrodes FI and F2 of the electric discharge lamp, the heating resistor R, through which the operating current of the lamp passes through, continues to heat the main bimetallic element B. The latter therefore continues to deform until it comes into contact with the AC contact connected to the auxiliary resistor RA. At this moment, this auxiliary resistor RA is put in parallel., Via the main element B, with the heating resistor R in the supply circuit of the lamp L.
In this way, by a judicious choice of the characteristics of the heating resistors R and RA (the latter possibly) it is possible to limit the current passing through the heating resistor R to a value such as to ensure the maintenance of the main bimetallic element B in con - tact with the CA contact. It follows that., During an interruption of the supply circuit, \! the main element B will return to its initial position more quickly, the thermal energy stored in the heating resistor R being lower.
In other words, the intervention of the auxiliary resistor RA is intended to reduce, compared with the thermal starters generally used, the restarting delay, which is reduced in a proportion equivalent to the ratio of the currents flowing through the heating resistor. R before and after switching on the auxiliary resistor RA.
This auxiliary resistor RA can advantageously be constituted by a heating resistor which will contribute to maintaining the main bimetallic element B in its maximum deformation. In this case, by a good adaptation of the characteristics of the heating resistors R and RA, it is possible to limit the current passing through the resistor R to a value such that it cannot alone ensure the maintenance of the main element B in con-
<Desc / Clms Page number 11>
tact with the AC contact, this maintenance being ensured by the additional energy released by the auxiliary heating resistor RA.
For this, it is necessary for the thermal inertia of the auxiliary heating resistance RA to be very low so that the return to its initial position of the main bimetallic insulation B depends only on the heating resistance R. In the latter case, the re-ignition delay will be reduced in a proportion equivalent to the ratio of the currents flowing through the heating resistor R before and after switching on the auxiliary heating resistor RA.
It is also necessary that the thermal inertia of the heating resistor R, associated with the main bimetallic insulation B, is much greater than that of the heating resistors RF and RA (the latter possibly)., The latter being chosen the most. low possible.
