ELECTRODE FOR WELDING.
Welding electrodes made up of a nickel-copper alloy core and a flux-forming coating can be used to apply deposits, to steel or to join nickel or nickel-copper alloys to steel or another base metal containing a high proportion of iron.
But, when used in this manner, the deposited weld metal tends to harden and crack and, although it does not contain cracks, has low ductility.
The present invention is based on the finding that an important factor for the production of ductile and crack-free nickel-copper deposits and solder joints, particularly after stress relieving heat treatments at usual temperature. of 620 C., is the control of the carbon content.
It has also been found that the higher the iron content of the deposit or the molten metal, the more detrimental the effect of the carbon content on the ductility and the good quality of the deposit.
In accordance with the present invention, this tendency is markedly reduced or even eliminated by using a flux coating containing 20 to 40 parts by weight of calcium carbonate, from 5 to. 35 parts of calcium fluoride, 10 to 35 parts of cryolite, 2 to 5 parts of bentonite from 3 to 12.5 parts of niobium in the form of ferro-niobium and a binder which can be dispersed in water, with or without up to 35 parts of titanium dioxide, up to 8.5 parts of manganese as ferro-manganese and up to 2 parts of titanium as ferro-titanium.
It can be seen that this coating is of the lime-fluorspar type. In said coating, the calcium carbonate serves to maintain the carbon at the low level which has been recognized to be important for obtaining crack-free and ductile deposits. Although the action is not clearly and completely established, it seems that complex reactions are taking place. In particular, when a sufficient quantity of calcium carbonate is present, as is the case in the coating defined above, the reactions

seem to be happening.
With the electrodes produced in accordance with the invention, the weld metal may contain only 0.05% carbon, even if there is in the binder a sufficient amount of carbon to theoretically give a carbon content of 0.2 % or more in the weld metal.
Niobium is present in the coating to reduce or suppress hot cracking of the weld metal. It also helps reduce carbon content by fixing some of the free carbon as niobium carbide. If desired, some or all of the niobium can be contained in the core instead of in the coating.
It is found that cryolite increases the good quality of the weld metal in that it reduces or removes porosity.
The titanium dioxide is preferably present in an amount of between 5 and 35 parts by weight, since it is found to improve the stability of the arc during welding, as well as the characteristics of the slag.
The preferred composition for the coating is as follows:

Water is needed to disperse the binder ingredients and also to provide a liquid by which the other ingredients can be put into paste form.
This paste is preferably applied to the wire forming the core of the alloy by extrusion and is dried on the surface of the wire by heating to 120 to 290 C., which produces, as has been observed, a hard coating. and adherent having good weld characteristics and which is not too sensitive to damage by normal handling
The invention is particularly applicable to cores containing 60 to 70% nickel and 20 to 30% copper and especially to those containing in addition a small amount of aluminum.
An example of such an electrode core wire is as follows
