<Desc/Clms Page number 2>
Une composition générale, destinée à être appliquée au bout à arc d'une électrode portant un enrobage de fondant, par exemple du type à poudre de fer, peut comprendre un mélange des matières suivantes ;

The present invention relates to welding electrodes coated with flux and to compositions intended to improve the welding properties of these electrodes.
It is desirable that the rods of the flux coated welding electrodes permit the immediate bursting of the arc when brought into contact with a workpiece.
If the tip of the electrode is bare, when the electrode touches the workpiece at the start of welding, there is a risk that the tip will stick, unless the electrode is immediately removed from the workpiece. works at the distance of establishment of the arc. On the other hand, when the electrode is completely covered with flux to its end, the electrical contact can only be established with the workpiece by strongly striking the workpiece with the tip of the electrode, to rupture the coating, which generally has little or no electrical conductivity, and this knock is likely to loosen pieces of the coating from the tip of the electrode, resulting in a faulty start of the weld.
With the advent of electrodes having a considerable content of iron powder in the flux coating and with the consequent tendency to employ flux coatings of increased thickness for a particular number of the core wire, the production of The arc may encounter even greater difficulties. Despite the fact that "iron powder" electrodes are often referred to as "contact type", very few of those are found on the market and perhaps none of them allow gushing. immediate arc when a new electrode is contacted with the workpiece.
One of the objects of the present invention is to provide a means of improving the arc production of welding electrodes coated with flux.
When welding is performed using flux coated electrodes of the types which deposit low hydrogen welding metal, slight porosity may occur in the weld metal at the start of any given weld, made at the start of any given weld. using a new electrode. This porosity may be due to the delay which occurs in the formation of a complete protective gas sheet when welding is started with such an electrode. This delay is due to the delay in gasification of the electrode coating and is aggravated by the unintentional elongation of the arc which occurs when the arc is fired in the normal manner, i.e. say by tapping the workpiece with the tip of the electrode, then removing the electrode and adjusting its position to the required length of the arc.
This involuntary lengthening of the arc is avoided by improving the way of producing the arc. If, at the same time, -when striking the workpiece of the electrode, a complete protective gas sheet can be produced, the porosity which occurs at the start of welding can be eliminated or reduced. .
Another object of the present invention is to provide a means for preventing or limiting the production of porosity at the start of welding carried out with a new electrode.
According to the present invention, an arc welding electrode, coated with flux, consisting of a core wire provided with a coating of flux which, inter alia, is arranged to give off protective gas in use, is characterized. ized in that, on the arc tip of the electrode, a composition different from the flux coating is applied and comprising a mixture of a powdered metal and a material with low or no electrical conductivity, suitable for to give off a protective gas when heated, this composition having an electrical reliability which facilitates the initiation of the arc without sticking and being arranged to give off a gaseous layer of gas which effectively protects the arc earlier than in absence of the composition, under the same conditions.
The powdered metal preferably constitutes the major part of the mixture, which provides good electrical conductivity at the arc end of an electrode on which the composition has been.

applied. The use of a pure metal alone, however, can cause the electrode to stick to the workpiece when attempting to elicit the arc, and the high electrical conductivity must therefore be reduced to prevent sticking. the electrode to the workpiece, but it must nevertheless allow the passage of a current sufficient to heat the composition and give rise to the initiation of the arc.
This reduction is preferably obtained by the addition of a minor proportion of pulverulent material of little or no electrical conductivity at room temperature and capable of giving off protective gas when heated. These materials can be suspended in an alkali metal silicate binder by a suspending agent.
The composition can be applied to the arc tip of a flux coated electrode by suitable means, such as painting or dipping.
The composition can be applied to any flux coated arc welding electrode, to provide easy arc initiation and effective gas shielding at the start of welding. It is effective, for example, for electrodes containing iron powder in a coating of low hydrogen flux, such as those disclosed in British Patent Application 36,156 / 56 for the invention to be carried out, is applied to the arc end of an electrode coated with flux, for example by painting or immersion, a composition falling between the limits mentioned below.
Before this composition is applied, the arched end of the centered wire extends to the surface of the flux coating at this end of the electrode. The composition is then applied substantially so as to come into contact with the arched end of the core wire and to form a coating conch of the order of 0.05 inch thick on the arched end of the core wire. 'electrode. This coating layer can extend a distance of from half an inch to two inches along the electrode.

With a sodium silicate binder, Paris chalk is a pure form of very finely ground chalk. Other amorphous forms of calcium carbonate may be suitable.

In this example, the utility of the iron powder is to impart good electrical conductivity to the arc end of the electrode to which the composition is to be applied. Paris chalk and cryolite are added to provide the required resistivity and to produce protective gases when these materials are heated. White titanium oxide is useful as an agent of

spreading, while sodium alginate is employed as a suspending agent in sodium silicate which acts as a binder.
In some cases, it may be desired that all or part of the metal powder be in the form of a metal having deoxidizing properties when depositing a ferrous weld metal, for example ferroaluminum. minium, ferro-silicon or other ferro-alloys. It should be observed that the electrical conductivity of the composition must be kept at a suitable level and that, for example, ferro-silicon cannot therefore be used alone. Other metals which can be used in compositions according to the present invention are bismuth, cobalt, nickel, silver, tin and cadmium.
When the electrodes are to be used with alternating current, it may be desirable to incorporate arc stabilizing and / or arc activating compounds into the composition. Potassium silicate and potassium oxalate may be suitable where the flux coating is. of the low hydrogen content type, while potassium carbonate and alkali rare earth metals may find application in general cases.
In the case where the composition is applied to the arc tip of a low hydrogen type flux coated electrode having a minimum of compounds containing water and hydrogen combined in the coating of the flux. fondant, it should be observed that the composition should also contain a minimum of compounds containing water and hydrogen combined. The electrode must then be heated to expel any water, optionally present, from the flux coating and from the composition.
