PROCEDE DEXECUTION DE SOUPAPES D ECHAPPEMENT POUR MOTEURS A COMBUSTION
INTERNE
<Desc/Clms Page number 2>

EXECUTION PROCESS OF EXHAUST VALVES FOR COMBUSTION ENGINES
INTERNAL
The invention relates to a method of making exhaust valves for internal combustion engines, as well as to established valve cones and. after this process.
It is known that the valves of internal combustion engines, in particular the exhaust valves, are subjected to excessive stresses and are strongly attacked by high temperatures and corrosion. To protect the valves against these attacks, the surfaces are applied. for sealing them by welding, a material which, thanks to its composition, offers particular resistance to heat and corrosion. These shielding materials are known under the name of "stellite".
The known shielding materials were brought by hand by welding onto the blank of the valve cone which was most often established by upsetting and forging and provided with a suitable recess for receiving the shielding material. The manufacture of such shielded cones was particularly difficult and expensive for the reason that the shielding material supplied could only be worked with great difficulty by turning or molding.
However, as the filler metal could only be applied in the form of the weld bead known per se and therefore had the appearance of a bead, it was most often necessary to remove more than one. - tied by an operation with chip removal, which not only involved a high level of labor, but also a significant loss of shielding materials.
The method of making valves according to the invention is characterized in that the shielding is provided by means of filler metal welding on the previously shaped cone, after which the entire cone is subjected to an operation. during forging during which the valve, heated to a temperature suitable for forging is stamped, while its surface undergoes a forging, this operation being followed by the known machining of the surface.
<Desc / Clms Page number 2>
Therefore, and according to the invention, the non-malleable and extremely difficult to machine stellite is replaced by a malleable shielding material. By means of the die-forging, thus made possible, of the cone and of the shielding coating, the required surface machining is reduced to a minimum, which has the effect not only of reducing labor, but also of considerable savings. measures shielding material. Forging furthermore achieves additional compression and therefore reinforcement of the shielding coating which contributes to increasing the longevity of the valve.
Another characteristic of the invention consists in that the temperature conducive to forging to which the coating called to be stamped is brought, in terms of shielding, prior to its shaping by forging or by suitable stamping, reaches a value located immediately above. below the melting point of this shielding material. When a material thus heated is subjected to forging it liquefies under the pressure applied during the forging process.
This liquefaction makes it possible to imprint on the surface of the shielding material its final shape with great precision so that it suffices to subject it to very reduced machining. In addition, this material is strongly compressed and its structure is improved. When the shielding material is supplied by autogenous welding, pores inevitably result, which however disappear thanks to the process according to the invention. This also applies to porous places which may arise when the shielding material is supplied by brazing or welding in the form of wires or rings.
Non-malleable stellites can also be treated by the process according to the invention.
The method according to the invention makes it possible to establish a valve which, according to the invention, is shielded not only on its surface corresponding to the seat, which is already known per se, but also on its outer peripheral surface, ie. that is to say on the largest diameter of the valve, so that the latter is provided with effective protection in the places most exposed to the influences of temperature and corrosion.
The valves constructed according to the invention have a hardness and mechanical strength not achievable by other means and which can only be achieved by packing under high pressure, with appropriate heating.
