<Desc/Clms Page number 3>

PLATE FOR COATING AND SIMILAR PANEL PRESSES.,
The present invention relates to a platen for presses for coating panels and the like having a channel system for the circulation of a heating medium, such as hot water or steam.
The known press plates of the aforementioned type are arranged so that a number of transverse channels are connected to each other by other channels oriented longitudinally in the plates. The channels thus formed are blocked at the points necessary for obtaining the desired system. It has been found that the outer obstruction of the channels is extremely difficult to achieve. Leaks of heating fluid are frequently very troublesome and require repeated repairs at relatively short intervals. This tendency to leak is more particularly present when the material to be compressed lets escape liquids which cool the edges of the press plates.
As a result, the press platens having a channel system require only a very small number of caps.
The present invention makes it possible to obtain trays thus formed. It is characterized by the fact that the press plate comprises two or more sections connected in a sealed manner between them, in which the plate in which the intermediate sections (in the case where they are provided) have s' channels. extending from one end of the section to the other in one direction of the tray, and communicate with parallel channels made in the sections at the ends and entering through the side edges facing each other from the sections at the ends, these parallel channels extending in these sections only as far as the intersection with one or more transverse channels entering through one and (or) the other lateral side of the sections at the ends,
and also extending only to the intersection with one or more of the first mentioned channels.

Fig. 1 of the accompanying drawing is a view in longitudinal section of an end section of a press plate of known construction, while FIG. 2 is a similar partial view of the same plate on a larger scale.
Fig. 3 is a longitudinal sectional view of a press plate according to the invention, while FIG. 4 is a similar partial view on a larger scale of the same plate.
Figs. 1 and 2 show that it is necessary to use a large number of plugs for the obstruction of the ends of the channels and for the separation of the different parts? of the channel system in the trays in which the system is composed of channels extending from one end to the other. However, these plugs are largely omitted in the arrangement according to the invention, an embodiment of which is shown in FIGS. 3 and 4.
In this case, the press plate has three sections 1, 2 and 3 formed by thick iron plates. These sections are connected to each other, in this case by welding, after drilling the channels of the system for the circulation of the heating fluid. Of course, the press plate can have a higher number of sections. In this case, several intermediate sections corresponding to section 2 are interposed between sections- 1 and 3.To obtain the desired channel system in the press plate 1, 2 and 3, a a number of longitudinal 5 and transverse channels 4. The transverse channels 4 enter from a lateral side of the sections 1 and 3, while the longitudinal channels enter from the side which is to be connected to the following section.
During the drilling of the channels, however, care must be taken that these channels penetrate only to a depth such that the number of channels required for the desired circulation of the fluid results without the need for subsequently block unnecessary communication openings with plugs. If it is desired to obtain a system for a serpentine circulation of the heating fluid, for example a system as shown in figs. 3 and 4 of the drawing, one cannot avoid the need for the obstruction, by plugs 6, of some communication openings resulting from the intersection of longitudinal and transverse channels, of some ends of the transverse channels by caps 7.
A comparison between the known arrangement shown in Figs. 1 and 2, and the arrangement according to the invention shown in FIGS. 3 and 4 reveal the very important simplification achieved by the reduction of the necessary number of internal and external plugs. As indicated previously, the reduction of the number of external plugs is particularly important for operation and maintenance press platforms.
Another advantage resulting from the invention is that the channels for the circulation of the heating fluid can be drilled in the longitudinal direction of the press plate, which has often not been possible so far because the great length of the trays.
The advantages of the orientation of the channels in the longitudinal direction of the plates consist in a significant reduction in the resistance to the circulation of the heating fluid as a result of the reduction in the number of bends, and in the possibility of adjusting the heat applied to the plates. outer and inner parts of the press plate, by different channel spacing.
After drilling the channels, the different sections 1, 2 and 3 are connected along lines 8, using one or more centering studs 9, intended to ensure the correct alignment of the corresponding channels.
Of course, the invention is not limited to the embodiment shown in FIGS. 3 and 4, and we can imagine variations and modifications without departing from the principle. For example, the transverse channels 4 can be made to enter alternately from the two opposite sides of sections 1 and 3, or the channel system can be arranged as desired by
<Desc / Clms Page number 3>
modifying the number of channels and (or) plugs. If necessary, transverse channels are provided in the intermediate section 2, acting as inlet or outlet channels.
Instead of composing the press plate (the length and width of which can of course vary within extended limits) of cross-sections with respect to the longitudinal direction, it can, if necessary, be composed of sections parallel to the longitudinal direction. In this case, the channels 5 shown in figs. 3 and 4 are perpendicular to the longitudinal direction, while the channels 4 are parallel to this direction of the assembled press plate.
One such embodiment is obtained without any modification to the arrangement shown in Figs. 3 and 4, if x is chosen shorter than Y. -
The plate can also be given a length equal to the width, that is to say a square shape.
