WERKWIJZE TER VEREDELING VAN ONVERZADIGDE VETZUREN OF DERIVATEN DAARVAN OF VAN STOFFEN, DIE ONVERZADIGDE VETZUREN EN/OF HUN DERIVATEN BEVATTEN.
(Uitvinder J.J.A. Blekkingh).

PROCESS FOR THE PROCESSING OF UNSATURATED FATTY ACIDS OR THEIR DERIVATIVES OR OF SUBSTANCES CONTAINING UNSATURATED FATTY ACIDS AND / OR THEIR DERIVATIVES.
(Inventor J.J.A. Blekkingh).
It is known to upgrade oils containing unsaturated fatty acid residues by heating them with a few percent of sulfur-containing nickel or cobalt catalysts, which have been prepared with the aid of silica-containing substances. Temperatures above 170 ° C were used.
During this treatment, double bonds move, which often leads to the formation of conjugated double bonds, as evidenced inter alia by the increased refractive index and specific refraction, as well as the altered absorption for ultraviolet light. Simultaneously with the displacement of the double bonds, egg trans- type stereoisomers are formed. which is evident from the change in the melting point.
However, the oils acquire various less desirable properties with this refinement; among other things, they take on a dark color and the films obtained from such oils are somewhat adherent.
It has now been found that unsaturated fatty acids or derivatives thereof or substances containing unsaturated acids and / or their derivatives can be advantageously upgraded with the aid of the above-mentioned catalysts by carrying out the heating at temperatures below 140 ° C. temperatures of 100 to 120 C.
The treatment at these lower temperatures prevents the starting products from taking on a dark color and films obtained from oils thus treated from sticking to some extent. In addition, the percentage of conjugated double bonds can be increased considerably higher than with the known heating at higher temperatures.
Treatment is of special significance to practice
<Desc / Clms Page number 2>
according to the invention of fatty oils They can be used both in the raw state
EMI2.1
or after one ear, for example after deacidification and / or bleaching. Examples of such oils are drying or semi-drying oils, further also non-drying oils containing oleic acid or other monounsaturated fatty acid residues.
Examples of other material to which the invention can be applied are unsaturated fatty acids such as oleic acid linseed oil fatty acids; examples of derivatives of saturated fatty acids, other than the fatty oils, are their other esters, e.g. alkyl esters, such as the aethyl ester. Also mixtures of the said substances. as well as substances containing the above-mentioned unsaturated compounds are suitable for the treatment according to the invention.
The treatment has the advantage for the oils which qualify for use in the paint industry. that they retain their light color and that they acquire a high content of conjugated bonds, allowing them to polymerize quickly and dry quickly to give water-resistant films which do not stick. The specific weight, the viscosity and the free fatty acid content do not change practically by the refinement.
In general, in the practice of the invention, on compounds of the type indicated, displacement of the double bonds occurs and concomitant rearrangement of the cis to trans form. In unsaturated fatty acids or derivatives thereof having more than a double bond, the main consequence of the shift is that conjugation of the double bonds occurs. In the upgrading of unsaturated fatty acids or derivatives thereof with a single double bond, e.g., oleic acid or esters thereof, the rearrangement of the cis to trans form is the most important, whereby the. melting point rises; this is important for the preparation of margarine and other edible fats.
As already mentioned, nickel or cobalt catalysts known per se, which contain some
EMI2.2
percentages of sulfur and which have been prepared in a known manner with the aid of silicon dioxide. These nickel or cobalt catalysts are generally prepared by dissolving a salt of the metal involved, such as e.g. the sulfate, in the presence of a silica gel.
EMI2.3
By beating a silicon-containing substance, such as silica gel or water glass, under heating with an alkali, such as, for example, soda, or sodium hydroxide, and separating the precipitate by filtration and washing, or by precipitation of a compound of the metal concerned, like eg.
boiling the hydroxide, together with a silicon-containing substance, such as, for example, kieselguhr or water glass, in an alkaline aqueous solution and separating the precipitate by filtration and washing. Then the separated precipitate is reduced in a stream of hydrogen at a temperature,
EMI2.4
forming nickel or cobalt metal!) e.g. 500Co
The sulfur content can be imparted to the catalyst in various ways at any stage of its preparation or afterwards.
treating the precipitate formed by the alkali with a solution of a sulfur-containing nickel or cobalt compound, such as e.g. nickel
EMI2.5
sulfate, or by mixing the filtered off dried precipitate with a sulfur compound or with sulfur, before the reduction takes place, or by treating a reduced catalyst with hydrogen sulfide, or by using the reduced catalyst in the hydrogenation of a sulfur-containing oil. Most suitable are sulfur percentages of 1 109 calculated on the metal. Preferably a nickel catalyst is used, prepared as above and containing about 4% sulfur based on nickel.
The catalysts may contain other customary ingredients such as carriers.
In order to speed up the upgrading it is desirable to have a fairly large amount of catalyst, e.g. 5-10%, calculated as metal
EMI2.6
on oil, to tease. One obtains in this way at j, v.
<Desc / Clms Page number 3>
for eligible oils surprisingly higher conjugation than would be possible with the same amount of catalyst at the known higher temperatures (e.g. 180 G).
This is presumably a consequence of the occurrence of side reactions at those higher temperatures which reduce the content of the fibrous acid residues with conjugated double bonds. O
When applying the invention to material. the double bonds of which it is desired to conjugate, the treatment is preferably continued until the material has almost reached maximum conjugation.
This can be observed from the refractive index of the material. It increases until the conjugation has reached a maximum
The duration of the treatment according to the invention is about
EMI3.1
different factors depending. e.g. 0, of the tpratuar used, the nature of the catalyst. the desired isomerization o 'Fits in practice
EMI3.2
For example, a treatment of 2 - 8 hours is allowed. although often a shorter or longer duration can have a significant effect. The best thing is the duration of the treatment in advance. in connection with the desired effect!) for each case to be determined experimentally.
EMI3.3
It is desirable to avoid the presence of oxygen as much as possible, both in the feedstock and in the catalyst; Preferably, therefore, e.g. oil is freed of oxygen and peroxides and the isomerization is carried out in vaeuo or in an inert atmosphere, e.g. in a carbon dioxide atmosphere.

This cake was reduced in hydrogen at 500 DEG C., after which the catalyst was ready. Of the catalyst thus prepared, so much deacidified and bleached linseed oil was added that 10 wt. % nickel based on oil were present.
Aliquots of this mixture were mixed in one with stirring

From these Examples I to III it is clear that the best results are obtained at about 100 ° C. The specific weight, the viscosity and the free fatty acid content at this temperature practically do not change during the isomerization, which is clearly the case at 180 °.

Linseed oil fatty acids were treated as in Example 1 at 100 DEG C. for 1 hour.
The increase in refraction was 0.0120 while the color due to dissolved nickel was green. This green color could be removed by treatment with sulfuric acid. Linseed oil throughout
Treated at 100 ° C for 1 hour also showed a refraction increase of 0.0120.
