<Desc/Clms Page number 2>
<Desc/Clms Page number 3>

<Desc/Clms Page number 5>

NODULAR GRAPHITE CAST IRON AND ITS MANUFACTURING PROCESS.
The present invention relates to a cast iron in which the graphite is in the form of nodules or nodular clusters, and to its method of manufacture.
During the graphitization of the cast iron, the lamellae formed, especially if they are of relatively large dimensions, reduce the strength of this cast iron and its tenacity. On the contrary, the formation of graphite in nodules makes it possible to remedy these drawbacks. and consequently to obtain a cast iron with particularly advantageous mechanical properties, and one of the aims of the invention is to make it possible to obtain a process for treating the cast iron which promotes the formation of nodular graphite.
The research carried out to date has not made it possible to obtain uniform and satisfactory results by operations applicable on an industrial scale. Most of this research has been directed towards the presence in the cast iron of at least one agent acting as a stabilizer of the carbides and promoting the nucleation or nodularization of graphite from the liquid. However, tests have shown that the precipitation of graphite in smooth nodules takes place during the heat treatment of white iron to make it malleable when sulfur is present in the form of iron sulphide, the remainder being in the form of iron sulphide. manganese.
We thus came to the conclusion that the formation of nodules had to be caused by a physical phenomenon residing in a nucleation from a germ determining the crystallization of the graphite and the reunion of the crystals in spherolites.
Since the crystallization of the graphite takes place in the hexagonal system, the nucleation seeds must have an affinity for this crystallization system allowing the fixing of the graphite.
In order to prevent as much as possible the formation of graphite in long lamellae, it appears advantageous to delay the crystallization of the nucleation seeds until the moment when this
<Desc / Clms Page number 2>
cast has reached a pasty consistency, due in particular to the precipitation of austenite, and consequently to use as nucleation seeds one or more elements which are antigraphitizing at high temperature, and whose nucleation action occurs on the contrary during a lowering of the temperature, when the dissolved element (s) crystallize to form seeds which promote the fixing of the graphite.
The invention is therefore embodied in a process for obtaining a high-strength cast iron with reduced "notch effect" in which the graphite is in the form of nodules or nodular clusters, characterized in that that at least one addition element capable of acting at high temperature as an antigraphitiser and at lower temperature as a graphitizing agent, that is to say as germs or crystallization centers around which the hexagonal graphite crystals from the decomposition of iron carbide gather, this addition element deriving from the family of metalloids comprising sulfur, selenium and tellurium, said element being incorporated into the fluid cast iron either in the pure state or in the state of a natural or synthetic compound,
or again in the form of at least one body or compound capable of giving rise to said element by combination or decomposition within the mass of fluid cast iron.
Particularly satisfactory results can be obtained with sulfur and iron sulphide In fact, crystals of iron sulphide or the eutectic SFe- + Fe only form below 1200 C, that is to say when the fluid cast iron has already acquired the pasty consistency, preventing the formation of graphite in long strips. The iron sulphide then crystallizes in the hexagonal system, and forms nucleation seeds around which the graphite comes together in nodules, the phenomenon considered being thus of a physical nature. In the case of eutectic melt or close to the eutectic point, the melt freezes at around 1140 The iron sulphide not being soluble in solid iron is expelled and forms the solid seeds.
The iron sulphide forming the addition element can be present in a synthetic or natural form, for example in the form of pyrite.
In the latter case, the pyrites used also contain selenium and tellurium in the form of impurities. Research has shown that particularly satisfactory results can be obtained with pyrites precisely thanks to the presence of selenium and tellurium, the tellurium having in particular the effect of allowing a cleaner quenching of the metal to be obtained.
According to particular features of the invention, the addition element can be incorporated both in a hypoeutectic base iron and in a hypereutectic iron, with satisfactory results. This incorporation can be done either in the melting apparatus itself, or at the outlet of this apparatus, by introduction into the fluid cast iron being poured into the ladle or a similar container, in one or more batches in order that the concentration of addition element does not exceed a certain value and in the metal already poured into the ladle during filling, or by depositing said element, in particular in the case of iron sulphide, inside the ladle in one or more batches before the fluid cast iron is poured into it.
In the latter case, the mixing then takes place on its own, and this is facilitated by using the iron sulphide in the form of grains preferably having a size of 1 to 5 mm. -
According to other features of the invention, this incorporation of the addition element can take place by inoculation, that is to say by gradual incorporation into the mass of cast iron, in the form of. a continuous current or not in the vortex with a substantially horizontal axis which occurs around the jet of liquid iron when it reaches the sheet of molten iron already in the ladle. This m-
<Desc / Clms Page number 3>
This method can be used in particular for the addition of iron sulphide in large capacity ladles.
The iron sulphide then penetrates intimately into this molten cast iron to form as many nucleation germs
To obtain a satisfactory nodular cast iron, the metal must not contain too high a percentage of hydrogen or dissolved oxygen. Is therefore advantageously added at the same time as the addi- tion element formed by sulfur, selenium, tellurium or a compound or derivative of these bodies, a substance acting as a purifier or as a deoxidizer to clean the cast iron, and more capable of neutralizing 1: possible excessively funny addition in the melt.
This scrubber is preferably constituted by a body which reacts favorably with the addition element, and is for example ferro-manganese and ferro-boron introduced by inoculation, magnesium, aluminum, barium, calcium, strontium, glucinium or their compounds deposited on the surface of the metal since they react. more actively with the considered element
Glucinium (beryllium) constitutes in particular a particularly advantageous purifier, because it is very greedy for oxygen, its refractory oxide being moreover very light and rising to the surface of the bath, forming a film which isolates the molten metal from the water. 'air.
Since glucinium crystallizes in the hexagonal system, it is also capable of creating the nucleation of graphite and, therefore, can be added to the cast iron thanks to this property parallel to that of the nucleating agents already mentioned. Given its very low density, it is advantageously inoculated within the liquid metal in the form of a nickel-glucinium, copper-glucinium or iron-glucinium alloy for example, preferably having a glucinium content of between 5 and 10%.
Another characteristic of the invention lies in the addition to the fluid melt of a determined quantity of antimony, so as to obtain by combination with the sulfur still contained in the melt in the impurity state of the sulphide. antimony acting as an addition element
The proportion of addition element can vary between relatively wide limits if a co-ordinating scrubber is added together, this proportion possibly ranging, for example, from 0.01 to 5% of the weight of the iron, although the best results are generally obtained with a proportion ranging from 0.01 to 0.3% of the weight of the cast iron.
According to still other features of the invention, ferro-silicon is added to the cast iron, in addition to the element or elements mentioned above. Particularly interesting results can be obtained, for example, by addition to the ladle, by inoculation of iron sulphide, accompanied by ferro-maganese and ferro-silicon, the cast iron forming the base metal having a silicon content. such that the structure of the castings in question is white without treatment.
The effect of this triple addition is to provide moldings of favorable thickness with a gray structure after cooling and to impart to them advantageous mechanical properties. Satisfactory results can be obtained, for example, by inoculating ferro-silicon in the form of grains having from 1 to 3 mm. in size and containing about 75% silicon.
The invention also relates to common or alloy cast irons in which one or more of the elements considered above have been incorporated in the fluid state, and the texture of which coats the graphite in the form of spheroidal nodules or nodular clusters. , as well as the cast iron parts obtained by molding with incorporation of one or more of the elements considered above.

The appended drawings, given by way of characteristic examples, show the difference in structure existing between ordinary cast irons and those obtained by application of the process, object of the invention.
Fig. 1 is a very magnified micrographic representation showing the distribution network of graphite in an ordinary pearlitic cast iron produced in a usual cupola and without application of the present procedure,
Fig. 2 is a similar representation of a cast iron produced with a cupola and containing small quantities of nickel, chromium and molybdenum, this representation showing the poor distribution of the graphite in flakes, which exposes this cast iron to a notch effect accentuated.
Fig. 3 is a similar representation made at the same magnification of a cast iron produced by the present process, the graphite being distributed in the form of nodules or nodular clusters.
Figure 4 is a representation similar to Figure 3 showing a cast iron also produced by the present process in which the graphite is also found in the form of nodules or nodular clusters. It represents the metal of Fig. 1 treated by the process, object of the invention, and coming from the same casting on identical specimens.
Examination of these figs. will make it possible to easily detect the improvements obtained in the mechanical properties of these cast irons by applying the process which is the subject of the invention. This also makes it possible to obtain parts liable to undergo hot and cold deformation, to improve by heat treatment which does not make the part ferritic, to become malleable by extremely rapid annealing, providing structural parts. - fully ferritic or partially ferritic and partially pearlitic ture, which modifies the qualities of resistance to elongation and to deformation of the part, and having high mechanical characteristics which are constant over time.
Provided that the usual rules for molding high strength cast irons are followed, application of this process further results in a metal which is easy to cast, even at low carbon content.
It is thus possible to subject a piece of cast iron to a stabilization treatment by heating it to a temperature of 425 to 450 C. for a period of time ranging from 3 to 5 hours depending on its thickness, then allowing it to cool slowly enough to that the hourly drop in temperature represents approximately 30 to 50 C.
A more rapid heat treatment allowing satisfactory results to be obtained according to the envisaged application is obtained by standardization by heating the part to a temperature of 900 ° C. and maintaining this temperature for one hour, then allowing this part to cool. looking calm.
The mechanical strength of the castings obtained by the process according to the invention can also be improved by subjecting them to quenching and tempering, by heating these parts to a temperature of 850 ° C., then by quenching them in oil. or with blown air, and applying a subsequent heat treatment consisting of tempering at 425 or 450 C to finally allow these parts to cool slowly with an hourly temperature drop ranging from 30 to 50 C.
For the implementation of these different heat treatments, other than the standardization treatment and capable of improving the mechanical characteristics of the parts obtained, these parts are superimposed and they are heated to a temperature not exceeding 730 to 780 C, that is to say lower than the softening temperature. In the course of this operation, the plugging of iron ore or the like used to support the parts and used according to the previous methods can be removed.
<Desc / Clms Page number 5>
This annealing of the parts, which is usually of short duration and preferably between 30 minutes and 4 hours depending on the destination of the parts, can be carried out for example in a salt bath furnace of ordinary type.
For a part with a circular section of 30 m / m in diameter, it is thus possible to obtain an entirely ferritic structure by annealing for 40 minutes at 750 C.
The various heat treatments stated above can be applied without distinction to all common or alloy castings of austenitic, bainitic, sorbitic, martensitic, pearlitic or other structures.
A part containing nodular graphite obtained by the process, object of the invention, is deformable in the as-cast state, it is easy to machine and gives rolled shavings, it is capable of taking a good polish. , it has a satisfactory coefficient of friction, ensures a good seal, resists heat and thermal shock well, is capable of fixing electrolytic coatings, retains ceramics and enamels well, and is able to hold hot-dip metal coatings.
It goes without saying that modifications of detail can be made to the various embodiments described without departing from the scope of the invention.
