SYSTEME SUPPRIMANT L'ADHERENCE DES GOUTTES, BUEE, GIVRE, NEIGE, etc.....
SUR LES SURFACES LISSES EN GENERAL ET PARE-BRISE EN
PARTICULIER.
<Desc/Clms Page number 2>
<Desc/Clms Page number 3>

SYSTEM REMOVING THE ADHESION OF DROPS, FOG, FROST, SNOW, etc .....
ON SMOOTH SURFACES IN GENERAL AND WINDSHIELDS
PARTICULAR.
The present invention relates to improvements relating to the system which is the subject of Belgian patent 491 499 of October 5, 1949 and consisting of a wiper, in particular for a windshield, comprising a brush, preferably with soft bristles, mounted on a support to which movement can be imparted, in order to spread the rain over the surface exposed to it. This system creates a film of moving water. However, it has been found that, in the application of the system to the windshields of vehicles, in particular motor cars, the sheet of water can hamper visibility when the speed of the vehicle becomes high enough.
Indeed, this sheet is then disturbed by the displacement of air resulting from the high speed and it starts to vibrate and to wrinkle, which distorts the landscape and consequently hinders visibility.
In addition, during very, violent showers, the influx of rainwater makes the water table too high at certain times and this causes a distortion of the landscape at a slower rate than that which has just been envisaged.
The object of the present invention is to remedy these drawbacks.
To this end, in the windscreen wiper according to the invention, the bristles of the brush are mounted side by side in a frame and are very close to each other, so as not to leave an interval between them. Thus :, the brush, without completely removing the excess water, makes it possible to unify the water sheet, when this brush is moved, when this sheet begins to deform under the action of air displacement caused by speed.
According to another improvement, near the bristles of the brush is provided at least one sheet of flexible and imporable material placed substantially normally in the direction of movement. In this way, the resistance of the brush is increased and, moreover, the water that is pushing back cannot pass through
<Desc / Clms Page number 2>
brush, which would produce excess water on the surface exposed to rain.
The sheet can be made of plastic, rubber, gutta-percha, etc.
Another object of the invention is to provide a device for controlling the windshield wiper, which allows the latter to be given adequate movement to maintain a stable liquid layer.
To this end, according to the present invention, the support on which the brush is mounted is controlled by a motor system producing automatic stops of the movement at regular intervals and determined according to the speed of movement of the vehicle. It communicates to the support, at a rate of 10 at most per minute, a succession of beats each formed by a movement, either a go or a return, carried out at high speed and followed by a stopping time. The movements of the brush are intended to unify the film of water left by this brush at the precise moment when it begins to deform. The movements being very fast are barely perceptible and are followed by an adjustable stopping time, which depends on the speed of the vehicle, the speed of the wind and the amount of water inflow.
Other details and features of the invention will emerge from the description of a windscreen wiper system, given below by way of non-limiting example and with reference to the accompanying drawings.
Figure 1 is a perspective view of a brush according to the invention.
Figure 2 is an end view of a variant of the brush of Figure 1.
In both figures, the same reference notations designate similar elements.
The brush shown in FIG. 1 is formed of a core 1 of hard material, around which is placed a sheet 2 of flexible and impermeable material, such as certain plastics, rubber, gutta-percha, etc. Soft bristles 3 are placed on the sheet 2 and folded over on either side of the core. They have different lengths so that their ends form bevels 5 and 6. They are not placed in tufts but side by side, so as to form a uniform and tight row, no appreciable gap remaining between them. fur.
A metal frame 4 maintains the various elements in their respective position. The free ends 7 and 8 of the sheet do not protrude beyond the end of the hairs which are near them.
In Figure 2, the bristles are placed directly around the core 1, the sheet 2 surrounding the bristles and located on the outside.
In both cases, the brush is mounted in a support, so that by imparting a back and forth movement to the latter, the water which flows over the surface exposed to rain is not dried, but on the contrary, it is extended so as to form a film. In addition, when the rain is heavy, the brush removes excess water. The fact that the bristles are very tight and that an impermeable sheet is provided makes it possible to prevent the water repelled by the brush from passing through it. It is thus possible to maintain a uniform film of water provided that a suitable movement is imparted to the support of the brush, when, depending on the speed of the vehicle and the violence of the wind or the rain, the water table tends to warp.
@
It is, in fact, superfluous to constantly move the support as in the known windshield wipers, which do not stop and generally perform one round trip per minute approximately. It suffices, at the moment when the rain begins, to impress a few successive movements on the support to form the film of water. But then it's good that the support moves
<Desc / Clms Page number 3>
from time to time to unify the water film or reduce its importance at the time when, due to the increased speed of the vehicle or to the increase in the force of the wind or the rain, this film tends to be deform.
It has been observed that at 40 km per hour, once the water film has been established, it is maintained without it being necessary to move the brush to, again as long as the vehicle is traveling in built-up areas. and that the wind is not particularly violent. At sixty km per hour, the water table begins to be disturbed around the twelfth second, which corresponds approximately to the twelfth double beat of a windscreen wiper of the known type.
When the speed increases further, for example 80 km per hour and up to 120 km per hour, the water table is already wrinkling at the seventh second.
It cannot be envisaged having to put the current wiper back into service too often, which would require continual maneuvers, and therefore inconvenient for the driver. This is why, according to the invention, a motor system is provided which prints on the support of the brush a succession of rapid movements, each followed by a stopping timea For example, a single stroke can be provided every 12 seconds or every 6 seconds. Therefore, the brush makes a quick pass over the windshield in the twelfth or sixth second and stays in place at one end of its stroke for 5 or 11 seconds, during these stops the driver is not hampered neither by the sheet of water, nor by the passage of the brush.
Indeed, these passages are reduced to about 10 per minute, while it is necessary to provide 60 to 80 beats per minute for the blades used in the wipers known until now, which can never be stopped under penalty of seeing reappear the drops immediately after stopping.
The motor system can be any and use any suitable mechanical arrangements. The drive motor can have several speeds, the change from one to the other being placed under the control of the operator.
The first speed may be the speed used hitherto which corresponds to approximately one double brush stroke per minute. It will be used for a few seconds at the start of the rain fall, to clean the windshield with the falling rain and the soft brush of the wiper and then to form a film of water.
The second speed will correspond for example to a single beat every 12 seconds, the third to such a beat every 6 seconds.
The first speed can moreover be eliminated and possibly replaced by the control of a movement with stopping time, similar to those corresponding to the other two speeds. Several speeds can be provided, the duration of the stopping times being chosen according to the speeds of the vehicle and the importance of the wind and the rain.
It should be understood that the invention is in no way limited to the embodiments described above and that many modifications can be made thereto, without departing from the scope of the present patent application.
Thus, in particular, the speeds indicated above are only indicative.
