<Desc/Clms Page number 2>

MACHINE FOR HOT WELDING SHEETS OF THERMOPLASTIC MATERIAL.
The present invention relates to a simple and inexpensive machine making it possible to heat-weld sheets of thermoplastic material such as polyethylene to one another, without experiencing the drawbacks resulting from the adhesion of the thermoplastic material to the heated metal parts. used to bring it to soldering temperature.
According to the invention, this machine comprises two endless metal bands guided and driven so that two adjacent strands of these endless bands move in parallel at the same speed, and heating and cooling devices by which these two strands endless movable metal ribbons are heated on one part of their path and then cooled on a following part of their path.
The sheets or layers of thermoplastic material to be welded together are introduced between the heated strands of the metal ribbons, in contact with which the thermoplastic material is brought to the welding temperature and they are carried by the ribbons into the cooling zone where the The welded thermoplastic material returns to its normal consistency and ceases to adhere to the cooled tapes before being released from them. The invention finds in particular an advantageous application to the hermetic sealing by welding of packaging made of polyethylene and similar thermoplastic materials, such as sachets for packaging food products.
In order for the invention to be fully understood, an embodiment thereof shown schematically, by way of example, in the accompanying drawing, in which:
Fig. 1 is a general view of the welding machine, in perspective, and
Fig. 2 a detailed view of the metal tapes, in cross section.
In this example, the two endless metal bands 1 and 2 are superimposed and pass over rollers 3, 3 'and 4, 4' with horizontal axes, carried by spaced uprights 5, 6 on the base 7.
<Desc / Clms Page number 2>
The rollers 3, 4 are motors and heated, being for this purpose rotated by an appropriate mechanism contained in a housing 8 and provided with heating by electrical resistances or the like, while the rollers 3 ', 4' can be of simple return rollers, crazy on their axes. Turning in opposite directions, the rollers 3, 4 drive the ribbons 1, 2 in the direction of the arrows, so that the adjacent and parallel strands 1 ', 2' of the ribbons move in the same direction, from left to right on the Fig. 1, and at the same speed. These strands 1 ', 2' pass between two cooling ramps 9, 10 which blow cold air or another refrigerant fluid over them, so that the metal of the bands, heated by passing over the heating rollers 3, 4 is gradually cooled before reaching the pulleys 3 ', 4'.
It is therefore understood that if one introduces at point a, between the moving strands 1 ', 2', the thicknesses of thermoplastic material to be welded, for example the lips of a packaging bag, the heat of the rollers 3, 4 transmitted by the metal of the ribbons, brings the thermoplastic material to the welding temperature. At this temperature, the thermoplastic material adheres to the metal of the ribbons, but no inconvenience can result since it is entrained by the latter and remains in contact with the metal during the entire path between the rollers 3, 4 and the rollers 3 ', 4'. The cooling of the metal by the refrigerant of the ramps 9, 10 causes that. plastic material which comes off the strands 1 ', 2', resuming its solid state and leaves the machine at b, perfectly welded.
It will be noted that thanks to the use of successively heated and cooled metal ribbons, with which the thermoplastic material remains in contact throughout the welding process, the welding temperature is no longer critical to within a few degrees. , the welding being done as soon as the melting point of the material is reached or exceeded while the material ceases to adhere to the ribbons as soon as they are sufficiently cooled.
As shown in the drawing, and particularly in FIG. 2, the width of the tapes 1, 2 is preferably several millimeters greater than that of the rim of the heating rollers 3, 4 and the edge 1x, 2X of the tapes facing the thermoplastic material 11, the part of which is solder 11 'is engaged between the strands 1', 2 ', is cantilevered on these rollers 3, 4.
This cantilever edge is heated less strongly by the rollers 3, 4 than the part of the ribbons which is in direct contact with these rollers and, therefore, the thermoplastic material clamped between the cantilever edges is brought to a lower temperature than the part of this material to be welded and remains solid, giving the tapes a good grip to transport the thermoplastic material object through the machine, without a tear at the weld being to fear.
Of course, the invention is not limited to the form of execution and to the details of embodiment which have been described and shown by way of example, and it would not be outside its scope by making changes. modifications.
CLAIMS.
1.- Machine for hot welding sheets of thermoplastic material, in particular of polyethylene, characterized in that it comprises two endless metal bands, or the equivalent, which are guided and driven so that two adjacent strands of these ribbons move parallel at the same speed, and heating and cooling devices by which these two adjacent strands are heated over part of their path and cooled over a subsequent part of their path, the sheets or thicknesses of thermoplastic material to be welded being clamped between said strands of the ribbons and entrained by them along this path.
